This year's Winter Solstice lands on 21st December, which means that it's the shortest day of the year. After that, the days will become longer and there will be more sunlight! 

This is the last Weekly Feed of the year 2021. Weekly Feed returns on 11 January 2022, enjoy your holidays and see you next year!

Exceptions in ISYY Office opening hours and Weekly Feeds during holidays

There are some exceptions in the opening hours of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) offices because of the Christmas Holidays. You can see the exceptions below. Please do the possible visits to our office before the 16th of December. Next year's first newsletter will be sent on 11th of January.

What BRIDGES?

What BRIDGES? The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote the well-being of students and increase commonality. The Co-ordinator of the project is Riina Pääkkönen (MAT).

The BRIDGES co-ordinator Riina wishes you relaxing holidays and thanks all students who participated in the events and activities of the project during the autumn.

Here are the searched hobby buddies right now!

The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. By filling the Hobby Buddy application, we are looking for a suitable buddy for you! 

There are different hobbies - you can search for a buddy for a coffee or movie company. Right now there are students in Joensuu currently looking for hobby buddies to

  • Bird watching
  • Hiking

We’ll get in touch when the right buddy is found. We read applications and combine them together once a week, usually on Fridays.

Have you wanted to write about something important to you or take a stand on a conversation around you? In the ISYY’s blog, students get their own voices heard and the opportunity to spark a discussion. The topic of your writing may be related to for example, studying, student well-being as well as other current topics affecting students. Right now we are especially looking for the writings related to the students’ financial situation affecting mental health. We publish anonymous writings by request.

SYKETTÄ Joensuu

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members at the University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. You can see the prices for each sticker on the SYKETTÄ website and you can buy your sticker online or from the ISYY office. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes. Physical stickers are available to purchase at the ISYY office. 

SYKETTÄ stickers for the spring season 2022 are on sale!

You can buy SYKETTÄ stickers for the spring season from our online shop, at the ISYY offices or via the mobile application.

Stickers are valid immediately from 1.12.2021 so you can participate in classes and turns for the rest of the year. The stickers are valid until 31.8.2022 so you can use the services during the summer as well. Autumn semester stickers will be valid until 31.12.2021.

Nature trails in Joensuu

The nature in North Karelia is breathtaking throughout the year. You don't necessarily need a car to explore nature in North Karelia and Joensuu -  there are some outdoor spaces with short nature trails and beautiful surroundings for a picnic or making a campfire that are located quite close to the city centre. Those that are a bit further away are also definitely worth a visit! You can explore North Karelia and Joensuu nature trails along with other Joensuu's must-see places on the Visit Joensuu website

Everyman's Rights - Freedom to roam

The nature in Finland is beautiful, so let's keep it that way - according to The Everyman's Rights (Jokamiehenoikeudet in Finnish), everyone has a right to roam the countryside, forage, fish with a line and rod, and enjoy the nature in Finland, but they should do it respectfully. So remember to leave no trace and respect the wildlife as you explore rural areas.

Climate University courses from 18 universities open

The University of Eastern Finland is a part of The Climate University network, coordinated by the University of Helsinki. Network has formed a teaching cooperation contract between 18 universities.

The first Climate University courses open to all the students at the network universities will start in January 2022 and registration for them is open now. Learn more about the courses HERE

The first Climate University courses to open are:

  • Leadership for sustainable change (University of Helsinki is primarily in charge)
  • SystemsChange.now (Aalto University)
  • ClimateComms.now / Ilmastoviestintä.nyt (University of Oulu)

    The course materials are open for everybody, but to get credits for the courses, you must be registered as a student at one of the partnering universities or the Open University. The courses mainly run online, but in addition to remote assignments, the instructors responsible for each course will offer real-time instruction, as well, and will grade the students' performances.

Rules are the same as on previous rounds: present your business idea which you would like to test to our program experts and you can get funding for the idea up to 4 000 €. Participation is free of charge.

Nyyti Group Chat

Nyyti’s group chat is meant for all students. You don’t have to register or sign up to the chat. Conversation will be held via usernames.

Mielentekoja - one-on-one chat

Nyyti mielenTEKoja-chat is open and ready to ponder with you about any stumbling block or everyday dilemma in student life.

mielenTEKoja-chat offers university students one-on-ones peer support regarding studies and mental wellbeing. The volunteer on-call counsellors are regular students trained by Nyyti. The chat is anonymous and free of charge. 

Available in English on Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m.

Nyyti has created a booklet of Well-being skills for students in cooperation with Haaga-Helia . It is ideally suited to the independent strengthening of everyday well-being skills, as well as support and background material for conducting life skills courses. Your health and wellbeing is important to us, which is why we at ISYY have collected Covid-19 related info for you in one place! Here are some main points, you can find a more detailed list on the ISYY website. Stay safe!

  • Download and use Koronavilkku app which helps you to track exposure to the virus. UEF recommends the use of the Koronavilkku app to its students and staff.
  • You can take Omaolo symptom assessment online at www.omaolo.fi. (Available in Finnish and English).
  • You can also call the Medical Helpline 116117, which is open 24/7. Your situation will be assessed over the phone and you will get instructions.

Christmas Market (9.12-22.12)

Traditional Christmas Market is at the Joensuu Marketplace between 9.12 and 22.12.2021. The market is open from Monday to Saturday between 10 am - 5 pm. 

Vendors sell everything from local crafts to Christmas delicacies and you can meet Santa on Saturdays! 

 

 
 
     
 
 

 

International Christmas Carols (16.12 at 6 pm)

International Christmas carols concert is going to be held in Eno for the 19th time.This is an annual music event for you and your families where we sing songs in the languages spoken in Eno today. These languages are: Bangladeshi, English, Spanish, Dari, Filipino, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Karelian, Greek, Norwegian, Portugese, French, Lapp, Susu, Swedish, German, Serbian, Finnish, Turkish, Russian and Estonian. Also, the event includes community singing, musical performances, speeches and refreshments. 

Free entrance! Everyone is welcome to join the event. The event is organised by Eno parish and Veräjä ry.

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself. 

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.

Weekly Feed is published on Tuesdays during the academic year, with the exception of holidays and a few other days. If you do not want to receive the newsletter anymore, you can unsubscribe the letter via the link (Click here to unsubscribe) located on the bottom of the letter.
