Wappu Radio brings together academic Vappu celebrations at two campuses

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) is going to carry out Vappu (May Day) with an entirely new concept. Students get to experience Vappu atmosphere remotely when the events are executed virtually and ISYY will launch its own Wappu Radio.

The radio program will be on ISYY’s YouTube channel on 22.4.–1.5.2020 with daily program between 2 pm and 10 pm. Radio broadcast will include e.g. podcasts, gameplay streaming, greetings from student organisations and clubs, ISYY’s bedtime stories and mental health moment.

Vappu celebrations begin with Vappu online sitsit party. There will be singing across campus boundaries, different distance activities and of course, good old sitsfest feeling. In addition, a popular Vappu tradition called Savo-Karjala Excursion will be held using a simulation game and you can participate in the excursion from your home sofa!

Vappu Eve’s traditions can be followed on Wappu Radio’s special broadcast

For the first time, it will be possible to follow Vappu traditions of both campus cities through a special broadcast on Wappu radio. The broadcast begins with capping of the Alkukivet stones in Joensuu around 4pm. Through the broadcast you can also follow Vappu parade as well as washing and capping of the Torso statue. Also, Saara Tenhovuori, Chairperson of Joensuu Campus Board will give a speech. 

After Joensuu’s broadcast we will move to Kuopio where the Veljmies statue will be washed and capped by Velj’mies (Brother Man) and Siskotyttö (Sister Girl). The special broadcast ends with a speech by Aino Peltonen, Chairperson of ISYY Executive Board, and traditional Professor immersing.
