HAPPY TUESDAY!

Spring semester is coming to an end and people are either heading back home or getting ready for summer activities. Hopefully you've had a wonderful semester and enjoyed your time in Joensuu and at the University of Eastern Finland!

You are reading the last Weekly Feed of the spring semester, but don't worry - Weekly Feed will be back on 16 August after a little summer break! ISYY offices are also going to be closed for summer, so make sure you visit the office 16 June at the latest.

Are you returning home and want to get rid of unnecessary items, such as kitchenware or sports equipment you might have accumulated during your exchange? Or did you do a massive spring cleaning and wish to get rid of some board games, bed sheets or towels? You can donate your unwanted glasses, mugs, plates, kitchen utensils, pots and pans, games, sheets and towels to the Student Union. Read more from the ISYY section on how to donate!

Kind regards,

Salla / kv.joensuu@isyy.fi

Summer bucket list 2022

Are you spending the summer in Finland? After the long winter and a few winter comebacks (Finns use the word ‘takatalvi’, see description here) summer is finally approaching fast so in the honor of this last Weekly Feed, we collected a list of (Finnish) things for you to do in an out of your campus city this summer!

TLDR; Summer in Finland is beautiful yet painfully short, so you’d better enjoy it - here are some ideas how:

  • Play mölkky or try frisbeegolf (ISYY members can loan sports equipment from the office for free)
  • Grill sausages or bake tikkupulla on a campfire
  • Swim in a lake to "throw away your winter coat" (heittää talviturkki in Finnish, means to swim in a lake for the first time after winter). You can find a list of  beaches in Joensuu here.
  • Watch midsummer’s bonfire and try traditional midsummer’s night spells. You can find some here.
  • Visit Koli or Tahko if you haven’t already
  • Visit nature trails. You can find a list of places near Joensuu here, or visit International Joensuu-Isyy Facebook profile and see nature trails under pictures.
  • Finnish nature is beautiful, so let’s keep it that way. Get to know Everyman’s Rights if you visit nature
  • Pick some forest berries (such as bilberries, raspberries, bog bilberries) and make a pie of the mixed berries you found. You can use the berries also to decorate your own popsicles or ice cubes!
  • Already seen EVERYTHING in Joensuu? Why don’t you visit some nearby cities, villages or sights?
    • Check out Visit Joensuu website for all North Karelian treasures near Joensuu
    • Have you visited the other campus city of UEF yet? Kuopio is beautiful during summer and worth a visit! See more here and here
    • Ilomantsi (or Pogosta, which means ‘village’ in Karelian language) is beautiful during summer. How many wooden bear statues can you spot?
    • Parikkala patsaspuisto is a sight to see. It’s an outdoor sculpture park with hundreds of eccentric statues made by artist Veijo Rönkkönen. Entry fee is voluntary and is used to maintain the park.

Student Organisations are independent, subject-specific associations. Student Organisations gather together students who study the same subject, which allows for them to get to know their peers and work together in the field of student advocacy. It's a great way to meet new people and attend a variety of activities and events with people studying the same subject as you!

Each Student Organisation has their own overalls colour, they are listed in ISYY's student calendars! You can watch this Youtube video to learn more about the Finnish higher education overall tradition.
