Announcement: During the Wellbeing Week we are paying attention to brain health

The Wellbeing Week of the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and Student Union ISYY will be celebrated again on both campuses Joensuu and Kuopio on October 3rd-7th 2022. The theme week has been organized for the ninth time, which the last two being organized as part of the BRIDGES project of UEF and ISYY. The project's activities promote students' wellbeing and community spirit until the end of 2023.

The purpose of Wellbeing Week is to offer UEF's students and staff a program that promotes wellbeing throughout the week. In addition, information about the importance of promoting wellbeing is shared during the week. This time the theme of the week is brain’s wellbeing.

– The world is a chaotic place where you need a space to stop and take care of your own wellbeing. I think that wellbeing skills play a significant role in today's working life and therefore it would be important for everyone to make their own wellbeing a priority. If wellbeing were not an important issue, there would hardly be a need for Wellbeing Week, states ISYY's BRIDGES project coordinator Riina.

The theme of the Wellbeing week will be approached from many different angles, such as through nutrition, culture and exercise. Campus restaurants offer discounts on snacks and Finnish Kennel Club's Care dogs arrive on campus to be petted. In connection with the week, a traditional Sports Afternoon is organized, which is exempted from teaching from 12.15 pm forward. On the Sports Afternoon, there are plenty of different sports opportunities for UEF’s students and staff. In addition, the program is also available online.

– According to the Finnish Brain Association, continuing stress strains our brain and at the same time it negatively affects how we manage in our daily life. Our brain needs activities, but also rest. While petting animals our blood pressure goes lower, the stress naturally eases and also regular eating gives us energy to work. Also with small things we can further our wellbeing, states Pääkkönen.
