HAPPY TUESDAY!

And Happy New Year! Some of you are returning to the campus after the Christmas break, and some of you are starting your studies this January. Whether you already know your way around the city and the campus or you're new and wondering where to find everything - reading the first Weekly Feed of the year 2022 is a good start.

ISYY's campus offices are open with normal schedule, but due the current restrictions, the max amount of simultaneous customers is limited. The exact info can be found from office's entrance.

ISYY's Communications Questionnaire Results

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) conducted a communications questionnaire for its members from 15th to 29th November 2021. The questionnaire gained altogether 51 responses, thank you everyone who responded!

According to the answers, ISYY’s communications reached the respondents fairly well. It was also seen as fairly interesting and the amount of it was felt as suitable. The respondents also wished to have more information on certain topics, such as welfare and events. In addition, according to the answers, ISYY could communicate more in the University’s communication channels and on campuses. You can read more about the results on ISYY's website.

The results of the questionnaire will be utilised when planning ISYY’s communications in 2022.

ISYY’s Language Cafés are starting again!

Do you want to learn new languages or brush up your old skills and meet new people? We have the perfect opportunity for you: ISYY's Language Cafés!

In a Language Café, your peers and friends are your teachers and at the same time, they can be your students. You can also earn credits by participating in the Language Café activities. Join the Language Café info session on Thursday 20 January either at 9 am or at 4 pm on Google Meet to find out more! The content of the sessions is the same so you can choose which time suits you better.

ESN Joensuu - ISYY's international club

What is ESN Joensuu?

ESN Joensuu is a local section of ESN International, also known as the International Club of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). ESN Joensuu is for anyone and everyone who lives in Joensuu and likes to hang out with people from around the world - both Finnish and international students are very welcome to join us! If you are a member of ISYY, you are automatically also a member of ESN Joensuu. 

The most important task of the ESN Joensuu is to introduce Finnish culture and lifestyle to international students and to give Finnish students an opportunity to gain international experiences in Joensuu by arranging diverse events and activities. In addition, ESN Joensuu is active in promoting intercultural understanding on campus and in Joensuu. We believe in fun, friendship and unity in diversity! Anyone can become active in ESN Joensuu and we really hope you do by either coming along to our events or by joining one of the open meetings.

ESN Joensuu General Meeting on Tuesday 18 January 2022 at 4pm @ONLINE

In January, ESN Joensuu starts recruiting new members for its new board (and active members) so if you are interested in joining ESN, or would like to help by voting to elect the new board and also know a bit more about our beloved ESN section, you are more than welcome to join us! This semester, the meeting is online, link will be added on ESN Joensuu Facebook page

ESN Joensuu is made up of the board, the active members and the regular members. We are all equally as important, but it is the board that makes the big decisions and together with the active members gets the ball rolling to make student life fun for everyone! Come to the ESN Joensuu General Meeting organized at the beginning of each semester to find out more and perhaps join the board yourself! There is something for everyone and the positions are open to all those who are interested. Current positions are:

  • President is the leader of the club and supervises everything going on in ESN Joensuu.
  • Vice President and Local Representative helps the president with their duties and keeps in touch with ESN Finland.
  • Treasurer takes care of ESN Joensuu's finances.
  • Communication Manager is responsible for our social media accounts and spreads the word about upcoming events.
  • Two Event Managers, who are the masterminds behind the events.
  • Photographer and Graphic Designer takes tons of cool pictures during the events and designs promotional material like posters and tickets.
 
 
     
 
 

Want some reading for the evenings?

The ISYY office has a book exchange shelf. Come and pick up some books to read for free during your evenings or if you have books you don't need anymore, you can leave them on the shelf. You can browse the shelf during office's opening hours.

What BRIDGES?

What BRIDGES? The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote the well-being of students and increase commonality. The Co-ordinator of the project is Riina Pääkkönen (MAT).

The Hobby Buddy service continues also in 2022!

The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. By filling the Hobby Buddy application, we are looking for a suitable buddy for you!

