Traffic rules for cyclists and pedestrians

Joensuu is a relatively small city and the cycling paths reach all corners of the city, so cycling is an easy, convenient, healthy and inexpensive way to get around. And since it is a very popular means of transportation it is good to know the traffic rules, that way we all will have safe and swift journeys. And remember that it is always the safest and smartest choice to use a helmet when cycling. A lamp for your bicycle is also a must as is stated in the traffic rules and the local police is quite strict when it comes to biking in the dark without a lamp and you might end up with a 40€ fine if caught without one.

The days are also getting shorter and the evenings darker so remember to use a reflector when walking and biking in the dark. When its dark, reflectors help drivers to see pedestrians - even in urban areas. Rain and fog reduce driver’s ability to see, especially in the dark. The car’s windows may fog up when driving commences. Also, a dirty windshield or headlights have an adverse effect on visibility. Street lights and advertisement lights, as well as shadows of trees and bushes, may make it more difficult to see pedestrians or cyclists crossing the street.

You can buy yourself a reflector from all the major supermarkets and stores. It's one of the cheapest "life insurances" you can get. Stay safe!
