Tomorrow's autumnal equinox marks the official end of summer according to the calendar, so it's time to welcome autumn and the gorgeous autumn colours! ISYY and UEF participates in the North Karelia Pride Week

The North Karelia Pride Week is held on 22–26 September 2021. The theme of this year's Pride Week is "See me", and the full programme is available on the website of Pohjois-Karjalan Seta.

The University of Eastern Finland has also prepared a programme of its own in collaboration with Pohjois-Karjalan Seta and the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). For the University of Eastern Finland, participation in the Pride Week is one way of implementing equality and diversity.Throughout the week, the University of Eastern Finland will organise a range of events raising awareness of the diversity of sexuality and gender. The goal is to increase respect for diversity.

Pohjois-Karjalan Seta is the main organiser of the North Karelia Pride Week and the Pride Parade will be organised on Saturday 25th of September at 14.00.

Pride Week programme at the University of Eastern Finland

  • Monday, 20 September: Rainbow flags will be hoisted on the Joensuu Campus. In the spirit of equality, rainbow flags will also be flying on the Kuopio Campus this week
  • Monday, 20 September: UEF Library’s Pride-themed book exhibition opens both online and on the 1st floor of the Joensuu Campus Library. The exhibition is open until 30 September.
  • Thursday, 23 September at 13–14: Café Smart in the lobby of the Carelia building, Joensuu Campus. Diversity of sexuality and gender: what are we talking about, and how are we talking about it? Speaking in the science café are Professor of Gender Studies Jaana Vuori and Postdoctoral Researcher of Social Sciences Annukka Lahti. Please note that this event will be in Finnish. The science café will be streamed live and recorded. The event is free of charge and open to everyone. Coffee will be served. Stream link: Café Smart
  • Friday, 24 September at 12 noon: Keep your eyes open on both the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses – you may run into a Pride-themed flashmob!

Student Pride-flashmob outside Carelia and Snellmania on 24.9.2021 at 12 noon

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland ISYY is organising a Pride chalk colouring event on both campuses in Joensuu and Kuopio.

It will be possible to colour cobblestones in rainbow colours outside Carelia and Snellmania from 12–14 on Friday 24.9.2021. ISYY will bring chalks and will join you in celebrating the Pride week at the university!

International Coffee Break Quiz Night is here! (22.9)

The autumn semester is well underway and International Coffee Break has returned from summer holiday - now as a Quiz Night -edition! The first International Coffee Break Quiz Night of the semester is held on Wednesday 22 September at 5 pm on ISYY’s Discord channel! We’ll start with the Kahoot quiz, but there will be time for casual chatting and getting to know each other too.

What is the International Coffee Break?

ISYY has created an online platform to give an answer for your remote socialising needs: the International Discord server! Whether you want to get to know your fellow students from your own field, organise study dates, or just chat away, this Discord server is the place to find like-minded people for just that.

Language Café Leader Training 23.9. at 4 pm

In a Language Café, your peers and friends are your teachers and at the same time, they can be your students. When participating in the Language Café activities, you can also earn ECTS credits.

If you are interested in teaching a Language Café, fill in the Google Forms and let us know which languages you would be interested in teaching! You can sign up in Google Forms until Thursday 23rd of September 12 pm (noon). Also, join the Language Café leader training on Thursday 23.9. at 4 pm on Google Meet to find out the details of being a teacher and how to start your Café!

New employees for ISYY's offices during the autumn!

Maiju Laukkanen will continue to work in ISYY's Joensuu office. Maiju works in the office about once a month. Juulia Kokkonen will work in the Kuopio office on Tuesdays in customer service tasks.

ISYY has chosen Emmi Rajavuori as the organizer for the ISYY´s anniversary. The organiser is responsible for arranging the anniversary together with the anniversary team. The anniversary is on the 4th of December in Joensuu.

Decisions of the ISYY Representative Council meeting 4/2021

Meeting 4/2021 of the Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) was held on Thursday 16 September 2021.

At the meeting, ISYY's delegation was elected to the general meeting of the National Union of the University Students in Finland and a referral discussion was held on the general meeting materials.

