HAPPY TUESDAY!

Celebrating Easter is a Christian tradition that is practiced across many countries in the world. In Finland Easter is not only a religious holiday, but also a "Spring Break" that gives an opportunity to have a breather from work/studies for a long weekend. Despite its religious roots, for many Finns Easter is all about spring flowers, chicks, bunnies, chocolate eggs as well as spending time with friends and family. Read more about Finnish Easter traditions HERE and HERE. Please note that Easter may affect opening hours and public transportation schedules.

You might also like to try a very Finnish Easter food/dessert called MÄMMI (in the picture). I suggest to add a lot of cream and sugar (or vanilla custard) as per tradition ;)

Kind regards,
Heli

Buy an ISYY lyre for your student's cap

Did you know that you can buy a lyre of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland for your student's cap from our offices? In Kuopio, even the Velj'mies statue has bought ISYY's lyre for his student's cap, so come and buy yours as well!

The lyre costs 16 euros and can be bought from our offices during their opening hours.

The black and white student's cap is a symbol of graduation from a Finnish high school. The tradition dates back to the early 19th century. Students who graduate from a Finnish high school will put the student's caps on at the graduation ceremony and wear the student's cap the graduation day. After the graduation day the student's caps are usually worn only on Vappu and academic celebrations.

2019 European Elections

This spring is a good time to make a difference. We have already voted in the Finnish Parliamentary Elections, and now we have a chance to set the course of the European Parliament for the next five years!

The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative organs of the European Union. EU citizens elect members of the parliament in direct elections held in every member state every five years. The previous elections were held in 2014.

Advance voting for the European Elections is held from 15 to 21 May in Finland, and from 15 to 18 May in other countries. In Finland, the election day is Sunday 26 May.

EU citizens may vote either in their home state or in the state they live in. According to the EU Act concerning the elections, no one may vote in more than one Member State of the European Union in the same election. A citizen of another EU Member State living in Finland may choose to vote in the European Parliamentary elections in Finland (the Finnish European Parliamentary elections). This requires, however, that he or she has enrolled (by the 7th of March) with the voting register in Finland beforehand to the local register office. If you are allowed to vote for another EU Member State in Finland, you should get the instructions how to vote from the relevant authority of your home state.

Everyone who is entitled to vote in the Finnish European Parliamentary elections may vote at a general advance polling station, regardless of their municipality of residence. Anyone who is entitled to vote may also vote abroad at Finnish embassies. On election day, you must vote at the polling station assigned to you!

If you would like to learn more about the European Elections, what the European Parliament does and how it affects you, come to the election panel at the Carelia lobby on Friday 26 April, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. You can also meet candidates at the Carelia lobby from 10 am to 2 pm.

1.5.2019 ESN Joensuu "Vappu Picnic" in Ilosaari at 12 noon

VAPPU (May Day) is a very (un)Finnish day :D

Vappu is one of the biggest celebrations of the year in Finland - it is like the Finnish version of the Carnival. During Vappu, you can dress up in silly costumes, hats, and wigs. The must-have accessories are colourful balloons and serpentiini (paper streamers). Students will be wearing their overalls and also that white, sailor-like cap that they get at their high school graduation.

In Joensuu, hundreds of students gather on the Ilosaari island (next to Kerubi) for a huge picnic. You can’t miss this event if you’re in Joensuu that day - it's when everyone is out partying, socialising and having a ball! This event is free and open to everyone!

Katkos/Offline is a physical theatre piece about the difficulty of interaction. It deals with the conflict between our thoughts and deeds – existing with yourself and with others, and talks about our fundamental longing for love and the need for confrontation.

The episodic storyline consists of six short stories. The performance is inspired by everyday situations we come across when confronting with each others, our fears, hopes and needs – and all the crazy thoughts inside our heads. With identifiable moments from every day life, the performance gives the audience the empowering chance to laught with and at oneselves. Katkos/Offline is a performance for those, whom are interested in turning over the ordinary issues and puzzles we run into.

Pieni Kollektiivi is a physical theatre group from Finland. Performers, Emma Virta and Ines Kakkonen, combine elements of physical theatre and corporeal mime in a very unique way. The sound design and music of the performance is composed by Joonatan Turkki.
