ISYY & UEF's Wellbeing week is here - take your pick of the diverse selection of lectures and events to learn more and promote your wellbeing. You can see the programme here. Tomorrow is the Sports Afternoon, which means that by the decision of the university rectors, the day is lecture free between 12:15 and 4 pm so that you can be active. If you want to try something different to your usual sport regime, check out the SYKETTÄ Sports Afternoon programme here.

There are still free season tickets for the Hyvät Kuvat movie club so come and get yours from the ISYY office if you're an exchange student at the UEF. The tickets are offered on first come, first served basis.

128 candidates for ISYY's Representative Council elections

This year, a total of 128 candidates from 10 different candidate lists are nominated in the Representative Council Elections of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY).

ISYY's Representative Council Elections will be held this autumn on both campuses in Joensuu and Kuopio. The advance voting for the Representative Council Elections takes place from 25 October to 29 October 2021 and the actual voting date is 3 November 2021.

All students who have registered as present at the University of Eastern Finland by 18 October 2021 and who are members of the Student Union are eligible to vote in the Representative Council Elections. Voting is done electronically. Before the pre-election vote, each eligible voter will be sent an e-mail with a personal link through which the electronic voting will take place.

ISYY Offices are closed during Autumn Holiday on week 42 (18.-24.10.).

Also our newsletters will take a break on that week. If you need to visit our office, please do that before the autumn holiday. If you have material for our newsletter of week 41, please send it to us no later than 8th of October. 


Answer the Student Livelihood Survey and Win a Gift Card of 150 Euros!

The student unions’ livelihood survey will examine students’ livelihood, employment and housing, as well as any changes regarding them. The survey generates relevant and up-to-date information on the financial status of university students across Finland.

The survey responses will be utilised for the livelihood survey and in student representation. Your responses are valuable and will contribute to fact-based advocacy.

It takes about 15 minutes to complete the survey and you can answer until October 31st. Responding to the survey is voluntary and can be done anonymously. Responses will be processed confidentially, and individual respondents will not be identifiable in the results.

ISYY will choose one student among their respondents who will win an S Group gift card valued at 150 euros.

ISYY and UEF's Wellbeing Week 4.-8.10.2021

The Wellbeing Week of the Student Union ISYY and University of Eastern Finland takes place at the campuses on week 40, 4.-8.10.2021. During the Wellbeing week, there is a diverse program and lectures related to well-being and its maintenance. There will be an English language Kaamosinfo and a traditional Sports Afternoon. It is also possible to get to know local wellbeing actors at poster exhibitions on both campuses. Super popular Buddy dogs are also arriving to campuses for the student’s belly rubs.

There are still Student Representative posts available!

Student representatives in administration, i.e. Hallopeds, are regular students who are there to make sure that the student perspective is always taken into account in UEF decision-making, and that their interests are being looked after.

As a halloped, you get to see and take part in decision-making and get valuable experience for the future, so it's definitely worth while to apply!

ISYY is now looking for Student Representatives to the Faculty Councils of the Philosophical Faculty, the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Sciences and Forestry, the University Collegiate Body and the Board of Appeal as a supplementary search.

The application period ends on Tuesday 12th of October 12.00 noon.

The Student Union (ISYY) is continuing the application period for student representative positions (i.e. hallopeds) to the University Collegiate Body and Faculty Councils of the University of Eastern Finland until the 8th of October.

So now's the perfect chance to apply! It really pays off to become a halloped, because doing so, you can receive attendance fees, credit points and valuable experience on administrative work which is useful for almost any kind of work. You also don't need to have any prior experience in order to apply. Submit your application via the electronic form by 8th of October at 12:00 noon.

What is BRIDGES?

The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote the well-being of students and prevent exclusion. With the special grant, the University of Eastern Finland is implementing the BRIDGES project to increase well-being and communality. The project has several subcontractors, one of which is ISYY.

The aim of the project is to reduce the experience of loneliness and to prevent exclusion through activities that increase students' community and well-being.