The meeting approved the new rules of procedure for the ISYY Representative Council, as well as the amendment to the Rules of Procedure concerning the motion of vote of no confidence and the new amendment to the Rules of Procedure of the Preparatory Committee for the first time.

ISYY's and UEF’s Wellbeing Week 4.–8.10.2021

The Wellbeing Week of the Student Union ISYY and University of Eastern Finland takes place at the campuses on week 40, 4.-8.10.2021. During the Wellbeing week, there is a diverse program and lectures related to well-being and its maintenance.

There will be English language Kaamosinfo and a traditional Sports Afternoon. It is also possible to get to know local wellbeing actors at poster exhibitions on both campuses. Super popular Buddy dogs are also arriving to campuses for the student’s belly rubs.

This Autumn’s Smiles and Complaints Week Takes Place on 4.–10.10.2021

During the Smiles and Complaints Week, you can send feedback via the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland to ISYY, the University, FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service), Fazer Food&Co, or any other party involved in students’ life. You can give us feedback by filling in our electronic feedback form.

What deserves a smile? What’s wrong? What gives you grey hair? Tell us, and we’ll take your feedback forward! The feedback is given anonymously.

Apply for International Grant for Your Student Organisation!

This autumn, ISYY is giving out grants for student associations, campus organisations and clubs for international activities!

The grant is for the promotion of events and projects that further internationalisation. Examples of such projects can be new means that include international students in student associations, language exchange or how to get international and Finnish students to interact more. Be creative!

Two best applications will receive a grant of 500€ and three more a grant of 250€ each. Applications are open from August 24th to September 21st. Applications must be left online via the application form. Remember to send all attachments via email, instructions can be found from the link below:

Application period for halloped positions is 13.-27.9.2021

Hallopeds, or Student Representatives in administration, work in different organs of the University as decision-makers and look after student interests. However, students are not always familiar with their work. 

That’s why ISYY will publish halloped stories on our social media channels during the next two weeks. The stories will paint a picture of the important work of the Student Representatives and how they have taken part in the University’s decision-making.

The application period for halloped positions is 13.–27.9.2021, so you can already familiarise yourself with the open positions!

How to become a candidate in ISYY’s Representative Council Elections?

Nominating yourself as a candidate in the upcoming Representative Council Elections is quick and easy by using the electronic elections system or paper form!

1. The deadline for becoming a candidate is the 29th of September at 3 pm. This can be done electronically or with a paper form.

2. Choose a candidate list you want to nominate yourself from the Electronic election system. If you cannot find a list that fits you, you can establish your own list. Here are instructions on how to establish your own candidate list.

3. Fill in the Candidate’s approval and assurance in the Electronic election system. Alternatively, you can print or pick up a paper form from ISYY offices and fill in that. The form is returned to the ISYY office.

4. After you have received a confirmation from the Representative of the candidate list via email, you are a candidate in the ISYY Representative Council Elections.

Candidate Lists’ Campaigning Days

All candidate lists of the Representative Council Elections have a chance to present themselves and do campaigning on both campuses during certain dates. The lists of candidates are asked to sign up for the campaigning days via Google Forms beforehand.

The facilities for campaigning during the nomination of candidates are from 10 am till 2 pm the lobbies of Canthia and Snellmania in Kuopio as well as Carelia and Futura in Joensuu.

ISYY Book Exchange Shelf - bring a book, get a badge! 

You can bring some of your old books you do not need anymore to the book shelf or take a new book with you to enjoy in the evening.

The first 50 students on each campus who bring a book to the shelf will get a limited edition overall badge that is designed just for the book exchange. You will not get this badge from anywhere else!

ESN Joensuu welcomes all international students to Joensuu!

ESN Joensuu is a local section of ESN International, also known as the International Club of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). ESN Joensuu is for anyone and everyone who lives in Joensuu and likes to hang out with people from around the world - both Finnish and international students are very welcome to join us! If you are a member of ISYY, you are automatically also a member of ESN Joensuu. 

