HAPPY TUESDAY!

If you're planning on staying in Finland this summer, you might want to check out VisitFinland.com for some ideas of what you could do here. Also, a heads-up if you cycle! There is a new law coming into effect on 1 June 2020 that requires all bicycles to have a red light on the back of the bike.

This is the last Weekly Feed of this academic year and the next newsletter will be published on the 18th of August 2020. We would like to THANK YOU for reading the newsletter. If you are leaving Joensuu for good and would like to stop receiving Weekly Feed, please remember to cancel your subscription by using the "cancel subscription"-link at the bottom of the newsletter or do it HERE. I hope you have enjoyed your time in Joensuu although this spring has been unusual.

Have a great summer and enjoy the holidays!

Kind regards,
Elina
kv.joensuu@isyy.fi

P.S. If you need to contact our staff, the contact information can be found here and our services are available by email and phone during office hours.

Return your survival package

Before you return your package, please make sure that all items are inside the package and they are clean. You can check what was included in the package from the pink/red list that was inside the package when you got it or from our website. Remember to clean the box itself too.

Instead of leaving your package in Elli’s apartment, please bring your survival package to the front of the Haltia building (outside the entrance, not into the office because our office is closed due to COVID-19). Pick a time that suits you the best in Doodle. A staff member will be outside Haltia waiting for you to return your package and to give you back your deposit. Returns have to be made on the given dates between 1pm and 2pm (13.00-14.00). You can also return ISYY’s sports equipment or keys to Tikkarinne at the same time, but other services are not available during these times.

If you cannot find a suitable time or you couldn’t reserve a time, please email Elina (kv.joensuu@isyy.fi) asap.

Remember to keep a safe distance to other students if there are many students returning their packages at the same time and wash your hands before coming! Also, come only if you are healthy.

UEF campus pastors offer support during COVID-19

You can visit the campus pastor to talk about anything concerning your personal life: personal relationships, coping, a sudden turn of events in your life, a crisis, or sorrow. You can feel safe talking with the campus pastor, and you are not required to be a member of the church or possess a certain view of the world. You can come and talk simply as yourself and about your issues. The conversations are free of charge and absolutely confidential. E-mail is the best way of arranging a suitable time for the conversation.

New traffic rules come into effect from the beginning of June

“Among the changes it notes are the possibility of parking on the left side of streets where no ban is posted and the chance of drivers getting ticketed for driving too slowly on roads where a minimum speed limit is in force.

The use of winter tyres will no longer be determined by the calendar, as has been the case up until now. Instead, although the law mentions the period of November through the end of March for the standard use of studded snow tyres, drivers can use them at any time that road conditions make them a safer option.

Cyclists are also reminded that from 1 June, if they ride at dusk or in the dark, they need to not only have a red tail light, but also a visible light on the front of their bikes.” Yle.fi

Cyclists will get a 40€ fine if they break rules. Read more about the rules from here (NB! from 2014).

UEF Libraries will be renovated in summer 2020

The Joensuu campus library will be renovated from 15 June to 7 August 2020. For the time being, the service is operated as a book picking service within the limits dictated by construction site restrictions.

The Kuopio campus library will be renovated from 1 June to 31 August 2020. The book collections are not in use because the books will be packed away for the duration of the renovation. Book picking service that started on June 14th, continues for the time being, but only from the collections of the Joensuu Campus Library and the KUH Medical Library.

Books can be returned to the book drop hatches of Joensuu and Kuopio campus libraries.

Even though the library facilities are closed, the library is at your service – read more.

Apply now for financial aid for the summer months

Students can get financial aid in the summer, provided that they will be studying during the summer months. Students can apply for financial aid for the summer months by accessing Kela’s online customer service or by filling in and printing out this form.

Financial aid is granted for example for lecture courses, set book exams, on-the-job-training or for working on your final project or thesis. Financial aid for the summer months is available in the form of study grant and government guarantee for student loans. Students who have been granted general housing allowance will continue to receive the allowance regardless of whether they are studying during the summer or not. Recipients of housing allowance must, however, remember to request a review of the allowance for example for summer earnings.

COVID-19 International Student Well-being Study coordinated by University of Antwerp

The COVID-19 outbreak has impacted on higher education. Students may experience stress because of the Covid-19. The outbreak may have had a significant impact on your life (where you live, who you are able to meet in real life, how you can make a living, etc.). This study investigates if these changes have impacted your well-being and health.

The results of the study are important in finding out the situation of students and they will inform on how to prepare for similar situations in the future. Because this survey is conducted in multiple countries, we will also be able to access the impact of local/national policy on well-being and health in the student population.

Most students need about 10-15 minutes of their time to fill out the survey.
