If this is your first Finnish Vappu ever, let me tell you a bit about it: Vappu (May Day) is the Finnish version of Labour Day, but it is also the biggest student event of the academic year in Finland. Vappu is celebrated in a carnival-style manner, often for few weeks at a time.

The culinary traditions of vappu include sima and munkki (a form of mead & sugar coated doughnuts) and tippaleipä (deep-fried funnel cakes). Not particularly healthy, but very delicious! You can read more about the Finnish Vappu celebrations from HERE.

However, this year Vappu is going to be a bit different - we will celebrate it from our homes. ISYY's Wappuradio is broadcasting every day to keep you company (and in the mood for Vappu!) until the 1st of May, and if you are still looking for something to do, check out this #virtualvappu website!

Please also remember that the 1st of May is a public holiday and most offices and Alko are closed and public transport will run according to Sunday schedule.

Let's spread only Vappu atmosphere, not the virus! ❤️

Kind regards,

P.S. If you need to contact ISYY staff, the contact information can be found here and our services are available by email and phone during office hours.

ISYY’s Wappuradio is on!

ISYY’s Wappuradio is broadcasting every day until the 1st of May. You can listen to a variety of different programs (made just for you!) between 2 pm and 10 pm from ISYY’s YouTube channel. The daily program can be found from ISYY’s Finnish webpage around noon every day.

Follow the Vappu traditions on the 30th of April!

For the first time ever, it will be possible to follow Vappu traditions of both campus cities through a special broadcast on Wappu radio. The broadcast begins with capping of the Alkukivet in Joensuu around 4 pm. After Joensuu’s broadcast we will move to Kuopio where the Veljmies statue will be washed and capped by Velj’mies (Brother Man) and Siskotyttö (Sister Girl). The special broadcast ends with the traditional immersing of Professor.