The most important task of the ESN Joensuu is to introduce Finnish culture and lifestyle to international students and to give Finnish students an opportunity to gain international experiences in Joensuu by arranging diverse events and activities. In addition, ESN Joensuu is active in promoting intercultural understanding on campus and in Joensuu. We believe in fun, friendship and unity in diversity! Would you like to join? Come to our General Meeting on Tuesday 21.9!

ESN Joensuu is made up of the board, the active members and the regular members. We are all equally as important, but it is the board that makes the big decisions and together with the active members gets the ball rolling to make student life fun for everyone! Every autumn and spring we are recruiting more board and active members. Please come to the ESN Joensuu General Meeting on Tuesday 21.9.2021 at 6 pm in AU205 (Aurora-building) to find out more and perhaps join the board yourself! See the Events -section of this newsletter for more info. There is something for everyone and the positions are open to all those who are interested. Current positions are:

  • President is the leader of the club and supervises everything going on in ESN Joensuu.
  • Vice President and Local Representative helps the president with their duties and keeps in touch with ESN Finland.
  • Treasurer takes care of ESN Joensuu's finances.
  • Communication Manager is responsible for our social media accounts and spreads the word about upcoming events.
  • Two Event Managers, who are the masterminds behind the events.
  • Photographer and Graphic Designer takes tons of cool pictures during the events and designs promotional material like posters and tickets.

If you aren't in the board, you can still help with organizing all the fun events whenever you have time as an active member! If none of these sound like your thing, you can just come to the events and have fun as a regular member like everyone else!

What BRIDGES?

The BRIDGES project now has its own section at ISYYs websites! What BRIDGES? The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote the well-being of students and increase commonality. The Co-ordinator of the project is Riina Pääkkönen (MAT).

The service started a week ago on 14th of September and at this moment one or more hobby buddies are currently being searched for these hobbies:

  • Kuopio: Cooking, figure skating, roller skiing, pair dancing, hiking, theater
  • Joensuu: Golf, hiking, TV series, baking, live music, role-playing D&D

By filling out the Hobby Buddy application, we are looking for a suitable buddy for you. The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests.

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members at the University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. You can see the prices for each sticker on the SYKETTÄ website and you can buy your sticker online or from the ISYY office. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes

 

Buying SYKETTÄ sticker is easy with the mobile application, and it is not necessary to get the physical sticker from a SYKETTÄ office. The application is available free of charge under the name Sykettä Joensuu, on Google Play for Android devices and on the App Store for iOS devices.

You can buy physical stickers at the offices of ISYY and POKA.

Sports afternoon 6.10.2021

The autumn Sports afternoon is coming again on 6.10.2021. Twice an academic year, the University of Eastern Finland and the Karelia University of Applied Sciences hold a sports afternoon together. By the decision of the university rectors, the Sports afternoons are lecture-free from 12:15 pm to 4 pm. On Sports afternoon, a wide variety of different exercise options are available around the city. SYKETTÄ Sports Services organises the Sports afternoon program, but no SYKETTÄ sticker is required to participate.

The Sports afternoon program will be published on 22.9.2021 and enrollments on activities start on 29.9.2021 - stay tuned!

Apply as a Bottoms Up Ambassador in SYKETTÄ Sports Services NOW!

Bottoms Up Ambassadors instruct active breaks to the students and staff members of universities at lectures, staff meetings and different campaigns. The aim of Bottoms Up is to decrease sitting and increase physical activity in our universities. You can apply alone, with a friend or with a small group of friends - you don't have to instruct the break exercise alone! We train the Bottoms Up Ambassadors and they will receive a group exercise sticker as a reward for their work.

Would you like to start attending a group exercise class, but feel intimidated to go there alone? Would you like to have a friend to chat with while jogging? Would you like to practice a sport but can’t do it alone? With the Sports Buddy service, we strive to bring together students interested in the same sports, and to lower the threshold of participating in instructed exercise classes.

SYKETTÄ Sports Services in Joensuu offers the Sports Buddy service to all university students, who would like to exercise with a friend or a group of friends.

Kilometrikisa – cycling competition 1.5. – 22.9.2021

Kilometrikisa is a light-hearted cycling competition for workplaces, departments, associations, clubs or any other teams. The aim is to encourage bicycle commuting and promote everyday cycling.

