Only a week until Vappu (May Day)! All the student organisations, ISYY included, are organising loads of events to celebrate the 1st of May and the celebrations have already begun.

The culinary traditions of vappu include sima and munkki (mead & sugar coated doughnuts, in the picture) and tippaleipä (deep-fried funnel cakes). Not particularly healthy but delicious! Traditional savoury Vappu foods include frankfurters and potato salad which can easily be packed for a picnic. The 1st of May is the day when it seems like most Finns have risen from hibernation and go on a picnic, despite the weather (which is quite often dreadful). Read more about the Finnish Vappu celebrations from HERE and HERE.

Please also remember that the 1st of May is a public holiday and most offices and Alko are closed, public transport will run according to Sunday schedule.

Hauskaa Vappua! Have a nice Vappu!

Kind regards,

Buy an ISYY lyre for your student's cap

Did you know that you can buy a lyre of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland for your student's cap from our offices? In Kuopio, even the Velj'mies statue has bought ISYY's lyre for his student's cap, so come and buy yours as well!

The lyre costs 16 euros and can be bought from our offices during their opening hours.

The black and white student's cap is a symbol of graduation from a Finnish high school. The tradition dates back to the early 19th century. Students who graduate from a Finnish high school will put the student's caps on at the graduation ceremony and wear the student's cap for the graduation day. After the graduation day the student's caps are usually worn only on Vappu and academic celebrations.

Use Your Vote in the European Elections 2019!

This spring is a good time to make a difference. We have already voted in the Finnish Parliamentary Elections, and now we have a chance to set the course of the European Parliament for the next five years!

What Elections?

The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative organs of the European Union. EU citizens elect members of the parliament in direct elections held in every member state every five years. The previous elections were held in 2014.

Advance voting for the European Elections is held from 15 to 21 May in Finland, and from 15 to 18 May in other countries. In Finland, the election day is Sunday 26 May.

EU citizens may vote either in their home state or in the state they live in. According to the EU Act concerning the elections, no one may vote in more than one Member State of the European Union in the same election. A citizen of another EU Member State living in Finland may choose to vote in the European Parliamentary elections in Finland (the Finnish European Parliamentary elections). This requires, however, that he or she has enrolled with the voting register in Finland beforehand (by the 7th of March) to the local register office. If you are allowed to vote for another EU Member State in Finland, you should get the instructions how to vote from the relevant authority of your home state.

Everyone who is entitled to vote in the Finnish European Parliamentary elections may vote at a general advance polling station, regardless of their municipality of residence. Anyone who is entitled to vote may also vote abroad at Finnish embassies. On election day, you must vote at the polling station assigned to you!

4.-5.5.2019 Katkos physical theatre piece in Näyttämö (Pilkontie 7) at 7 pm

Katkos/Offline is a physical theatre piece about the difficulty of interaction. It deals with the conflict between our thoughts and deeds – existing with yourself and with others, and talks about our fundamental longing for love and the need for confrontation.

”Particularly engaging, warm and touching – ” ( review in newspaper Kaleva 29.9.2018)

The episodic storyline consists of six short stories. The performance is inspired by everyday situations we come across when confronting with each others, our fears, hopes and needs – and all the crazy thoughts inside our heads. With identifiable moments from every day life, the performance gives the audience the empowering chance to laught with and at oneselves. Katkos/Offline is a performance for those, whom are interested in turning over the ordinary issues and puzzles we run into.

Pieni Kollektiivi is a physical theatre group from Finland. Performers, Emma Virta and Ines Kakkonen, combine elements of physical theatre and corporeal mime in a very unique way. The sound design and music of the performance is composed by Joonatan Turkki.
