HAPPY TUESDAY!

Welcome back to the UEF and ISYY! I hope you have enjoyed the summer and have now recharged your batteries to face the autumn and the beginning of a new semester.

In the beginning of September we will kick-off the new academic year!! 

And what does that mean?

Campus Happening and City Orienteering is an event, that starts the academic year in the University of Eastern Finland. The event is held on the same date with the UEF Opening Ceremony, 8th September 2022. The event will be held on both campuses at the same time.

 
 
 

Campus Happening and City Orienteering (8.9)

The Campus Happening begins right after the Opening Ceremony and it gathers new and continuing students and also UEF Staff together to the campus area. Due to the Pandemic the event has not been held after the autumn 2019. The Campus Happening will act also as a kick-off event for the City Orienteering.

City Orienteering is organised especially for the new students. Teams will go around the campus city and complete fun tasks at the orienteering points. The students will get to know each other but also the campus city. You will meet e.g. student associations and ISYY Clubs at the orienteering points!

You will hear more about the event very soon!

New and familiar faces at the ISYY office!

Antti Natunen has started as ISYY's new Secretary General on 1st of August. Also, ISYY’s Specialist for Organisational Affairs, Liisa, has been back at our Kuopio office since the beginning of August. You will meet Liisa e.g. if you come to get your term or SYKETTÄ-sticker and you can contact Liisa also, if you have questions considering student associations or ISYY Clubs.

ESN Joensuu - ISYY's international club

ESN Joensuu is a local section of ESN International, also known as the International Club of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). ESN Joensuu is for anyone and everyone who lives in Joensuu and likes to hang out with people from around the world - both Finnish and international students are very welcome to join us! If you are a member of ISYY, you are automatically also a member of ESN Joensuu. 

The most important task of the ESN Joensuu is to introduce Finnish culture and lifestyle to international students and to give Finnish students an opportunity to gain international experiences in Joensuu by arranging diverse events and activities. In addition, ESN Joensuu is active in promoting intercultural understanding on campus and in Joensuu. We believe in fun, friendship and unity in diversity! Anyone can become active in ESN Joensuu and we really hope you do by either coming along to our events or by joining one of the open meetings.

Greetings from the Bridges coordinator!

Hello student! It's me, the BRIDGES project coordinator Riina. I hope your summer went well! The new academic year is already around the corner and because of that, the BRIDGES news section is also being renewed: from now on I will write a short greeting like this at the beginning. First of all, thank you very much for the wishes regarding the fall events. June was largely spent planning them and I'm looking forward to what's to come. Have a relaxing end of summer and I hope to see you at the events!

The BRIDGES continue!

In ISYY we are glad to say that with the project's continued funding, the BRIDGES project will also continue in the academic year 2022–2023. This means that ISYY will pursue events and activities that promote student wellbeing and community spirit.

All activities of the project are free of charge and open to all students of the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu and Kuopio. You are always welcome to the BRIDGES events alone, because there you don't have to be alone.

A day trip to New Valamo (3.9)

The first BRIDGES event of autumn is a day trip to New Valamo monastery on Saturday 3rd of September! 

Transports leave from both campuses in Kuopio and Joensuu in the morning. After arriving, we will go on an hour-long guided tour (Finnish), after which we will head for lunch. After lunch it is possible to go outside on your own in the surroundings of Valamo, visit a souvenir shop or get to know the monastery's exhibitions. Transportations back to the campuses leaves at 4 pm.

The event is open to all UEF students. Register in Kide.app between 16th to 26th of August. Participation is free, but a 10 € deposit + 0.5 € service fee must be paid upon registration. The deposit will be returned after participating in the event.

Join in the Hobby Buddy service!

The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. By filling the Hobby Buddy application, we are looking for a suitable buddy for you!

There are different hobbies - you can search for a buddy for a coffee or movie company. You can read about the searched hobbies from ISYY’s websites and fill out the application.

We’ll get in touch when the right buddy is found. We read applications and combine them together once a week.

SYKETTÄ Joensuu

SYKETTÄ includes sport services for the students and staff members at the University of Eastern Finland and Karelia University of Applied Sciences. You can see the prices for each sticker on the SYKETTÄ website and you can buy your sticker online or from the ISYY office. Remember to create a user account with your uef email before you try to buy a sticker or enroll to classes. Physical stickers are available to purchase at the ISYY office. Spring 2022 stickers are valid until 31.8.2022. Please follow our hygiene and safety instructions

The autumn semester starts officially 1.9, but the SYKETTÄ calendar is published 17.8.2022 so you can take a look before purchasing the SYKETTÄ membership sticker!

Opening ceremony of the Academic Year 2022-2023

The Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year 2022–2023 will be held on Kuopio campus on Thursday, 8 September 2022, at 1.15 p.m. in the Great Lecture Hall, Snellmania building. Welcome!

Register to Language Centre courses!

If the course starts before 11.9.2022, registration ends two workdays before the course starts. If the course begins on 12.9.2022 or later in the first period, registration ends on Thu 8 September. For courses in the second period, registration ends 10 days before the course starts.

  • For degree students (Bachelor, Master and PhD), we offer degree courses in English and in Finnish as well as optional courses.
  • For exchange students, we offer the courses Finnish 1A and Chinese 1. Exchange students can join other Finnish courses if there is room in the group. 
  • If you are new to Finnish language, start with our beginner’s course, Finnish 1A. Finnish 1A is a self-study module. Registration is open throughout the academic year, and you can start this course as soon as you register in Peppi.
 
 
 

Students register for degree courses in Peppi through their personal study plan (PSP). Students may also register for courses that are not included in their PSP by searching these courses in Peppi.

NB! In case you have started your studies before Autumn 2022 and the new curriculum 2022–2025, please remember to add the new equivalent courses to your personal study plan (PSP).

Degree student - remember to pay the FSHS fee!

You can use FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service) services in the spring semester if you are studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and you have registered as an attending student at the UEF.

Degree students pay the university student's health care fee to Kela. Note that Kela won't send you an invoice! The amount for the autumn semester is 35.80 €. Read more about the payment and how to pay it via the link below.

Joen Yö - city festival (19.8.)

Joen Yö - City festival ends the eventful summer as usual. The main themes of Joen Yö in 2022 are inclusion and tolerance. The Joen Yö event highlights Joensuu's artists of art and culture, Joensuu's diverse field of associations and organizations, and the city's art and culture institutions.

Market Stage - Torilava has a program between 15:00 and 22:00. Along Kävelykatu (Kauppakatu) a traditional Organization Boulevard – Järjestöbulevardi will be built, and a program aimed especially for the children, will be implemented in Vapaudenpuisto.

During Joen Yö, you can also get free access to museums, Botania botanical garden and many other places. There are free concerts as well!

New courses in career & job seeking skills

The UEF Career Services offers courses on career planning and job seeking. They are open to all bachelor’s and master’s degree students. Starting from spring 2023, each 1-ECTS course will be available in English twice a year. This academic year, they will belaunched as follows:

“Keys to Well-being – 5 Steps towards Future Work Skills” online trainings are designed to improve self-management skills, which are increasingly important in the changing world of work and study. Transformation of work requires new skills and competences: time and self-management skills, resilience and adaptability, collaboration skills, new ways of thinking, taking care of well-being and finding meaning in our work.

The online trainings consist of short videos as well as in-depth trainings. The trainings can be accessed flexibly at any time that suits you. They are free of charge to UEF staff and students, and they are available until January 31, 2023. This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself. 

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.