In Kilometrikisa every team member will record their cycling kilometers on the website and the team with the highest number of kilometers will win. Also prizes are raffled between all the participants. SYKETTÄ Joensuu and Kuopio have their own teams.

Nature trails in Joensuu

The nature in North Karelia is breathtaking throughout the year. You don't necessarily need a car to explore nature in Joensuu -  there are some outdoor spaces with short nature trails and beautiful surroundings for a picnic or making a campfire that are located quite close to the city centre. Those that are a bit further away are also definitely worth a visit!

Everyman's Rights - Freedom to roam

The nature in Finland is beautiful, so let's keep it that way - according to The Everyman's Rights (Jokamiehenoikeudet in Finnish), everyone has a right to roam the countryside, forage, fish with a line and rod, and enjoy the nature in Finland, but they should do it respectfully. So remember to leave no trace and respect the wildlife as you explore rural areas.

Student2Student – support and guidance, from students to students

The peer counsellors are soon-to-graduate students from our university, who have been trained for the job. They are there to support you when for example:

  • something is bothering you and you want to talk to someone
  • it feels hard to get a grip on your studies
  • remote studying is becoming exhausting
  • you don’t know who to ask advice from

Peer counsellors are there to listen to you and help you find the kind of support that is best tailored for your situation. Conversations with the peer counsellors are free of charge and confidential. You can call us during our opening hours or leave a callback request at any time, and we will call you back during our opening hours. Campus Orienteering is for all UEF students who wish to get to know campus services better. It contains control points where are brief descriptions of the services and voluntary tasks. Degree student - remember to pay the FSHS healthcare fee to Kela

Hi international degree student! Remember to pay the student healthcare fee (FSHS) to Kela by 30 September 2021. You can pay the fee in the Kela online service.

In 2021, the fee is EUR 35.80 per term. It is paid to Kela once per term (spring and autumn), i.e., twice a year. No bill will be sent on the healthcare fee, and thus you have to pay the fee on your own initiative. The amount of the fee is set annually.

Peppi will take you from Oodi to the 2020's this autumn! 

The new student data system Peppi will be deployed at UEF in three stages in October and November 2021 which also means saying goodbye to WebOodi. Peppi is an information system wherein different features are organized into virtual desktops based on user roles. Peppi comprises education planning, facility and resource reservations, and the student and study register.

On the student’s desktop, you can plan your studies, view your timetable, track your progress, schedule appointments, register for studies, procure a certificate of student status and a transcript of records, and view and edit your own contact information. Applying for recognition of prior learning will also be carried out in Peppi in the future.

Library is now in the Tuudo mobile app!

The library has started using the Tuudo mobile app — you do the same! In Tuudo, you get a digital library card (no more plastic cards!) and you can renew your loans, see your reservations and check the opening hours of the libraries. You will also receive library notifications via Tuudo. Watch the video to find out how you can start using Tuudo.

Nyyti ry - supporting students’ mental health

Nyyti’s Chat is a place for sharing ideas and experiences. Group chat is about different topics that affect the student’s everyday life.

Nyyti’s group chat is meant for all students. You don’t have to register or sign up to the chat. Conversation will be held via usernames. The chats are focused on one specific topic.The chats are also attended by employees and volunteers of Nyyti and occasionally by experts from different fields.

COVID-19 info - all in one place!

Your health and wellbeing is important to us, which is why we at ISYY have collected Covid-19 related info for you in one place! Here are the main points, you can find a more detailed list on the ISYY website. Stay safe!

1. Remember the basics;

  • Wash your hands, wear a mask and keep a safety distance of 2 metres.
  • Download and use Koronavilkku app which helps you to track exposure to the virus.

2. If you have any flu symptoms and suspect that you might have been infected with COVID-19, here is what you can do:

  • You should take Omaolo symptom assessment online at www.omaolo.fi. (Available in Finnish and English).
  • You can also call the Medical Helpline 116117, which is open 24/7. Your situation will be assessed over the phone and you will get instructions.
  • Alternatively, you can call your local health station and book an appointment for a test (Joensuu: Siilainen health station 013 330 2211).

