The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland
26.09.2025
The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) has decided to nominate a law student Emilia Enroth as a candidate for the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) for the year 2026. ISYY's Representative Council made the decision at their meeting on 25 September 2025.
Emila Enroth, 30, has been the Chair of the Executive Board of the Student Union in autumn 2025, and formerly worked on sectors of academic affairs, environment and development cooperation as a member of the board.
- I want to thank the Representative Council for the trust they have shown in me. Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to delve deeper into education policy and improving the status of students in society. We can’t emphasise enough how much the future of Finland lies in us students. I want to promote student well-being and future prospects in a way that benefits society as a whole, says Enorth.
Emilia is particularly focused on themes such as high-quality education, improving students’ housing conditions, and ensuring accessible education. Emilia has gained experience in education policy through student association work as well as participation in various university-level administrative groups focused on teaching and curriculum development at UEF. During their year in ISYY’s Executive Board, Emilia was appointed to SYL’s Development Cooperation Advisory Board, and they have also been involved in UEF’s work group for Sustainable Development and Responsibility.
In the municipal elections of spring 2025, Emilia was elected as the first deputy councilor in Joensuu and serves as an official member of the Building and Environment Committee.
– Students are a diverse group with different backgrounds and resources. The study years are a time for growth and finding direction – not just about survival. By investing in students, we are also building Finland’s future, and no one should be left behind. Above all, students need high-quality education, affordable housing, and accessible healthcare services. When students are given the necessary tools, they can graduate, innovate, and contribute to building a better society. Education is not where we should be making cuts. Finland needs bold and high-quality education policy and that should not cost us free education, states Enroth.
– I’m grateful for the trust and support of the Student Union for my goal to continue student advocacy on a national level. Next year I want us to make even more proactive and long-term student advocacy together with SYL, student unions and other stakeholders, Enroth continues.
Emilia is known in ISYY and student associations as a determined advocate for students' rights, who highlights issues in a constructive and consistent manner.
– I have known Emilia for only a year but I can still confidently say that she is not afraid of a challenge. Emilia is a courageous, determined and eager person, who is ready to fight for the better future for students. It is always great to see ISYY having a SYL candidate and I want to wish all the best for Emilia's campaign, says Ville-Pekka Timonen, Chair of ISYY’s Representative Council.
SYL represents Finnish university students at the national level and promotes their interests. SYL's board for 2026 will be elected at the General Assembly 14.-15.11.2025. ISYY is represented at the General Assembly with its own delegation.
