Donate things accumulated during your exchange

Are you returning to your home and want to get rid of unnecessary items, such as kitchenware or sports equipment? You can donate your unwanted glasses, mugs, plates, kitchen utensils, pots and pans to the Student Union. We also take bed sheets and towels. We'll use them to make more survival packages for the next incoming exchange students. Or if you have bought ice skates and don't have enough space in your luggage to take them with you, you can donate them to us so other students can use them next winter.

If you want to donate something to ISYY, you can bring the items to ISYY's offices during our opening hours. Please note that we accept only items that are still usable so nothing broken please.

Did you rent a Survival Package?

This is just a reminder that if you have rented a survival package, remember to return it to the Student Union by Monday 13 June by 3 pm. (The deadline has been extended by a couple of days from the original which was 10.6.)

You should return the package and its content whole (unbroken) and clean to the ISYY office (in Studentia building, entrance C) during our opening hours and we'll give back your deposit (30 €) in cash. If the content of the survival package is dirty or broken, we'll deduct a fee from your deposit.

Summer bucket list 2022

Are you spending the summer in Finland? After the long winter and a few winter comebacks (Finns use the word ‘takatalvi’, see description here) summer is finally approaching fast so in the honor of this last Weekly Feed, we collected a list of (Finnish) things for you to do in your campus city this summer!

TLDR; Summer in Finland is beautiful yet painfully short, so you’d better enjoy it - here are some ideas how:

  • Play mölkky or try frisbeegolf (ISYY members can loan sports equipment from the office for free).
  • Grill sausages or bake tikkupulla on a campfire.
  • Swim in a lake to throw away your winter coat (heittää talviturkki in Finnish, means to swim in a lake for the first time after winter). You can find a list of  beaches in Kuopio here.
  • Watch midsummer’s bonfire and try traditional midsummer’s night spells. You can find some here.
  • Visit Koli or Tahko if you haven’t already.
  • Visit nature trails. You can find a list of places near Kuopio here.
  • Finnish nature is beautiful, so let’s keep it that way. Get to know Everyman’s Rights if you visit nature.
  • Pick some forest berries (such as bilberries, raspberries, bog /northern bilberries) and make a pie of the mixed berries you found. You can use the berries also to decorate your own popsicles or ice cubes!
  • Already seen EVERYTHING in Kuopio? Why don’t you visit some nearby cities, villages or sights?
    • Have you visited the other campus city of UEF yet? Joensuu is worth a visit!
    • Ilomantsi (or Pogosta, which means ‘village’ in Karelian language) is beautiful during summer.
    • Parikkala patsaspuisto is a sight to see. It’s an outdoor sculpture park with hundreds of eccentric statues made by artist Veijo Rönkkönen. Entry fee is voluntary and is used to maintain the park.
