In a press release published on 17 September 2026, VR announced that it is revising the discounts available to pensioners and students on long-distance services. Going forward, quieter train services will offer the opportunity to travel at even lower prices. The aim is to provide customers with more affordable travel options and further strengthen the popularity of train travel.
VR’s standard discount is 30% for students and going forward, student discounts on less busy departures may be as high as 40% off the ticket price. Discounts on other departures will remain unchanged. The prices apply to single tickets on long-distance services. Eligible departures are marked with the "Extra %" label in the VR Matkalla app and on vr.fi.
The new discounts will take effect on journeys from 1 October 2026. Tickets will be available for purchase through all VR sales channels from 17 September.
