The Student Union (ISYY) is disappointed in UEF Board’s decision to shut down the Savonlinna campus. The Student Union’s (ISYY) belief in UEF as an institution of civilisation is crumbling. Fostering and upholding the quality and diversity of science, research and education, and assuming societal responsibility comprise the principles of civilisation. With this decision, UEF is sending a signal that it is not willing to uphold these core values.
The Student Union believes that centralising teacher training to one campus in Joensuu does not increase the popularity of the institution or the quality of research – rather the contrary. The quality of education cannot be secured by holding mass courses. How is UEF planning to take the needs of individual students into consideration during this transitional phase?
“UEF justifies its decision to centralise teacher training to Joensuu by having up-to-date information in regards to the Savonlinna campus. This decision signifies that UEF has forgotten what value the quality of research and higher education holds for students and society,” states the chairperson of the Executive Board Juho Ikonen.
The Student Union (ISYY) calls into question the view that all teaching and courses in the Savonlinna campus could be relocated to Joensuu’s current facilities. Neither the city of Joensuu nor the Joensuu campus is ready for a significant rise in the number of students. This presents a threat to the welfare and education of all students in Joensuu as the increasingly difficult situation in regards to teaching facilities and student housing continues to grow even worse.
