HAPPY TUESDAY!

Please note that our offices begin their Christmas holiday next week on Thursday so please take care of your ISYY matters and visit our office by 15 December.

Our ice skates are now ready to be borrowed at our office! You can borrow a pair for yourself for a week for free if you are an ISYY member! You can skate already in one of the Kuopio's synthetic ice rinks. See the opening hours and detailed information here.

Exceptions in ISYY Office opening hours and Weekly Feeds during holidays

There are some exceptions in the opening hours of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) offices because of the Christmas Holidays. You can see the exceptions below. Please visit our office to take care of your matters before the 16th of December. The last Weekly Feed of the year 2021 will be sent on 14th of December and next year's first newsletter will be published on 11th of January.

ISYY Executive Board and Chairs for the Representative Council for the Year 2022 has been elected

The Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) elected an Executive Board and Representative Council Chairpersons for the year 2022.

Sami Tanskanen was elected as the Chairperson of the Executive Board of the Student Union (ISYY). Tanskanen has acted as the Vice Chairperson of the ISYY Executive Board 2021.

The nine other members of the Executive Board are: Vice Chairperson Jimi Virkkala, Eetu Hyvönen, Laura Kangasoja, Matti Karhunen, Saara Myllynen, Kaisa Rautiainen, Pauliina Ryökäs, Sonja Soinne and Ville-Pekka Timonen.

Emilia Honkanen was elected as the new Chairperson of the Student Union. Wilma Poutanen was elected as the first Vice Chairperson of the Representative Council, and Roosa Ylikoski was elected as the second Vice Chairperson.

ISYY Rewarded Distinguished Student Union Actors in its 11th Anniversary Celebration Ceremonies

The 11th Anniversary Celebration of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) was held in Joensuu on December 4th 2021. As part of the ceremonies, ISYY granted three honorary medals and five golden achievement medals for distinguished Student Union actors. Read from the link below who got the medals.

Borrow ice skates from ISYY's Office!

Do you want to go ice skating but you don't want to buy your own ice skates? No worries, you can now borrow them from ISYY Office!

During this autumn we have updated our sports equipment selection so that we can offer better services to our members. Especially winter sport equipment, like ice skates have been a highly wanted addition to our selection. With ISYY membership you can borrow sports equipment from the ISYY Office for free for one week for your own use.

The Last Interest Advocacy Coffee Breaks of the Year on 13.12.

Are you interested in different topics related to student interest advocacy? Join ISYY’s interest advocacy coffee breaks!

The interest advocacy coffee breaks are spaces for open discussion, where you can hear about news related to interest advocacy and share your own. Present are also the executive board members responsible for educational and social politics as well as ISYY’s own interest advocacy experts.

The next coffee break takes place on Monday 13.12. at Lukema from 3 pm till 5 pm.

Reminder to return your survival package by Friday

The deadline for returning the survival package is Friday 10 December by 3 pm if you rented the package just for the autumn semester. (Unfortunately the deadline cannot be extended.)

You should return the package and its content clean and unbroken to the ISYY office (in Studentia building, entrance C) and we'll give back your deposit (30€). If the content of the survival package is dirty or broken, we'll deduct a fee from your deposit.

The Coordinator of International Affairs will be working at the office on 10 December till 3 pm so although the customer service desk is closed, you'll be able to return your package on Friday.

 

 
 
     
 
 

 

It is time to apply for shifts at Studentia band rehearsal space in Kuopio for Spring 2022!

You can now apply for a shift at Studentia Band Reheasal Space by filling an online application form. Application form is open until Monday 13th of December at 9am. Spring shifts are valid from 1st of January to 31st of May 2022. All those who have applied for a shift will be contacted during week 50.

What is BRIDGES?

The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote the well-being of students and prevent exclusion. With the special grant, the University of Eastern Finland is implementing the BRIDGES project to increase well-being and communality. The project has several subcontractors, one of which is ISYY.

The aim of the project is to reduce the experience of loneliness and to prevent exclusion through activities that increase students' community and well-being.

All I want for Christmas is you! And ISYY’s Advent calendar!

This year, the Student Union’s Advent calendar is BRIDGES-themed, which means that its contents promote wellbeing. The calendar has four windows that open once a week.

The 2nd window of the Advent calendar revealed a communal gingerbread workshop to be held on Wednesday 8.12. 11am-13pm in Lukema building Kuopio and on Thursday 9.12. 11am-13pm in Haltia building in Joensuu. There is also hot glogg served in the workshops. You don’t need to register for the workshop in advance, you are welcome to visit even for a short time. So get out your inner gingerbread decorator and arrive on site to enjoy yourself with other students. It is also possible to meet Riina, the BRIDGES project coordinator, at the workshop. Warmly welcome!

