Food assistance for students

Higher education institutions operating in Joensuu and Kuopio have acknowledged that the coronavirus epidemic is placing some students in need of special assistance. The educational institutions have now joined forces, making donations to support their students. These donations are used to purchase food vouchers that will be distributed to students by parishes’ diaconal workers.

The vouchers will become available via the customer service points of diaconal work in the city centre of Joensuu and Kuopio, and diaconal workers will distribute the food vouchers to students contacting them. Students will need to show proof of identity, and to prove that they are students of the university or the university of applied sciences, upon collecting their voucher.

Questionnaire to students regarding the 2021 municipality election

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY), Student Union of Savonia University of Applied Sciences SAVOTTA, and Student Union of Humak University of Applied Sciences HUMAKO’s Kuopio division have made an inquiry aimed for students about their experiences of the city of Kuopio.

The goal of the inquiry is to survey which of the city’s services work, which don’t, and which are the most important ones for students. Based on the responses, the student unions will lobby the municipality election candidates and the election platforms of the parties so, that the interests of the students will be heard better in Kuopio’s future decision making.

Among the respondents, a raffle will be held for two gift vouchers (á 30 €) to restaurant Panza (Ajurinkatu 26, Kuopio)!

FSHS reform and the healthcare fee for students on spring 2021

Starting in January 2021, students in universities of applied sciences and academic universities who are entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (YTHS) will pay a healthcare fee to Kela, instead of the student unions. Students who are liable to pay the fee are students who have registered as attending and who are completing a bachelor's or master's level degree.

Incoming exchange students, students in open university and students in tailor-made, customer-specific training programmes are not entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service, and thus they do not have to pay the healthcare fee.

Kela will begin to collect the healthcare fee in the spring term of 2021. The healthcare fee can be paid via Kela's e-service starting in December 2020. University students pay the healthcare fee for the autumn term 2020 to their student union.

You can read more about the FSHS reform here.

Answer the Survey on the Wellbeing of students in times of COVID-19!

The COVID-19 outbreak has impacted on higher education. Students may experience stress because of the Covid-19. The outbreak may have had a significant impact on your life (where you live, who you are able to meet in real life, how you can make a living, etc.). This study investigates if these changes have impacted your well-being and health.

The results of the study are important in finding out the situation of students and they will inform on how to prepare for similar situations in the future. Because this survey is conducted in multiple countries, we will also be able to access the impact of local/national policy on well-being and health in the student population.

Are you interested in season work on the Finnish countryside?

Farms around Finland are struggling to get enough workforce in these difficult times due to the pandemic. Crucial workforce from abroad cannot offer their helping hands due to the coronavirus, and this means the countryside is in desperate need of spring and summer season workers.

Every available pair of hands is needed in order to secure domestic food on Finnish dinner tables, and this is where you can step in and help! If, for example, your summer job plans have been cancelled due to the pandemic, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

How to apply?
Employers announce rural vacancies on two websites. New vacancies appear
daily. You will find more detailed descriptions of the tasks and instructions for sending in your application on this and this website. On the last site, you will find the rural seasonal vacancies by writing kausityö2020 into the search box.