  • There are different hobbies - you can search for a buddy for a coffee or movie company. We update a list of searched hobby buddies to our websites.
  • Last year over 100 signed up to service. We’ll get in touch when the right buddy is found. We read applications once a week, usually on Fridays.

Student, wanna get your voice heard on ISYY's blog?

Have you wanted to write about something important to you or take a stand on a conversation around you? In the ISYY’s blog, students get their own voices heard and the opportunity to spark a discussion. The topic of your writing may be related to for example, studying, student well-being as well as other current topics affecting students. Right now we are especially looking for the writings related to the students’ financial situation affecting mental health. We publish anonymous writings by request.

SYKETTÄ Joensuu

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members at the University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. You can see the prices for each sticker on the SYKETTÄ website and you can buy your sticker online or from the ISYY office. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes. Physical stickers are available to purchase at the ISYY office. Spring 2022 stickers are valid until 31.8.2022 so you can use the services during the summer as well!

The start of the SYKETTÄ classes will be postponed

According to the university’s new decision, the start of SYKETTÄ group exercise classes will be postponed. According to the current information, we will be able to start group exercise classes, contact-requiring sports and regular turns on 1.2.2022. You can use gyms (except the Tikkarinne gym) and go to badminton turns during January.

UEF questionnaire about students' experiences on diversity, equality and inclusion in studies

Dear University of Eastern Finland student!

We map students' experiences on diversity, equality and inclusion in studies at the University of Eastern Finland. By answering this survey, you participate in developing practices and services at the University of Eastern Finland. Responding to the questionnaire takes only approx. 10-15 minutes. The survey closes on 14.1.2022. You can answer the survey from the link below:

The results of the survey will be reported and discussed in various groups and institutions developing teaching and studying during spring 2022. Your response is processed confidentially, and the results are presented so that the individual respondent cannot be identified. You can find more information about the processing of personal data HERE.

International degree student: You can use FSHS services once you have registered

You can use FSHS services in the spring semester if you are studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and you have registered as an attending student at the UEF.

Note! Remember to also pay the university student's health care fee to Kela. The payment will remain unchanged in 2022 so it is 35.80€ for the spring semester. Read more about the payment and how to pay for it here.

You can use FSHS services once you have registered. FSHS services are available to you, during spring, once you have registered to as present for the spring semester, which starts 1.1.2022.

For the spring term, the deadline for the payment is 31 January provided that you have registered as attending by then.

YUFE D&I Grants 2021-2022 – Get Involved and contribute to YUFE’s D&I efforts

Would you like to organise activities or initiatives within the YUFE network and further explore diversity and inclusivity within YUFE?

YUFE Diversity and Inclusivity (D&I) Grants encourage innovative activities promoting diversity, inclusion and equity, in line with YUFE’s D&I promises and aims. These grants provide funding for interdisciplinary student-staff teams to translate ideas into activities, tools and research related to diversity and inclusion that could produce a sustainable impact on our YUFE community.

You can apply for a grant of £1,000 to fund your project.

All proposals have to be submitted using the D&I Grants Form. DEADLINE: 31 January 2022

Mielentekoja - one-on-one chat

Nyyti mielenTEKoja-chat is open and ready to ponder with you about any stumbling block or everyday dilemma in student life.

mielenTEKoja-chat offers university students one-on-ones peer support regarding studies and mental wellbeing. The volunteer on-call counsellors are regular students trained by Nyyti. The chat is anonymous and free of charge.

  • Download and use Koronavilkku app which helps you to track exposure to the virus. UEF recommends the use of the Koronavilkku app to its students and staff.
  • You can take Omaolo symptom assessment online at www.omaolo.fi. (Available in Finnish and English).
  • You can also call the Medical Helpline 116117, which is open 24/7. Your situation will be assessed over the phone and you will get instructions.

The New JobTeaser-service provides:

  • Events: Now mainly online events in Central Europe. In the future, Finnish and UEF events as well.

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself. 

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.

Weekly Feed is published on Tuesdays during the academic year, with the exception of holidays and a few other days. If you do not want to receive the newsletter anymore, you can unsubscribe the letter via the link (Click here to unsubscribe) located on the bottom of the letter.
