HAPPY TUESDAY!

Tomorrow, the 28th of February, is Kalevala's Day. Kalevala is the Finnish national epic compiled by Elias Lönnrot. Kalevala's Day is an official flag day in Finland and simultaneously the Day of Finnish culture. The Kalevala played an instrumental role in the developement of Finnish national identity and in the arts and Finnish language. It has been translated into over sixty languages and for example J.R.R.Tolkien mentions it as a source for some of his work.

You can read more about Kalevala from here.

Have a nice week!

Kind regards,
Elina

Name competition: Let's update our tradition together!

One of the traditions in ISYY's Vappu Celebration in Kuopio is to name two student actives as Vel'jmies (Velj'=brother, mies=man) and Siskotyttö (Sisko=sister, tyttö=girl). The named student actives will have an honorary task to do the capping of Velj'mies statue in ISYY's Vappu Eve's Pool Event. The traditions of the Pool Event go back 50 years.

The names come from the statues located at both ends of Kuopio Market Hall, Velj'mies and Siskotyttö. We want our traditions to be accessible for everyone, and the Student Union recognises that this tradition needs to be updated to be more inclusive and to reflect diversity.

We are now giving our members a chance to join us in updating the tradition by giving us suggestions for the new nominations with this name competition. Give us your suggestion by Sunday 24 March 2024 and win tickets for you and your friend to ISYY's traditonal Savo-Karjala Excursion to the campus of your choice. The winner will get to pick the city and bus before the ticket sale begins.

Student, change Europe! Vote!

The EU election programme and campaign of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) and the National Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (SAMOK) has begun last week. With the joint EU election programme and campaign, higher education students want to build a better future for higher education and young generations in Europe and encourage all students to vote. Main points of the campaign are:

  • Effortless student exchanges
  • Getting rid of unpaid internships
  • A union more focused on peacebuilding