The University of Eastern Finland provides face masks for its staff and students working and studying on campus free of charge. Face masks are available in the main lobbies of the campus building.

Please remember to wear a mask:

  • When queuing in a campus restaurant
  • When visiting the university’s library or other customer service point, and
  • When otherwise spending time on campus and attending lectures.

The app can be downloaded free of charge from App Store and Google Play.

The app will allow people to participate in preventing the spread of the virus and to protect their own and their loved ones' health.

Ride the bus for free on Wednesday 22.9!

On Wednesday 22.9 all Waltti bus lines are free in Joensuu, Kontiolahti and Liperi. Free bus rides also extend to the bus services between:

  • Lieksa–Joensuu
  • Ilomantsi–Joensuu
  • Kitee centre–Tohmajärvi–Joensuu
  • Outokumpu–Joensuu
  • Polvijärvi–Joensuu

Travel card lottery for new students

Take part in lottery, where you can win a personal JOJO Waltti travel card and one season ticket (30 days). You can participate if you study in Joensuu at the University of Eastern Finland or at Karelia University of Applied Sciences.

The period of the lottery is 6.9. – 26.9.2021.

  • You can participate by filling the internet form (only once): Waltti-arvonta
  • You study for the first year
  • You are a full-time student (minimum of 25 hours a week) and studying towards a degree. The length of the academic year must be the minimum of 8 months (for foreign exchange and degree students minimum of 3 months).

You must claim your prize at the latest 30.11.2021. You must certificate you studying by your student certificate. The prize is personal, you cannot transfer it forward.

The winners will receive an email and further information how to claim the prize in the beginning of October.

ESN Joensuu General Meeting (21.9 at 6pm)

Hello everyone/tervetuloa kaikille!

In September, ESN Joensuu starts recruiting new members for its new board (and active members) so if you are interested in joining ESN, or would like to help by voting to elect the new board and also know a bit more about our beloved ESN section, you are more than welcome to join us at Aurora AU205! (Don't forget your ISYY student card/ESNcard/UEF student certificate, you need it for voting).The board positions available are:

  • President
  • Vice president / local representative
  • Treasurer / trip coordinator
  • 2 event managers
  • Communications manager
  • Photographer / Graphic Designer

If you would like to apply for one of the positions, please prepare a ONE MINUTE PRESENTATION explaining who you are and why you should be chosen for the role.

You can also apply to be an active member and help out whenever you have the time. Don't be scared if you feel that you don't know anything about ESN! We'll have training and a hangout soon after the general meeting so all of us could get-to-know each other better and have the best time this semester.

We will bring hand sanitizer and masks (one per person). These safety procedures is to make sure we all stay safe and healthy. Please do not attend this event if you are sick nor have any symptoms of flu.

Joensuu Social Democratic Youth, Joensuu area Left Youth and Joensuu Green Youth bring you an amazing banner workshop on September 24th at 19.00, where we'll create a banner for the Pride march on Saturday 25th of September! Join us at Joensuun Työväentalo, Yläsatamakatu 7, 2nd floor.

Horse Inside Out in Ahjo Art Center 12.9 - 2.10.2021

Horse Inside Out is an immersive installation created by Danish Wunderland-collective. One person at a time will enter the installation, to have different sensory experience and to meet a performer. The installation is a combination of sound art, installation art, poetry and dance and performance art.

The experience in the installation takes about 15 minutes. You can book your time here, or on the spot at Ahjo Art Center. The gallery personel will guide you before entering the installation.

IMPORTANT: Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your booked time, as you must confirm your booking to the gallery personel when you arrive.

Enjoy free art exhibitions @Taidekeskus Ahjo

Ahjo is a beautiful art center in the middle of Joensuu. The picturesque building has 4 rooms with different exhibitions that change every few weeks, so there's always something new to see. Free entry!

Using a mask is strongly recommended when visiting museums and galleries. Remember to maintain a safe distance of 2 meters and do not visit the art center if you have flu symptoms.

You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself. 

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.
