HAPPY TUESDAY!

I hope you all had a great online vappu! Finnish spring has shown its true colors in the past few weeks as we've had rain, sunshine, and snow. We have a Finnish word for the unwanted return of winter in Finland; we call it 'takatalvi'. Let's hope it's just sunshine from here on out!

We have collected our last tips for free time for this newsletter. Hopefully you have found them useful!

Have a nice week!

Kind regards,
Elina

P.S. If you need to contact our staff, the contact information can be found here and our services are available by email and phone during office hours.

Learn languages

  • Do you want to learn Finnish outside your classroom? Try a free online course by University of Helsinki or find another useful course from this website. If Finnish feels impossible to learn and you need some motivation, watch YouTuber Dave Cad’s videos! Dave is from England and lives in Helsinki now. He is learning Finnish and his new challenge is to make videos in Finnish and test his knowledge.

  • Are you tired of learning Finnish or got excited about learning a new language? Why not learn more languages with Duolingo? This works also if you want to refresh your memory on a language you learnt earlier.

  • Would you like to learn about different varieties of English? Search eWAVE for Jamaican creole, Kenyan English, Tok Pisin, Chicano English or Philippine English and many other varieties.

  • Do you want to sound British or American when you’re speaking in English? Practice with this (BrE) and this (AmE) video.

  • Improve your pronunciation by practicing the most common English words either with a British accent, an American accent or an Australian accent.

  • Do you know what “bring owls to Athens”, “head in the clouds”, “make ends meet”, “Elvis has left the building” or “uncle Tom Cobley and all” mean? Learn about idioms!