World Mental Health Day 10.10. and the Green Light for Equality-campaign 4.-10.10.2021!

This year, young people are encouraged to meet genuinely, appreciatively and equally, as the mind of every young person is valuable. There is a #vihreäävaloa campaign running all week to show off the green light for equality! ISYY also participates in the mental health week on ISYY’s social media channels.

Here's how to get involved:

  • Arrange green lighting on 10.10. at 6pm. Shine green light on your window, building or a monument.
  • Get dressed in green: choose green clothes or accessories. 
  •  Share your photos on Instagram and FB with the hashtags #vihreäävaloa #greenlightequality #kymppikymppi #maailmanmielenterveyspäivä and tag ISYY!



BRIDGES breakfasts

The BRIDGES breakfasts are relaxed and communal hangouts that all students of the University of Eastern Finland are welcome to attend. The Breakfast moments are held six times during the fall on both campuses from 22 th of September forward.

There is still room for Kuopio breakfasts, so register yourself for one time or for all times beforehand! The breakfasts will be held at Studentia’s Chapel on: 7.10., 13.10., 27.10., 3.11. and 10.11. Read more on our website and register today!

The service started a week ago on 14th of September and at this moment one or more hobby buddies are currently being searched for these hobbies:

By filling out the Hobby Buddy application, we are looking for a suitable buddy for you. The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests.

The sports afternoon is on Wednesday the 6th of October

Students can enjoy the sports afternoon tomorrow on 6.10. at 12-16. You don’t need a SYKETTÄ sticker to participate in these events! However, you have to register as a user if you haven’t done it already. You can find the registration form here. See the sports afternoon programme HERE.

Remember that if you use SYKETTÄ sports services, you have to have the SYKETTÄ sticker. If you come to the Studentia sports hall, please show your sticker to the person sitting next to the main door when you come in. Remember to follow the safety and hygiene guidelines when you participate in the SYKETTÄ activities. You can find the guidelines HERE.

Registration for the Language Centre’s spring 2022 semester courses is open in WebOodi until mid-October

This year, students must register for the Language Centre’s spring 2022 courses by mid-October. Registration is open in WebOodi.

The registration period for the spring semester courses is as follows:

  • 13 Sep–15 Oct (prioritized)
  • 14 Sep–16 Oct (non-prioritized)

If needed, registration will be open in Peppi in December. Registration for the spring semester 2022 exemption tests as well as retake exams will continue in Peppi.

The survey will help us estimate the climate impacts of student commuting. The results can also be used in improving commuting conditions and sustainability reporting. The new student data system Peppi will be deployed at UEF in three stages in October and November 2021 which also means saying goodbye to WebOodi. Peppi is an information system wherein different features are organized into virtual desktops based on user roles. Peppi comprises education planning, facility and resource reservations, and the student and study register.



On the student's desktop, you can plan your studies, view your timetable, track your progress, schedule appointments, register for studies, obtain a certificate of student status and a transcript of records, apply for courses completed at another institution to be registered at UEF (recognition of prior learning), and view and edit your own contact information.

Nyyti ry - supporting students’ mental health

  • Nyyti has created in cooperation with Haaga-Helia a booklet Well-being skills. Training for the students. It is  ideally suited to the independent strengthening of everyday well-being skills, as well as support and background material for conducting life skills courses. Check out the booklet HERE.
  • Nyyti’s group chat is meant for all students. You don’t have to register or sign up to the chat. Conversation will be held via usernames. The chats are focused on one specific topic.The chats are also attended by employees and volunteers of Nyyti and occasionally by experts from different fields.

Kuopio walk-in covid vaccination continues

  • When? Wed 6th of October
  • Where? In Kuopio Hall (Opistotie 4)
  • What? 1. and 2. (the booster vaccine) vaccinations, Moderna and/or Pfizer-BionTech vaccines.
  • To whom? To all citizens of Kuopio over the age of 12 and to students, who study in Kuopio (bring the study certificate with you).

