HAPPY TUESDAY! 

Happy Pohjois-Karjala Pride week! This week is filled with events all over the city, and luckily summer seems to have finally arrived in Joensuu so it's a great time to enjoy outdoor activities as well. ISYY takes part in the Pride Parade and picnic on Saturday 20.5., keep reading this newsletter for more information!

Exceptions in office opening hours

Please notice that ISYY offices are open this week only from Monday to Wednesday because of the Ascension Day 18th May, that is a national holiday in Finland.

Last opening day of the spring semester is Thursday 15th June and ISYY offices will be back at your service after summer holidays on Tuesday 1st August.

ISYY is taking part in the Yle's Million Bags of Trash -campaign 24th May!

This spring, people all over Finland will collect one million bags of trash. In two months of cleaning, regions and cities, some organizations and communities, and Yle's public figures join forces with all Finns to collect one million bags of garbage from the environment.

ISYY is taking part in the campaign and challenge all students in Kuopio and Joensuu toi join with our staff and board members to collect trash bags, so that we can help reaching the goal of collecting one million garbage bags. We will collect trash bags on 24th May from 10 am to 11 am at campus area. ISYY is giving everyone bags and gloves. Please arrive to Lukema or Haltia by 10 am. The amount of collected bags is reported to ISYY and ISYY wil report the number of bags per campus to the system. 

 
 
     
 
 

ISYY Equipment Loan Service

Did you know that ISYY has a miscellaneous selection of different equipment to loan for sports and hobby activities? Whether you are going to play badminton, or Finnish yard game Mölkky with you friends, we have the equipment for you. 

ISYY’s Equipment Loan Service has gotten new terms of use to make loaning even easier for you. Come to the ISYY office, explore our assortment, and maybe try something completely new. The choice is yours!

 
 
 

What? A large selection of equipment for sports and hobby activities. We have e.g. snowshoes, badminton rackets and discs for frisbee golf. The complete list of available equipment and board games can be found on our website.

Who can loan? All ISYY members, SYKETTÄ users with valid stickers, and members of ESN Joensuu.

Price? Borrowing is free!

How long can I keep the equipment? The loan time is one (1) week. Return the equipment to the ISYY office.

How can I borrow? Come to the ISYY Joensuu or Kuopio office, choose the equipment you want to borrow, and fill in the electronic loan form by reading the QR code at the customer service desk.

Hey freshman 2022, collect an overall badge!

Congratulations, you have almost completed the first academic year! In the beginning of the academic year 2022-2023 ISYY organised a freshman bingo for those who started their studies at UEF in autumn 2022. The purpose of the bingo was to make ISYY services more familiar to the new freshmen. A great amount of students completed the bingo, but we still have some of the badges left. We are now giving away our Freshman 2022 badges to those who have started their studies in UEF during this academic year. Be fast since the badges are given on a first come, first served basis. The badges can be collected from ISYY offices during opening hours.

 

 
 
     
 
 

Remember to return your Survival Package before Friday 9th of June 12 (noon)

The semester is ending soon so here is a reminder - please return your Survival Package by Friday 9 June. You can return your package any day before the deadline within ISYY office opening hours, or on Friday 9 June between 8:30am and 12(noon) at the latest. Please note that we cannot extend the deadline - the Survival Packages need to be prepared for new incoming exchange students. 

You can return your survival package to the ISYY office (Yliopistokatu 7, Haltia building, 2nd floor) during opening hours.

When you return the package make sure that:
• all items listed in the pink slip are inside the box
• the items are clean
• the box is clean

We will give you back your 30€ deposit in cash when you return your survival package if the items are inside the box and intact. If there are broken items, the box is broken or items are dirty/no longer usable, the deposit will not be returned completely.

Donate your kitchenware to the Student Union

Is your exchange ending and want to get rid of unnecessary kitchenware you might have accumulated during your exchange? Or did you do a massive spring cleaning and wish to get rid of some bed sheets or towels?

You can donate your unwanted glasses, mugs, plates, kitchen utensils, pots and pans to the Student Union. We also take clean bed sheets and towels. We'll use them to make more survival packages for the next incoming exchange students. If you want to donate something to ISYY, you can bring the items to ISYY's offices during our opening hours. Please note that we accept only items that are still usable so nothing broken please.

In case you wish to donate your clothes (that are clean and in good condition), you can leave them in bags to UFF’s collection points. You can also leave clothes and other items to Kontti which is run by Finnish Red Cross. In Joensuu, Kontti located in Voimatie 10. 

 
 
     
 
 

Interest Advocacy at Your Service

How and when can you apply for the financial aid for students for summer months? What do you need to take into account when taking financial aid during summer? ISYY's Specialist for Interest Advocacy tells you! 

Interest Advocacy at Your Service is a post series, where ISYY's Specialists for Interest Advocacy are writing about Student Advocacy and giving you tips about themes that you might ancounter during your studies. Purpose of the post series is to help students to better understand their rights and responsibilities and also to remind them about ISYY's Interest Advocacy Services.

If you are able to do studies that lead to your degree, you can apply for financial aid also for the summer months, meaning June, July, August. The application must be done no later than during the month for which you want to apply the aid. ela will monitor the progress of your studies in October and after that you’ll receive a request to report your studies, if you don’t have enough credit points.

