HAPPY TUESDAY!

Vappu is right around the corner! But before next week's festivities of the biggest student celebration of the year, it's time to give feedback. This week is ISYY's Smiles and Complaints week, which means now is the perfect time to tell us what' deserves a smile and what could be improved at ISYY, UEF, FSHS and campus restaurants.

And once you get started with giving feedback, you can also fill in ISYY's member survey - all those who answer the survey have a chance to win a 50€ restaurant gift card!

Have a nice week!

Kind regards,
Salla

Give feedback on ISYY's Smiles and Complaints week!

Now it is time to give some feedback and some acknowledgement. What deserves a smile? What’s not working? Tell us during the Smiles and Complaints Week 22.-28.4.!

During the Smiles and Complaints Week, you can send feedback via ISYY to the Student Union, the University, FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service), campus restaurants, or any other party involved in students' life.

You can give us your feedback anonymously in both campuses by using Post-it notes or filling the electronic form. In Kuopio it is possible to give feedback through Post-it notes either in the Snellmania or in the Canthia lobby.

Get the ISYY lyre for your Student Cap!

Did you know that you can purchase a lyre of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) to your Student Cap to symbolise your own university community?

In Finland there is a tradition to wear the Student Cap during the Vappu (May Day) Celebrations, more specific on Vappu Eve and Vappu Day. The standard lyre that can be seen in most of the Finnish Student Caps is a symbol for the Matriculation Examination but also a symbol of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki. There is also own lyres to symbolise, e.g. the Vocational Upper Secondary Qualification or the International Baccalaureate.

Student Unions have their own lyres that symbolise the university community. A university student can purchase the lyre for their Student Cap to replace the old lyre.

There is still enough time to get yourself the ISYY lyre before Vappu Celebrations! A lyre costs 18€ and they are sold from ISYY offices, welcome!

Statement about the cuts to students’ welfare

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) and the local UAS Student Unions POKA and SAVOTTA published a joint statement last week about the decisions of the Finnish Government’s Fiscal Plan to make cuts to students’ welfare. The statement is published in Finnish on ISYY’s website on Friday 19 April.

We are afraid that these cuts will decrease the interest towards higher educational studies, increase the skills shortage in the labour market and make the mental health crisis even worse.

The cuts stated in the Fiscal Plan will cut from students’ welfare and affect mostly those who live alone. The decisions will affect especially the welfare of students during the summer, when students in Eastern Finland already have a hard time finding summer jobs from our area. The cuts will also put student housing companies (Elli and Kuopas) to a difficult position - making it even more difficult for them to answer to the constantly growing demand of student apartments, which in turn will lead to students’ housing expenses rising to an unreasonably high level.

In the statement we also expressed our worry about the development of Eastern Finland, which was not addressed in the Fiscal Plan. We, students of Eastern Finland, are worried how reasonably priced housing production, employment of graduating students and employee retention will be ensured in our area in the future.
