This is the last week to return your Survival Package, so if you have one please return it to the ISYY office by Friday 10 December 11 am! Also, please note that our offices begin their Christmas holiday next week on Thursday so please take care of your ISYY matters and visit our office by 15 December.

ISYY Executive Board and Chairs for the Representative Council for the Year 2022 has been elected

The Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) elected an Executive Board and Representative Council Chairpersons for the year 2022.

Sami Tanskanen was elected as the Chairperson of the Executive Board of the Student Union (ISYY). Tanskanen has acted as the Vice Chairperson of the ISYY Executive Board 2021.

The nine other members of the Executive Board are: Vice Chairperson Jimi Virkkala, Eetu Hyvönen, Laura Kangasoja, Matti Karhunen, Saara Myllynen, Kaisa Rautiainen, Pauliina Ryökäs, Sonja Soinne and Ville-Pekka Timonen.

Emilia Honkanen was elected as the new Chairperson of the Student Union. Wilma Poutanen was elected as the first Vice Chairperson of the Representative Council, and Roosa Ylikoski was elected as the second Vice Chairperson.

Remember to return your survival package to the ISYY office by Friday 10th of December 2021

You can return your survival package to the ISYY office (Yliopistokatu 7, Haltia building, 2nd floor). You need to return your survival package by Friday 10 December at 11 am at the latest, or bring it to to the office any day before the deadline within opening hours.  

ISYY office is open: 

Mon, Tue and Thu 10-15
Wed 12-16
Fri (closed), but open on Friday 10.12 from 8am-11am 

When you return the package make sure that

  • all items listed in the pink slip are inside the box
  • the items are clean
  • the box is clean

We will give you back your 30€ deposit when you return your survival package if the items are inside the box and intact.

 

 
 
     
 
 

 

Exceptions in ISYY Office opening hours and Weekly Feeds during holidays

There are some exceptions in the opening hours of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) offices because of the Christmas Holidays. You can see the exceptions below. Please do the possible visits to our office before the 16th of December. The last Weekly Feed of the year 2021 will be sent on 14th of December and next year's first newsletter will be sent on 11th of January.

Welcome to ISYY’s interest advocacy coffee break! (Mon 13.12.2021 at 15-17 in Haltia)

Are you interested in different topics related to student interest advocacy? Join ISYY’s interest advocacy coffee breaks!

The interest advocacy coffee breaks are spaces for open discussion, where you can hear about news related to interest advocacy and share your own. Present are also the executive board members responsible for educational and social politics as well as ISYY’s own interest advocacy experts. 

The last Interest Advocacy Coffee Break of the year takes place in Haltia on Monday 13.12. at 15-17.

ISYY Rewarded Distinguished Student Union Actors in its 11th Anniversary Celebration Ceremonies

The 11th Anniversary Celebration of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) was held in Joensuu on December 4th 2021. As part of the ceremonies, ISYY granted three honorary medals and five golden achievement medals for distinguished Student Union actors. 

The first honorary medal was granted to Anna-Kristiina Mikkonen who worked as ISYY’s Secretary General in 2014–2019.  The second honorary medal was granted to Erja Leinonen, ISYY’s Accountant. The third honorary medal was granted to Harri Siiskonen, the Academic Rector of the University of Eastern Finland in 2017–2019 who showed particular positivity towards students and the ideas of SU.

What BRIDGES?

What BRIDGES? The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote the well-being of students and increase commonality. The Co-ordinator of the project is Riina Pääkkönen (MAT).

All I want for Christmas is you! And ISYY’s Advent calendar!

This year, the Student Union’s Advent calendar is BRIDGES-themed, which means that its contents promote wellbeing. The calendar has four windows that open once a week. The 2nd window of the Advent calendar revealed a communal gingerbread workshop to be held on Wednesday 8.12. 11am-13pm in Lukema building Kuopio and on Thursday 9.12. 11am-13pm in Haltia building in Joensuu. There is also hot glogg served in workshops. You don’t need to register for the workshop in advance, you are welcome to visit even for a short time. So get out your inner gingerbread decorator and arrive on site to enjoy yourself with other students. It is also possible to meet Riina, the BRIDGES project coordinator, at the workshop. Warmly welcome!

The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. By filling the Hobby Buddy application, we are looking for a suitable buddy for you! 

There are different hobbies - you can search for a buddy for a coffee or movie company. Right now there are students in Joensuu currently looking for hobby buddies to

  • literature
  • bird watching

We’ll get in touch when the right buddy is found. We read applications and combine them together once a week, usually on Fridays.

Have you wanted to write about something important to you or take a stand on a conversation around you? In the ISYY’s blog, students get their own voices heard and the opportunity to spark a discussion. The topic of your writing may be related to for example, studying, student well-being as well as other current topics affecting students. Right now we are especially looking for the writings related to the students’ financial situation affecting mental health. We publish anonymous writings by request.