Remember, that you can always ask for help from the Student Union, if you face any challenges in your student life and you don't know what to do.

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members at the University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. You can see the prices for each sticker on the SYKETTÄ website and you can buy your sticker online or from the ISYY office. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes.

SYKETTÄ in summer 2023

SYKETTÄ moves also in the summer! All the services of the summer are put together on SYKETTÄ website. The page will be updated as summer services are confirmed. Enrollment on all summer classes and turns via sports calendar. You can participate in all summer activities with group exercise and ball sports sticker.

Summer sports calendar includes:

  • Activities of Laituri
  • Outdoor workouts instructed by physical activity counsellor Riina
  • Instructed cycling trips
  • Summer classes of JoenVoLi
  • Ball sports turns at Mehtimäki hall
  • Portti54 and Aurora gym are open throughout the summer

Tikkarinne gym is closed due to renovation between 17.5.-31.7.2023. Joensuu Areena gym is open according to the opening hours of the Joensuu Areena.

 

 
 
     
 
 

Sports turns application for student and staff groups, 2023-2024

UEF and Karelia UAS student and staff groups can apply for regular turn to season 2023-2024. Sports turns will run between September - May.  All users must have a valid sports sticker before the services can be used.

Each turn must have 1-2 responsible persons. The turn cannot be granted before it has at least one responsible person. Responsible persons have to check that everybody who will participate, has an up-to-date sports sticker. Also, responsible persons will take care of general order and report the number of participants and if necessary cancel the turn by contacting SYKETTÄ at least week before the date.

Application time ends on 28.5.2023 at 23:55 o'clock.

All the applicants will be called to a meeting where the turns are distributed.  The meeting time will be announced later.  After the meeting all applicants will be informed about the distributed sport turns.

Hello! In the previous Weekly Feed, I told you that this newsletter will include a link to a survey asking for feedback on the actions of the BRIDGES project and ISYY's wellbeing and communality work in general. The Pride week is here!

ISYY is co-organising Pride in Joensuu on Saturday 20.5. with North Karelia's Seta!

The Pride parade starts at 3 pm and ends at 4 pm in Ilosaari, where there is picnic, live music, a bouncy castle and, of course, great company. ISYY encourages all students to take part in Pride and wear their student overalls to form a rainbow. ISYY will have its own felt area at the park festival, bringing together all students. The first 100 students in the felt area will receive a fabulous ISYY Pride Hemmo overall badge as a memory.

Answer the "ISYY's wellbeing and communality work in the future" questionnaire

UEF and ISYY's BRIDGES project is coming to an end in December 2023 and we want to know what students want from ISYY's wellbeing and communality work in the future.

It takes about 5-10 minutes to answer.  Answering is anonymous, but if you would like to enter the raffle for a 50 € gift card for S Group, please leave your contact details at the end of the form. The application period for outgoing exchange during spring semester 2024 is open! During this application period, students may apply for Erasmus+, YUFE/Erasmus+, Nordlys or bilateral exchange.

The application period ends on May 31 at 3 pm sharp – make sure you submit your application in time!

Joensuu and Kuopio campus libraries are open on Wednesday 17th May 8am–3pm (Customer service 10am–3pm).

Nyyti’s Chat is a place for sharing thoughts, feelings and experiences. Chats will cover subjects surrounding issues that affect student’s daily lives. This group chat is meant for all students over the age of 18. Chat is also anonymous and free of charge. There will always be Nyyti’s volunteers or employees at the chat with you. Always remember to behave according to the priciples for a safer space.

Joensuun Maila baseball team plays against Koskenkorvan Urheilijat in the top Finnish baseball league game on May 26th at 6pm in Bolt stadium in Joensuu

As the host of the evening, CPU Oy offers free entrance to all students!

Show your valid student card and claim a free ticket at the Bolton stadium ticket office before the game or at the Joensuun Maila office in advance. ( Address: Hiiskoskentie 9, 80100 Joensuu, opening hours Mon - Fri 10-15).

Pohjois-Karjala Pride week 15.5.-21.5.2023

Pohjois-Karjala pride takes over the province with the colours of rainbow again 15–21st of May! Pride week is filled with events all over Joensuu, take a look at the full programme from the link below. Pride would not be complete without the Pride Parade and Pride party in the park afterwards. The parade starts at 3pm from the yard of art museum Onni (Kirkkokatu 23), and ends in Ilosaari. If you attend with small children or pets, you can join the silent block in the back of the parade. We are looking for you! AEGEE Joensuu and Snowchange Cooperative are organizing a plastic clean-up in collaboration with Green Journey in the Linnunsuo peat land. 

When: 26th of May, starting between 10-11 am (exact time tbc) 
Where: Linnunsuo peat land.

Do you want to meet new people? Have you been feeling a bit lonely, or are you finding it hard to find a community? Information about Weekly Feed

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself. 

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.

Weekly Feed is published on Tuesdays during the academic year, with the exception of holidays and a few other days. If you do not want to receive the newsletter anymore, you can unsubscribe the letter via the link (Click here to unsubscribe) located on the bottom of the letter.
