HAPPY TUESDAY!

The Parliamentary Elections will be held next Sunday the 14th of April. Next Sunday is also Palm Sunday and as part of Finnish Easter traditions young children will decorate twigs of willows with feathers and silk paper and will go from door to door offering blessings in return for treats. They might dress up as little witches as Finnish Easter traditions mix religious references with customs related to the long-awaited arrival of spring (all though it might not seem like it at the moment).

Kind regards,
Heli

Changes to Student Healthcare - What Does It Mean for You?

Starting from 1 January 2021, students using the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) will be charged a mandatory healthcare fee of approximately 77 euros per academic year. In the future, no appointment fees will be charged for using FSHS services.

The Parliament of Finland passed the act on healthcare for university students (HE 145/2018 vp) on 1 March 2019. The new law on healthcare for university students will come into force on 1 January 2021. With this change, degree students of universities of applied sciences, including master’s degree students, will also be entitled to use the services of the FSHS. According to the law, all university degree students registered as present are entitled to use the services of the FSHS. All non-degree students will be excluded from services provided by the FSHS. This applies to international exchange students who will not complete their degrees in Finland.

According to the law, Kela will organise healthcare services for university students and collect healthcare fees. In the future, the FSHS healthcare fee will be clearly separated from the Student Union membership fee. The FSHS will continue to provide student healthcare services.

National Repositary Library's Universal Borrowing Service Ends

Universal borrowing is a library service where customers have been able to request books from the National Repository Library to our library via UEF Finna and then borrow and renew them.

However, now the National Repository Library is in the process of changing their old library system to a new one and the new system does not support the universal borrowing service. For this reason, the universal borrowing to our customers will end. The possibility to request books from the National Repository Library via UEF Finna will end on the 28th of March 2019. At the same time the possibility to renew current loans will end as well.

What to do now? Now that the service ends, you must return the books you have requested from the National Repository Library on due date. If necessary, you can change them from UB loans to UEF interlibrary loans by contacting: kaukopalvelu@uef.fi.

If you have books on loan via universal borrowing, you will receive further instructions by email.

And in future? Books from the National Repository Library can be ordered as interlibrary loans. Interlibrary loan service is subject to a charge. Furthermore, the UEF students and staff members can still request article copies of the National Repository Library’s journals free of charge via UEF Finna.

More information: library@uef.fi

A Total of 656 Electorial Candidates Responded to a Telephone Survey by Univeristy Students: 80% of the Respondents Would Raise Study Grants by 100 Euros

Between 25 February and 24 March 2019, university students made telephone calls to gather responses from candidates in the 2019 general election. They were seeking answers to questions related to university funding, students and climate change. The calls were supplemented by an electronic questionnaire which the candidates could answer if they could not be reached by phone. Student unions in all electoral districts participated in the joint election campaign telephone survey by the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) and the Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (SAMOK).

A total of 656 candidates were reached by calls, or 38 percent of the current candidates nominated by the parliamentary parties. Only 34 of current members of parliament responded, or around a fifth of all candidates seeking re-election.

The Student Movement’s Themes and Main Goals for the Finnish Parliamentary Elections 2019

SYL's and SAMOK's election campaign #educationprkl is focusing on the topics that are important to students: financing and development of higher education, students subsistance and climate change reduction. At the same time, the decision-makers will be challenged: we want to see solutions and be heard. That's why we ask the decision makers through the campaign: What’s your solution?
