Degree students: Remember to pay the Health Care Service fee to Kela!

Students attending a traditional university or a university of applied sciences must pay a healthcare fee to Kela. The fee must be paid for each term. Kela does not send a bill for the fee, so students must make sure to pay it on their own initiative. You can pay the healthcare fee via Kela’s e-service OmaKela (available in Finnish and Swedish only).

If you are completing a higher education degree and are registered as attending, you have the right to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS).

Read more about the payment of the healthcare fee and the due dates for payment: How to pay the healthcare fee in higher education.

  • The amount of the healthcare fee for students in higher education is adjusted annually. The 2024 rate of the student healthcare fee is EUR 36.80 per term.
  • For the spring term, the due date is 15 March provided that you have registered as attending by 31 January. If you register as attending for the spring term on or after 1 February, the due date is 31 July.
  • If you do not pay the healthcare fee by the due date, Kela will send you a reminder. If you pay the fee after the due date, Kela will charge a fixed late-payment fee of EUR 5.

NB! You do not have to pay the healthcare fee if you have social security coverage from another EU/EEA country, from Switzerland, or from Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Even if you do not have to pay the fee, you can still use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service. Howewer, be prepared to show your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) when visiting FSHS.

What is my Student Association?

Student Associations are independent, subject-specific associations. Student Associations gather together students who study the same subject, which allows for them to get to know their peers and work together in the field of student advocacy. It's a great way to meet new people and attend a variety of activities and events with people studying the same subject as you!

Each Student Association has their own overalls colour, they are listed in ISYY's student calendars! You can watch this Youtube video to learn more about the Finnish higher education overall tradition.

See the list of all Student Associations on ISYY's website to find out your own Student Association:
