HAPPY TUESDAY!

We have a few events this week which you might be interested in:

  • If you have any questions regarding the upcoming Representative Council Elections, you can ask them at the Election info today at 5 pm on Google Meet.
  • You can attend our International Coffee Break on Discord tomorrow at 5 pm. This time we'll have a Kahoot quiz to start the meeting.
  • If you're interested in becoming a Language Café leader and teaching a language to your fellow students, attend the leader training on Google Meet on Thursday at 4 pm.
  • On Friday at 12 pm (noon), there is a Student Pride-flashmob outside Carelia and Snellmania

Student Pride-flashmob outside Carelia and Snellmania on 24.9.2021 at 12 noon

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland ISYY is organising a Pride chalk colouring event on both campuses in Joensuu and Kuopio.

It will be possible to colour cobblestones in rainbow colours outside Carelia and Snellmania from 12–14 on Friday 24.9.2021. ISYY will bring chalks and will join you in celebrating the Pride week at the university!

ISYY and UEF participates in the North Karelia Pride Week 

The North Karelia Pride Week is held on 22–26 September 2021. The theme of this year's Pride Week is "See me", and the full programme is available on the website of Pohjois-Karjalan Seta.

The University of Eastern Finland has also prepared a programme of its own in collaboration with Pohjois-Karjalan Seta and the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). For the University of Eastern Finland, participation in the Pride Week is one way of implementing equality and diversity. Throughout the week, the University of Eastern Finland will organise a range of events raising awareness of the diversity of sexuality and gender. The goal is to increase respect for diversity.

 

 
 
 

Pride Week programme at the University of Eastern Finland: 

  • Monday, 20 September: Rainbow flags will be hoisted on the Joensuu Campus. In the spirit of equality, rainbow flags will also be flying on the Kuopio Campus this week.
  • Monday, 20 September: UEF Library’s Pride-themed book exhibition opens both online and on the 1st floor of the Joensuu Campus Library. The exhibition is open until 30 September.
  • Thursday, 23 September at 13–14: Café Smart in the lobby of the Carelia building, Joensuu Campus. Diversity of sexuality and gender: what are we talking about, and how are we talking about it? Speaking in the science café are Professor of Gender Studies Jaana Vuori and Postdoctoral Researcher of Social Sciences Annukka Lahti. Please note that this event will be in Finnish. The science café will be streamed live and recorded. The event is free of charge and open to everyone. Coffee will be served. Stream link: Café Smart
  • Friday, 24 September at 12 noon: Keep your eyes open on both the Joensuu and Kuopio campuses – you may run into a Pride-themed flashmob!

Pohjois-Karjalan Seta is the main organiser of the North Karelia Pride Week and the Pride Parade will be organised on Saturday 25th of September at 14.00.

 
 
     
 
 

 

International Coffee Break Quiz Night is here! 

The autumn semester is well underway and International Coffee Break has returned from summer holiday - now as a Quiz Night -edition! The first International Coffee Break Quiz Night of the semester is held on Wednesday 22 September at 5 pm on ISYY’s Discord channel! We’ll start with the Kahoot quiz, but there will be time for casual chatting and getting to know each other too.

Take a break from your studies, grab a cuppa and join us to get to know new people from both campuses. All are welcome!

Language Café Leader Training 23.9. at 4 pm

In a Language Café, your peers and friends are your teachers and at the same time, they can be your students. When participating in the Language Café activities, you can also earn ECTS credits.

If you are interested in teaching a Language Café, fill in the Google Forms and let us know which languages you would be interested in teaching! You can sign up in Google Forms until Thursday 23rd of September 12 pm (noon). Also, join the Language Café leader training on Thursday 23.9. at 4 pm on Google Meet to find out the details of being a teacher and how to start your Café!

ISYY and UEF's Wellbeing Week 4.-8.10.2021

The Wellbeing Week of the Student Union ISYY and University of Eastern Finland takes place at the campuses on week 40, 4.-8.10.2021. During the Wellbeing week, there is a diverse program and lectures related to well-being and its maintenance. There will be English language Kaamosinfo and a traditional Sports Afternoon. It is also possible to get to know local wellbeing actors at poster exhibitions on both campuses. Super popular Buddy dogs are also arriving to campuses for the student’s belly rubs.

During the Smiles and Complaints Week, you can send feedback via the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland to ISYY, the University, FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service), Fazer Food&Co, or any other party involved in students’ life. You can give us feedback by filling in our electronic feedback form.

What deserves a smile? What’s wrong? What gives you grey hair? Tell us, and we’ll take your feedback forward! The feedback is given anonymously.

Decisions of the ISYY Representative Council meeting 4/2021

At the meeting, ISYY's delegation was elected to the general meeting of the National Union of the University Students in Finland and a referral discussion was held on the general meeting materials.

The meeting approved the new rules of procedure for the ISYY Representative Council, as well as the amendment to the Rules of Procedure concerning the motion of vote of no confidence and the new amendment to the Rules of Procedure of the Preparatory Committee for the first time.

New employees for ISYY's offices during the autumn!

Maiju Laukkanen will continue to work in ISYY's Joensuu office. Maiju works in the office about once a month. Juulia Kokkonen will work in the Kuopio office on Tuesdays in customer service tasks.

ISYY has chosen Emmi Rajavuori as the organizer for the ISYY's anniversary. The organiser is responsible for arranging the anniversary together with the anniversary team. The anniversary is on the 4th of December in Joensuu.

 

 
 
     
 
 

 

Application period for halloped positions is 13.-27.9.2021

Hallopeds, or Student Representatives in administration, work in different organs of the University as decision-makers and look after student interests. However, students are not always familiar with their work. That’s why ISYY will publish halloped stories on our social media channels during the next two weeks. The stories will paint a picture of the important work of the Student Representatives and how they have taken part in the University’s decision-making.

The application period for halloped positions is 13.–27.9.2021, so you can already familiarise yourself with the open positions!

How to become a candidate in ISYY’s Representative Council Elections?

Nominating yourself as a candidate in the upcoming Representative Council Elections is quick and easy by using the electronic elections system or paper form!

  1. The deadline for becoming a candidate is the 29th of September at 3 pm. This can be done electronically or with a paper form.
  2. Choose a candidate list you want to nominate yourself from the Electronic election system. If you cannot find a list that fits you, you can establish your own list. Here are instructions on how to establish your own candidate list.
  3. Fill in the Candidate’s approval and assurance in the Electronic election system. Alternatively, you can print or pick up a paper form from ISYY offices and fill in that. The form is returned to the ISYY office.
  4. After you have received a confirmation from the Representative of the candidate list via email, you are a candidate in the ISYY Representative Council Elections.

Candidate Lists’ Campaigning Days

All candidate lists of the Representative Council Elections have a chance to present themselves and do campaigning on both campuses during certain dates. The lists of candidates are asked to sign up for the campaigning days via Google Forms beforehand. The facilities for campaigning during the nomination of candidates are from 10 am till 2 pm the lobbies of Canthia and Snellmania in Kuopio as well as Carelia and Futura in Joensuu. What is BRIDGES?

The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote the well-being of students and prevent exclusion. With the special grant, the University of Eastern Finland is implementing the BRIDGES project to increase well-being and communality. The project has several subcontractors, one of which is ISYY.

The aim of the project is to reduce the experience of loneliness and to prevent exclusion through activities that increase students' community and well-being.

The BRIDGES breakfasts are relaxed and communal hangouts that all students of the University of Eastern Finland are welcome to attend. The Breakfast moments are held six times during the fall on both campuses from 22 th of September forward.

