As usual, the newsletter is divided into the following sections:

  • ISYY

2019 European Elections

This spring is a good time to make a difference. We have already voted in the Finnish Parliamentary Elections, and now we have a chance to set the course of the European Parliament for the next five years!

The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative organs of the European Union. EU citizens elect members of the parliament in direct elections held in every member state every five years. The previous elections were held in 2014.
Advance voting for the European Elections is held from 15 to 21 May in Finland, and from 15 to 18 May in other countries. In Finland, the election day is Sunday 26 May.

A citizen of another EU Member State living in Finland may choose to vote in the European Parliamentary elections in Finland. This requires, however, that he or she has enrolled (until 7th of March) with the voting register in Finland beforehand to the local register office. If you are allowed to vote for another EU Member State in Finland, you should get the instructions to vote from your relevant authority of your home country.

Everyone who is entitled to vote may vote at a general advance polling station, regardless of their municipality of residence. Anyone who is entitled to vote may also vote abroad at Finnish embassies. On election day, you must vote at the polling station assigned to you!

If you would like to learn more about the European Elections, what the European Parliament does and how it affects you, come to the election panel at the Carelia lobby on Friday 26 April, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. You can also meet candidates at the Carelia lobby from 10 am to 2 pm.

At the Kuopio campus, ISYY and SAVOTTA will organise a similar panel on Thursday 9 May. More information on the Kuopio panel will be released at a later date.

25.4. Students’ Mental Health Day: Mindfulness Break for Students

Nyyti ry organizes a Student Mental Health Day on April 25th 2019. This year the theme of the campaign is stress. The aim of this theme is to point out, how recognizing and reducing stress positively affects our mental health.

According to the Finnish Student Health Survey 2016, one third of university students reported high stress levels and one fifth very high levels. Students also reported that they need the most support with stress management. From this point of view, the theme of the Mental Health Day is essential for student’s wellbeing. By supporting the student’s stress management skills we can prevent and take care of their mental health issues and enhance their ability to study.

During the campaign, we will be sharing varied and interesting stress-related content on social media. Stay tuned and follow our hashtag: #ruuhkakevät (springrush)

On Students’ Mental Health Day on Thursday 25 April, everyone is encouraged to participate in the #ruuhkakevät campaign. Study communities around Finland can think up ideas and actions for recognizing stress and promoting mental wellbeing in their everyday lives. The mental health day is open to all, to students and professionals alike. Imagination is the only limit when organizing activities. You can also participate in Facebook.
