Apply for SYL’s Advisory Board for Development Cooperation!

Are you inspired by global development and promoting education internationally? Are you concerned about climate change? Are you a persistent communicator, good at forming networks, or know a lot about funding? Do you want to put some of your knowledge to the use of the rest of the world?

We are looking for people with lots of ideas who are committed and motivated to join the Advisory Board for Development Cooperation (KENKKU) of SYL. The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) represents 15 member organisations and 135,000 university students. The development cooperation advisory board advises SYL’s executive board on development cooperation and administers SYL’s development cooperation projects together with the Development Policy Adviser.

However, we don't expect you to be a development cooperation professional – it's enough if you have motivation and the desire to learn about development cooperation and global education. We expect KENKKU members to commit to their tasks and be motivated but KENKKU is also meant for developing your personal expertise. KENKKU members are expected to attend most meetings during their term.

Use Your Vote in the European Elections 2019!

This spring is a good time to make a difference. We have already voted in the Finnish Parliamentary Elections, and now we have a chance to set the course of the European Parliament for the next five years!

What Elections?

The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative organs of the European Union. EU citizens elect members of the parliament in direct elections held in every member state every five years. The previous elections were held in 2014.

Advance voting for the European Elections is held from 15 to 21 May in Finland, and from 15 to 18 May in other countries. In Finland, the election day is Sunday 26 May.

EU citizens may vote either in their home state or in the state they live in. According to the EU Act concerning the elections, no one may vote in more than one Member State of the European Union in the same election. A citizen of another EU Member State living in Finland may choose to vote in the European Parliamentary elections in Finland (the Finnish European Parliamentary elections). This requires, however, that he or she has enrolled with the voting register in Finland beforehand (by the 7th of March) to the local register office. If you are allowed to vote for another EU Member State in Finland, you should get the instructions how to vote from the relevant authority of your home state.

Everyone who is entitled to vote in the Finnish European Parliamentary elections may vote at a general advance polling station, regardless of their municipality of residence. Anyone who is entitled to vote may also vote abroad at Finnish embassies. On election day, you must vote at the polling station assigned to you!

Burnout Study for University Students

Burnout is a long term response to occupational interpersonal stressors associated with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low self-efficacy. This syndrome has been identified as highly prevalent in university students. However, the study of the Burnout Syndrome determinants and consequences are still incipient. Thus, the goal of this project is to identify and relate the determining factors of the Burnout Syndrome in higher education students.

Your participation is voluntary. If you want to participate we ask that you answer all items in a sensible and honest way. This study presents 6 questionnaires that should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete.

The questionnaire does not require identification and the data collected will be confidential, you will be able to stop the questionnaire at any moment with no penalty whatsoever. This research will further our knowledge about the determinants of the Burnout Syndrome, its antecedents and consequences in higher education students, which will contribute significantly to the development of prevention strategies of this Syndrome.

IKEM Academy "Social innovation in the energy transition" – Apply for free spots!

IKEM, a non-profit think tank in Berlin, organizes an annual expert event called the IKEM Academy: Energy and Climate, during which a different focus topic is addressed each year.

The topic of the IKEM Academy this year is "Social innovation in the energy transition". During the 5 days from 15-19 July, the Academy will start with a look at the slowly increasing awareness on a policy level that people must be at the heart of the energy transition, if we are to reach our climate targets and mobilize multi-level financing.

Our program then narrows its scope to the regional and local level, investigating examples of citizen driven initiatives that help shift our energy system and society to a low-carbon model. The last day will focus on sustainable cities, and the innovative social entrepreneurship and business models that have emerged over the past years.

Our Academy is highly international, we welcomed more than 60 different nationalities to Berlin in the past years, all passionate about driving climate action and affecting positive change, together.

This year, we would like to offer two free spots for students interested in the topic, which would include site visit to the energy autonomous village, Feldheim, workshops, lectures, and a BBQ.
If you are interested, you can apply through our online system here. Please make sure that you include "#SYL" in the "Note" section of the application in order to be eligible for the free spot. The deadline for the free spot application is May 31, 2019.