The service started a week ago on 14th of September and at this moment one or more hobby buddies are currently being searched for these hobbies:

  • Joensuu: Golf, hiking, TV series, baking, live music, role-playing D&D

The sports afternoon is on Wednesday the 6th of October

University of Eastern Finland and Savonia University of Applied Sciences’ students and staff members are enjoying their sports afternoon on 6.10. at 12-16. Every event in sports afternoon is open for all students and staff members of Savonia and UEF as well as the students of HUMAK and Uniart Kuopio campuses. You don’t need a SYKETTÄ sticker to participate in these events! You have to register as a user if you haven’t done it before. You can find the registration form here.

The sports afternoon programme will be published on Wednesday 22nd of September on the SYKETTÄ website. Enrollment to the events starts on Wednesday 29th of September. Only riding event's enrollment starts on 22nd of September.

Remember that now you need to have a valid SYKETTÄ sticker in order to use SYKETTÄ services!

Student2Student – support and guidance, from students to students

The peer counsellors are soon-to-graduate students from our university, who have been trained for the job. They are there to support you when for example:

  • something is bothering you and you want to talk to someone
  • it feels hard to get a grip on your studies
  • remote studying is becoming exhausting
  • you don’t know who to ask advice from

Peer counsellors are there to listen to you and help you find the kind of support that is best tailored for your situation. Conversations with the peer counsellors are free of charge and confidential. You can call us during our opening hours or leave a callback request at any time, and we will call you back during our opening hours. Campus Orienteering is for all UEF students who wish to get to know campus services better. It contains control points where are brief descriptions of the services and voluntary tasks. Degree student - remember to pay the FSHS fee

Starting in January 2021, students in universities of applied sciences and universities who are entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS, Finnish abbreviation YTHS) must pay a healthcare fee to Kela. No bill will be sent on the healthcare fee, and thus you have to pay the fee on your own initiative.

The due dates are determined based on the date on which you have registered as attending. There are four possible due dates in each calendar year. For the autumn term, the due date is 30 September provided you have registered as attending by then. If the fee is paid after the due date, Kela will charge a fixed late-payment charge of EUR 5.

PEPPI WILL TAKE YOU FROM OODI TO THE 2020’S THIS AUTUMN!

The new student data system Peppi will be deployed at UEF in three stages in October and November 2021 which also means saying goodbye to WebOodi. Peppi is an information system wherein different features are organized into virtual desktops based on user roles. Peppi comprises education planning, facility and resource reservations, and the student and study register.

 

 
 
 

On the student's desktop, you can plan your studies, view your timetable, track your progress, schedule appointments, register for studies, obtain a certificate of student status and a transcript of records, apply for courses completed at another institution to be registered at UEF (recognition of prior learning), and view and edit your own contact information.

Nyyti ry - supporting students’ mental health

Nyyti’s Chat is a place for sharing ideas and experiences. Group chat is about different topics that affect the student’s everyday life.

Nyyti’s group chat is meant for all students. You don’t have to register or sign up to the chat. Conversation will be held via usernames. The chats are focused on one specific topic.The chats are also attended by employees and volunteers of Nyyti and occasionally by experts from different fields.

UEF: Contact tracing in Kuopio is overwhelmed

Contact tracing in Kuopio is currently overwhelmed and the health authorities will not be able to contact everyone who has been exposed to the coronavirus personally. The health authorities ask that everyone who attended student events in Kuopio during week 36 and who haven’t received two doses of vaccine would voluntarily stay under quarantine-like conditions until the end of the week 38, i.e., refrain from visiting public places and maintain physical distance from others.

  • If you have not yet received two doses of vaccine and you have symptoms of COVID-19, please get tested.
  • If you learn that you have been exposed to the coronavirus and you have symptoms of COVID-19, please get tested.
  • Do not go out in public or come to the campus, if you have any symptoms. Remember to wear a mask on your way to get tested
 
 
     
 
 

Changes in testing for the coronavirus in Kuopio

By the decision of Northern Savo authorities, made in September 13th, persons who got both vaccinations don't need a coronavirus testing, if they have just common respiratory symptoms or there is a week or longer period after their second vaccination. No need to make a test eather, if the person has got a coronavirus infection during last 6 months.