City of Kuopio reminds you, that queues are possible during the walk-in vaccination. Please use a face mask and keep a safe distance.

Changes in testing for the coronavirus in Kuopio

By the decision of Northern Savo authorities, made in September 13th, persons who got both vaccinations don't need a coronavirus testing, if they have just common respiratory symptoms or there is a week or longer period after their second vaccination. No need to make a test eather, if the person has got a coronavirus infection during last 6 months.

These changes don't concern persons exposed to coronavirus, persons working in Health and Social work services, or persons who are in a risk group. Asymptomatic persons will be still examined by consideration of the infectious disease physician according to coronavirus trace.

  • The regional coronavirus steering group recommends to wear a mask actively, particularly indoors when distancing recommendations cannot be effectively observed. Examples of such situations are all public transport as well as public interior premises and public events. Masks are also strongly recommended for schools and other learning institutions.
  • If you have any flu symptoms and suspect that you might have been infected with Covid-19, here is what you can do: 
    • You should take Omaolo symptom assessment online. (Available in Finnish and English.)
    • If you think you have coronavirus, you can call Kuopio City Corona Help Line and book an appointment for a test: +358 44 704 6700. The line may be very busy at the moment because of the number of cases and exposures, but please wait patiently or call them again. The help line is open weekdays Mon-Thu from 8am to 3pm, Friday from 8am to 2pm and on weekend Fri-Sun from 8am to 12 noon.
    • You can also call the Medical Helpline 116117, which is open 24/7. Your situation will be assessed over the phone and you will get instructions.

UEF recommends face masks to staff and students

The University of Eastern Finland provides face masks for its staff and students working and studying on campus free of charge. Face masks are available in the main lobbies of the campus buildings. The face masks provided by the university are to be used on campus, i.e. they are not for personal use.

Hyvät Kuvat movie club

Hello Kuopio! Do you like movies or do you want to switch your brains off after you have studied the whole day? ISYY's movie club called Hyvät Kuvat are starting their autumn season this week

Hyvät Kuvat -movies can be seen in a movie theatre Kino Kuvakukko in Kuopio every Thursday at 17:30 and 20:00. With the season ticket for autumn 2021 you can attend to every 12 movies during this autumn. The price of the season ticket is 25€ for students and other discount groups and 30€ for others. You can get your ticket from ISYY's office or from Kino Kuvakukko -movie theatre before the act every Thursday.

Hyvät Kuvat movie club offers 49 exchange students a free season ticket! You can pick up your ticket from the ISYY office during opening hours. The tickets are offered on first come, first served basis and you cannot reserve a ticket.

Non-stop Finnish language courses by Komapssi

Kompassi offers non-stop Finnish language courses three days in a week. These courses are open and free for all and they are held at Kompassi (Kauppakatu 40-42). You do not need to register / sign-up for these courses.

Kompassi offers two different levels of language learning (for beginners and for little advanced levels), through which you can learn grammar and language structure. Apart from this, you can practice speaking Finnish language in two different levels (beginners and for little advanced). Students are encouraged to speak more Finnish in these interactive groups.

The New JobTeaser-service provides:

  • Europe-wide job market: with nearly 17 000 job and traineeship offers. The service has opended to Finnish employers 25.11. and positions previously advertised on the Aarresaari.net-platform are now directed to JobTeaser.
  • Events: Now mainly online events in Central Europe. In the future, Finnish and UEF events as well.
  • Employer profiles: Now mostly international employers. In the future, Finnish organizations, too.
  • Guidance and messaging to support job seeking and career planning: Materials to support students, now produced by JobTeaser. In the future, targeted to Finnish labor market as well.

Remember to attach lights to your bicycle!

As the evenings are getting darker quicker, remember to wear reflectors and start using lights on your bicycle. When riding at dusk or in the dark, the Finnish law requires that a bicycle has a white or light yellow headlight and a red rear light. If you don't have these, you can be fined by the police. You can increase your visibility in the dark by wearing a reflector tag or a reflector vest.
