HAPPY TUESDAY!

As all holidays, Easter has its own seasonal foods and sweet treats (read: only sweet treats). ‘Mämmi’ is one of the most exotic desserts for foreigners and sparks strong opinions even amongst Finns. Mämmi - a dark brown dessert that resembles grainy pudding (in other words, it looks like sludgy mud) - is made of rye flour and powdered malted rye. It was traditionally served in birch bark trays, which is why you can find it in a store in a cardboard box that has a birch print. Although made of rye flour, mämmi is very sweet and is traditionally served with either milk and sugar or heavy cream. A modern alternative to accompany mämmi would be vanilla cream! Yes, it does look shockingly unappetizing. But this is something you want to cross over from your “only in Finland'' -list, as mämmi is something you can’t find anywhere else. In addition to mämmi, Finnish Easter would not be complete without pasha and chocolate eggs!

Kind regards,

Salla
Coordinator of International Affairs in Joensuu (kv.joensuu(at)isyy.fi)