These changes don't concern persons exposed to coronavirus, persons working in Health and Social work services, or persons who are in a risk group. Asymptomatic persons will be still examined by consideration of the infectious disease physician according to coronavirus trace.

 
 
     
 
 

 

Kuopio walk-in covid vaccination continues

  • When? On Thursday, September 23rd from 08:00 to 15:00
  • Where? In Kuopio Hall
  • What? 1. and 2. (the booster vaccine) vaccinations, Moderna and Pfizer-BionTech vaccines.
  • To whom? To all citizens of Kuopio over the age of 12 and to students, who study in Kuopio (bring the study certificate with you).

City of Kuopio reminds you, that queues are possible during the walk-in vaccination. Please use a face mask and keep a safe distance.

  • The regional coronavirus steering group recommends to wear a mask actively, particularly indoors when distancing recommendations cannot be effectively observed. Examples of such situations are all public transport as well as public interior premises and public events. Masks are also strongly recommended for schools and other learning institutions.
     
  • If you have any flu symptoms and suspect that you might have been infected with Covid-19, here is what you can do: 
    • You should take Omaolo symptom assessment online. (Available in Finnish and English.)
    • If you think you have coronavirus, you can call Kuopio City Corona Help Line and book an appointment for a test: +358 44 704 6700. The line may be very busy at the moment because of the number of cases and exposures, but please wait patiently or call them again. The help line is open weekdays Mon-Thu from 8am to 3pm, Friday from 8am to 2pm and on weekend Fri-Sun from 8am to 12 noon.
    • You can also call the Medical Helpline 116117, which is open 24/7. Your situation will be assessed over the phone and you will get instructions.

UEF recommends face masks to staff and students

The University of Eastern Finland provides face masks for its staff and students working and studying on campus free of charge. Face masks are available in the main lobbies of the campus buildings. The face masks provided by the university are to be used on campus, i.e. they are not for personal use.

Hyvät Kuvat movie club

Hello Kuopio! Do you like movies or do you want to switch your brains off after you have studied the whole day? ISYY's movie club called Hyvät Kuvat are starting their autumn season this week

Hyvät Kuvat -movies can be seen in a movie theatre Kino Kuvakukko in Kuopio every Thursday at 17:30 and 20:00. With the season ticket for autumn 2021 you can attend to every 12 movies during this autumn. The price of the season ticket is 25€ for students and other discount groups and 30€ for others. You can get your ticket from ISYY's office or from Kino Kuvakukko -movie theatre before the act every Thursday.

Come sing with us!

We're a mixed choir operating on the Kuopio Campus. Our programme consists of choral arrangements of differently themed songs. Our members are current and past students, graduate students, exchange students, and university employees.

We're arranging open rehearsals in September as follows:

  • Tue 21.9 at 18-20 SN100 (Snellmania)

You'll first take part in the normal choir rehearsal, after which the small auditions will be held. The rehearsal will be held in English.

Non-stop Finnish language courses by Komapssi

Kompassi offers non-stop Finnish language courses three days in a week. These courses are open and free for all and they are held at Kompassi (Kauppakatu 40-42). You do not need to register / sign-up for these courses.

Kompassi offers two different levels of language learning (for beginners and for little advanced levels), through which you can learn grammar and language structure. Apart from this, you can practice speaking Finnish language in two different levels (beginners and for little advanced). Students are encouraged to speak more Finnish in these interactive groups.

Creative Shock attracts youth from all over the world to educate them about the concept of social business, its implementation, and its impact.

Participants have to solve two social business cases in the preliminary rounds. TOP 10 teams will be competing for the Grand Prize - 2500 euros.

Registration starts on the 1st of September and lasts until the 26th of September.

If you would like to have something featured in the Weekly Feed, please send a short (max. 500 characters including spaces), informative description of the event/activity in English to either kv.kuopio@isyy.fi (Kuopio events) or kv.joensuu@isyy.fi (Joensuu events).

Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Kuopio campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself.