SYKETTÄ Joensuu

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members at the University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. You can see the prices for each sticker on the SYKETTÄ website and you can buy your sticker online or from the ISYY office. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes. Physical stickers are available to purchase at the ISYY office. 

SYKETTÄ stickers for the spring season 2022 are on sale!

You can buy SYKETTÄ stickers for the spring season from our online shop, at the ISYY offices or via the mobile application.

Stickers are valid immediately from 1.12.2021 so you can participate in classes and turns for the rest of the year. The stickers are valid until 31.8.2022 so you can use the services during the summer as well. Autumn semester stickers will be valid until 31.12.2021.

Nature trails in Joensuu

The nature in North Karelia is breathtaking throughout the year. You don't necessarily need a car to explore nature in North Karelia and Joensuu -  there are some outdoor spaces with short nature trails and beautiful surroundings for a picnic or making a campfire that are located quite close to the city centre. Those that are a bit further away are also definitely worth a visit! You can explore North Karelia and Joensuu nature trails along with other Joensuu's must-see places on the Visit Joensuu website

Everyman's Rights - Freedom to roam

The nature in Finland is beautiful, so let's keep it that way - according to The Everyman's Rights (Jokamiehenoikeudet in Finnish), everyone has a right to roam the countryside, forage, fish with a line and rod, and enjoy the nature in Finland, but they should do it respectfully. So remember to leave no trace and respect the wildlife as you explore rural areas.

Rules are the same as on previous rounds: present your business idea which you would like to test to our program experts and you can get funding for the idea up to 4 000 €. Participation is free of charge.

Nyyti’s group chat is meant for all students. You don’t have to register or sign up to the chat. Conversation will be held via usernames.

Mielentekoja - one-on-one chat

Nyyti mielenTEKoja-chat is open and ready to ponder with you about any stumbling block or everyday dilemma in student life.

mielenTEKoja-chat offers university students one-on-ones peer support regarding studies and mental wellbeing. The volunteer on-call counsellors are regular students trained by Nyyti. The chat is anonymous and free of charge. 

Available in English on Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m.

Nyyti has created a booklet of Well-being skills for students in cooperation with Haaga-Helia . It is ideally suited to the independent strengthening of everyday well-being skills, as well as support and background material for conducting life skills courses.   • Download and use Koronavilkku app which helps you to track exposure to the virus. UEF recommends the use of the Koronavilkku app to its students and staff.
  • You can take Omaolo symptom assessment online at www.omaolo.fi. (Available in Finnish and English).
  • You can also call the Medical Helpline 116117, which is open 24/7. Your situation will be assessed over the phone and you will get instructions.

ELSA Joensuu International sitsit party (10.12)

It’s time for sitsit!

ELSA Joensuu is hosting a sitsit party in English for all the international (and non-international) students. The party consists of not so fine dining, singing, and it usually includes copious amounts of alcohol. Sitsit is an old tradition among students in Finland and we want to make sure that international students can get a taste of it.

Pohjois-Karjalan Seta English speaking hangout (7.12.) 

English speaking hangout Tuesdays once in a month. Next hangout 7.12. 18-20:30 at Rantakatu 23 A, basement floor.  

LGBTQIA+ Tuesdays are hangout evenings organized by local NGO North Karelia Seta, which organizes events, activities and support for sexual and gender minoritites and allies. We gather couple of times during this year and continue regurlarly every Tuesday 5pm-8pm starting January 2022. Our office is located at Rantakatu, see locations and times of the event.

Ote - Climbing centre’s student day on 8.12.

Ote - Climbing Centre will hold a student day on Wednesday 8.12.2021. With the valid student card climbing on the student day is 5€ including shoe rent (normally 13€). Doors are open between 12noon-10pm on the student day.

The staff will guide beginners to the start and give tips on routes if necessary. During the day it is possible to participate in a playful race with a group of friends max. 5 people. The goal of the race is to climb as many routes as possible and the team who climbed the most routes will be rewarded with one-time climbings. Ote gives the race tags at the cash desk.

  • Events: Now mainly online events in Central Europe. In the future, Finnish and UEF events as well.
  • Employer profiles: Now mostly international employers. In the future, Finnish organizations, too.
  • Guidance and messaging to support job seeking and career planning: Materials to support students, now produced by JobTeaser. In the future, targeted to Finnish labor market as well.

Information about Weekly Feed

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself. 

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.

Weekly Feed is published on Tuesdays during the academic year, with the exception of holidays and a few other days. If you do not want to receive the newsletter anymore, you can unsubscribe the letter via the link (Click here to unsubscribe) located on the bottom of the letter.
