Come get your ESN Joensuu overalls from the ISYY office!

Show your dedication to Finnish student traditions and your love for ESN Joensuu by sporting our cool blue overalls!

These weird party pants are a very traditional part of higher education students' life in Finland - overalls are the official student party outfit in Finland! They represent you and your fellow students as a collective, as every student organisation has their own overall colour. You can learn to spot people and know what they're studying at every major student event! The colours of each student organisations' overalls are listed in your ISYY student calendar.

Overalls should also be decorated with badges. You can buy badges from the ISYY office and you can even earn a badge from different student events. If you would like to take part in this tradition, come and get your blue ESN Joensuu overalls and your first set of badges from the ISYY office!

Greetings from the BRIDGES coordinator!

Hello again, another week has gone by like crazy. The new academic year starts this week, so exciting! This is definitely one of the highlights of the year for me, when the university starts to have life again. I still remember my first day of university as a freshman. For many, it is probably the kind of day they will remember for the rest of their lives. If you are feeling nervous about the start of the new academic year, remember that being nervous is completely normal and remember to be kind to yourself.

Have a nice and peaceful start to the academic year!

-Riina

AEGEE Contact Joensuu

With the start of the new academic year 2022/2023 there is a new campus organisation in Joensuu: AEGEE Contact Joensuu! Are you a new student in Joensuu and / or looking for new opportunities for intercultural exchange in Europe, for getting involved in a student organisation, and for moving things into a more sustainable “greener” future? Then AEGEE Contact Joensuu is for you!

AEGEE stands for Association des États Généraux des Étudiants de l’Europe, which loosely translates as “European Student Association”. Contrary to what the title suggests, you don’t need to be a student nor do you need to be able to speak French to get involved. AEGEE is one of Europe’s biggest interdisciplinary student organisations. As a non-governmental, politically independent, and non-profit organisation, AEGEE is open to students and young people from all faculties and disciplines.

  • Find us on Instagram @aegee_contact_joensuu and befriend us on Facebook at Aegee Joensuu.
  • Our first event this semester is a Mölkky afternoon. Come discover a traditional Finnish game and meet international and Finnish Students! Meet us at 3pm on Saturday 10.09.2022 at Joensuu Church.

Degree student - remember to pay the FSHS fee!

You can use FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service) services in the spring semester if you are studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and you have registered as an attending student at the UEF.

Degree students pay the university student's health care fee to Kela. Note that Kela won't send you an invoice! The amount for the autumn semester is 35.80 €

If you are a degree student and you have social security coverage in another EU/EEA country, Switzerland or the United Kingdom, you do not have to pay the healthcare fee to Kela and you can still use the FSHS services. However, if you do not notify Kela that you pay social security coverage in your country before the due date, Kela can send you a reminder of the payment. Therefore, you should send Kela a copy of your valid European Health Insurance Card or other document showing that you have social security coverage in your home country. You can find more information about this change from Kela’s website.

What is my Student Association?

Student Associations are independent, subject-specific associations. Student Associations gather together students who study the same subject, which allows for them to get to know their peers and work together in the field of student advocacy. It's a great way to meet new people and attend a variety of activities and events with people studying the same subject as you!

Each Student Association has their own overalls colour, they are listed in ISYY's student calendars! You can watch this Youtube video to learn more about the Finnish higher education overall tradition.
