Independence Day Torch Parade in Joensuu on 6.12.2022

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) has the honor to invite all students to the Independence Day Torch Parade on 6.12.2022 in Joensuu. The Torch Parade is one of the oldest and most respected traditions of the Student Union.

The parade starts at the ISYY´s office, where students are asked to arrive at the latest at 3.45 pm. Before the Torch Parade we are serving warm glögg at the Haltia meeting room starting at 3 pm. The parade will depart at 4 pm and walk to the memorial grounds through Joensuu downtown.The ceremony at the memorial grounds will start at 4.30 pm. Itä-Suomen yliopiston kuoro Joy (Joy-choir) will perform at the memorial. A Speech will be given by Laura Kangasoja, the Board member of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland at the memorial grounds. We will also lay a wreath on the soldiers’ grave followed by the Finnish National Anthem.

The Parades are not political events or manifestations. The remembrance of the sacrifices made in the Finnish wars during the Second World War is very present during the Finnish Independence Day celebration. In parades we honour the sacrifices and celebrate the independence in Finland.

As every year, everyone who wants to join the Torch Parade is welcome to do so.

General Instructions for the Participants of the Parade

• Mulled wine is served at Haltia meeting room before the Parade, starting at 3 pm.
• The parade will leave at 4 pm heading towards the city center. The Finnish flag, the heralds, the ISYY flag and the Chairperson lead the parade. From 16:00 to 16:30 the parade will cross the Joensuu city center. 
• Please keep the torches always in an upwards position so the tar will not drip, and you will not get yourself or someone else burned. Also remember to keep a safe distance from others because of the fire.
• From 16:30 arrival at the cemetery. The ceremony will be carried out, starting with Itä-Suomen yliopiston kuoro Joy (Joy-choir) performance. Then we will hear a  speech by Laura Kangasoja, Board Member of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland. After the speech, a wreath is placed on the soldiers’ grave followed by the Finnish National Anthem accompanied by Joy-choir.
