Call for applications: positions of trust at the University of Eastern Finland and the Finnish Student Health Service

Supplementary application to the Faculty Council of Science, Forestry and Technology

In autumn 2025, the Student Union announced the positions of student representatives for the University Board, the University Collegium and the Faculty Councils of the faculties. As not all the positions could be filled, ISYY announces three (3) deputy member positions for the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology. The position of trust will last until the end of 2027.

In accordance with section 27 of the Universities Act, the Faculty Council is a multi-member administrative body of a unit divided for the organization of research and teaching at the University, in which the personnel groups referred to in section 15.2 of the Universities Act, i.e. professors (5+5), other research and teaching staff plus other staff (5+5) and students (5+5) are represented.

According to section 9 of the University Regulations, the duties of the Faculty Council are

• to discuss the development measures of the faculty’s teaching, research and interaction as well as far-reaching solutions affecting the faculty 
• to process the starting points for the preparation of the faculty’s budget and the planning of its activities, as well as the financial realization reports and budget
• comment on the internal structure of the faculty to the extent that the rector decides on the matter
• to give a statement to the Rector on the proposal for the election of the Dean and to the Dean on the proposal for the election of the Vice Dean;
• decides on the establishment and discontinuation of the major subject within the framework of the educational responsibility
• decides on curricula and student admission criteria, unless otherwise provided in the regulations
• to grade dissertations
• process a proposal for the professor's field of duties and job description
• to process a proposal for the scope and task definition of the permanent positions of the faculty's teaching and research staff in the four-tiered career model and the tenuring path.
• decides on the granting of the title of docent
• confers an honorary doctorate

In addition, the Faculty Council and the Faculty Management Team meet at least twice a year to discuss the faculty’s development measures related to teaching, research and interaction, as well as other long-term solutions that affect the faculty’s operations.

A meeting fee is paid for participation in the meetings of the Faculty Council. In addition, after the term of office, a student who has worked in the Faculty Council may be granted a maximum of 2 ECTS for participating in administrative and working group work. If the student representative's native language is something other than Finnish, interpretation can be arranged for the meetings, and the documents can be translated into English.

Student representative to the Language Centre's Teaching Skills Assessment Committee

Note: This position requires Finnish skills

In autumn 2026, the Language Centre will fill the position of a university teacher of English. According to section 31 of the Regulations of Eastern Finland, university teachers are required to have good teaching skills. For assessing teaching skills, the Language Centre will establish an evaluation committee, to which ISYY is looking for a student member.

A member of the evaluation committee must familiarize themselves with the applicants' application documents, follow the teaching demonstrations and participate in the interviews that will be held on 13.11. Joensuu campus (remote participation is not possible) and participate in the preparation of the board's assessment of the applicants' teaching skills. The interviews will be held mainly in English, but there will also be questions in Finnish.

A member of the Assessment Committee is paid a meeting fee for participating in the assessment of teaching skills and interviews, both separately. In addition, a certificate of participation in the work of the Assessment Committee can be obtained if desired.

Student representative to the FSHS delegation for the term 2027–2028

Note: This position requires fluent Finnish skills

The Finnish Student Health Service acts as a service provider in accordance with the Act on Student Health Care (659/2019). According to its rules, the purpose of the Foundation is "to take care of the health care of students in universities and higher education institutions... as well as to support and promote scientific research that in one way or another serves this purpose."

The Foundation has a 30-member Delegation that appoints the Board of Foundation that manages the Foundation's affairs and to which the Foundation's Board is responsible for its tasks. The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) appoints 9 of the Foundation's members, and 7 of them are appointed on the proposal of the student unions. The student unions' representation shifts are in accordance with the regulations approved by SYL's General Assembly in 2018. In the cycle starting at the beginning of 2027, ISYY has the right to have a full representative in the Delegation, and a representative of the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä (JYY) acts as their deputy.

The FSHS Delegation meets regularly twice a year and at other times if the Chair of the Delegation, the Foundation's Board of Directors or 1/3 of the members of the Delegation so request.

• At the spring meeting of the Delegation, the financial statements of the past year will be discussed; the annual report of the Board of Directors and the measures caused by these will be decided. 
• The autumn meeting of the Delegation discusses the Foundation's action plan and budget for the coming year; electing the Chair and Vice Chair of the Delegation and appointing any members of the Foundation's Board of Directors. 

The delegation will meet in Helsinki. The delegation member will be reimbursed for travel expenses incurred during the meeting according to public transport. The working language of the delegation is Finnish, and meeting documents will not be translated into English and interpretation will not be provided for the meetings. 

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland is looking for two (2) candidates to become members of the FSHS Delegation for the term 2027–2028. According to the Delegation Election Regulations, ISYY must nominate two student members for the Delegation, who must represent different genders. The SYL Board decides which of ISYY's candidates will be elected to the Delegation.

The members of the delegation are expected to have a brisk approach to issues, a vision of the development of student health care and a readiness to participate in the meetings of the delegation. After the period, 1 ECTS can be granted for participating administrative and working group work. 

Application and eligibility

A person who has the right to complete a bachelor's or master's degree or a scientific postgraduate degree at the University of Eastern Finland, or who has the right to study as an alumni student at the University and has registered as present is eligible to apply for all of the above-mentioned positions of trust. A person who is employed by the University for more than 10% is not entitled to apply for the Faculty Council as a student group (University of Eastern Finland Election Regulations, Section 2).