Have you wanted to write about something important to you or take a stand on a conversation around you? In the ISYY’s blog, students get their own voices heard and the opportunity to spark a discussion.

The topic of your writing may be related to for example, studying, student well-being as well as other current topics affecting students. Right now we are especially looking for the writings related to the students’ financial situation affecting mental health. We publish anonymous writings by request.

Here are the hobby buddies we're looking for right now!

The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of UEF who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. By filling the Hobby Buddy application, we are looking for a suitable buddy for you!

There are different hobbies - you can e.g. search for a buddy for a coffee or movie company. Right now there are students currently looking for hobby buddies to

  • Kuopio: Pole dancing, salsa dancing, band activities, role-playing D&D, freediving

We’ll get in touch when the right buddy is found. We read applications and combine them together once a week, usually on Fridays.

Welcome to Christmas yoga on 14th December at 16.30 o`clock!

 In this class we will focus on easy exercises, opening up the body guidelines and overhauling the body. We activate our muscle tone and get flexibility and mobility in our bodies. This class is suitable for everyone!

This event is free and you don't need a valid SYKETTÄ sticker for enrolling in this class! However you need to be registered as a SYKETTÄ user. If you haven't done it yet, do it via this link.

Test your business idea with Draft funding!

Rules are the same as on previous rounds: present your business idea which you would like to test to our program experts and you can get funding for the idea up to 4 000 €. Participation is free of charge.

Apply for the program by January 17, 2022. The program will be carried out online.

Christmas Concert on 9 December

UEF Kuopion ylioppilaskuoro’s (UEF Kuopio Student Choir) Christmas Concert at Kuopio City Hall (in the great hall) on December 9 at 7 p.m. You will hear traditional Christmas carols as well as some more modern ones. Conductor Richard Nicholls.

The concert is free of charge but you can support the choir by purchasing a programme either in advance (from Kide.app) or in place. Price 10€ (5€ for students).

Support for using Peppi

  • The Peppi Handbook provides a lot of information on Peppi and how to use it. On the Students page of the Handbook you can find user instructions, previously published newsletters, and the recordings and slides of earlier info sessions. Remember the FAQ page as well! Note that to read the Handbook, you need to login with your UEF account.
  • Peppi-Helppi is open 29 November – 3 December from 12:15 pm to 1 pm (12.15-13.00) and on Tuesday 7 December from 4:15 pm to 5 pm (16.15-17.00) on Zoom. Ask for help online in Finnish or in English!
  • The Peppi support email helps with topics related to using Peppi at peppituki@uef.fi. With questions about your study attainments, please contact opiskelu@uef.fi.

  • The regional coronavirus steering group recommends to wear a mask when distancing recommendations cannot be effectively observed.
     
  • The University of Eastern Finland recommends the use of masks on campus! Also, UEF recommends the use of the Koronavilkku app to its students and staff.
     
  • If you have any flu symptoms and suspect that you might have been infected with Covid-19, here is what you can do: 
    • You should take Omaolo symptom assessment online. (Available in Finnish and English.)
    • If you think you have coronavirus, you can call Kuopio City Corona Help Line and book an appointment for a test: +358 44 704 6700. The line may be very busy at the moment because of the number of cases and exposures, but please wait patiently or call them again. The help line is open weekdays Mon-Thu from 8am to 3pm, Friday from 8am to 2pm and on weekend Fri-Sun from 8am to 12 noon.
    • You can also call the Medical Helpline 116117, which is open 24/7. Your situation will be assessed over the phone and you will get instructions.

The New JobTeaser-service provides:

  • Europe-wide job market: with nearly 17 000 job and traineeship offers. The service has opended to Finnish employers 25.11. and positions previously advertised on the Aarresaari.net-platform are now directed to JobTeaser.
  • Events: Now mainly online events in Central Europe. In the future, Finnish and UEF events as well.
  • Employer profiles: Now mostly international employers. In the future, Finnish organizations, too.
  • Guidance and messaging to support job seeking and career planning: Materials to support students, now produced by JobTeaser. In the future, targeted to Finnish labor market as well.

Food Business Challenge 2022 is here!

Food Business Challenge competition seeks new business ideas and innovations in the agri-food sector from field to fork. There are two competition categories: an idea category seeking extravagance and bold change, and a startup category with an emphasis on business opportunities and feasibility. The competition has money prizes for the finalists. In addition, the winner of the startup category gets expert services for testing and developing the idea.

Remember to attach lights to your bicycle!

As the evenings are getting darker quicker, remember to wear reflectors and start using lights on your bicycle. When riding at dusk or in the dark, the Finnish law requires that a bicycle has a white or light yellow headlight and a red rear light. If you don't have these, you can be fined by the police. You can increase your visibility in the dark by wearing a reflector tag or a reflector vest.
