Call for volunteers for a Community Art Project in Kuopio campus

The Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) in Kuopio has applied for funding for a project called ‘Equal Community Art on campuses’. With the funding they are organising a Community Art Project at the University of Eastern Finland’s (UEF) Kuopio campus on 8.-10.4.2024 as a part of Students Mental Health Week organised by Nyyti ry. The Art Project is organised in cooperation with cultural space Kulttuuripaja Luode and the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY).

With this volunteer call we are searching students to join organising and planning the Community Art Project in Kuopio campus. ISYY will be organising a corresponding event on Joensuu campus at the same time. We will give more information on the Art Projects in March.

What is the Community Art Project about?

The purpose of the Kuopio FSHS project called ‘Equal Community Art on campuses’ is to bring the effects of art and culture in one's wellbeing as a perspective into the student’s wellbeing work. During the event, student’s will get to join creating the community art work together during three days, 8.–10.4.2024 at 11-15.30, by attending on a time that best suits for them. Theme of the artwork is equality. During the event, at the campus lobby there will be all needed materials and the student volunteers will be there to help and guide.

Until now, the wellbeing work in higher education institutions is mainly focused on giving information and on sports themed projects. Effects of culture and art to one’s wellbeing are now seen more and more as a part of furthering wellbeing and mental health. According to the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), art activities are in the center of involvement and communality and the feeling on involvement is an important factor in one’s wellbeing. With artificial and cultural methods we are enriching the day-to-day communication with each other, we aim to get our senses and mind to move and also to tempt our experiences and feelings to rise up.

What is the task of this volunteering?

The Community Art Project, how the artwork is executed and how equality is shown in the work, is planned by the cultural space Kulttuuripaja Luode together with the student volunteers. Students will get to join the planning with help of Kulttuuripaja Luode and at the same date there will be training for volunteers for their tasks.

Kulttuuripaja Luode will organise a training and planning afternoon for the volunteers on Thursday 14 March at 12–15. Joining the session is mandatory for the volunteers, so mark this date to your calendar if you are applying. People in Luode and the student volunteers can also discuss further planning sessions, which are voluntary.

Location: Kulttuuripaja Luode, Kasarmikatu 2, 70110 Kuopio.

The Art Project is held during three days and the responsibility for each day will be shared between the volunteers. The goal is to get six (6) volunteers, so that there will be 2 volunteers responsible for each day. The responsibilities will be shared when we have the volunteers.

After volunteering the students will receive a testimonial from UEF from working as a volunteer. Volunteers will also receive Finnkino cinema tickets.
