HAPPY TUESDAY!

Most Halloween celebrations are aready behind us but Finns also celebrate All Saints' Day during this time of the year. All Saints' Day is always celebrated on a Saturday between 31.10 - 6.11, which means that this year it lands on 5th November. All Saints’ Day is most commonly celebrated by remembering our loved ones who have been deceased by lighting candles and visiting graveyards.

Remember to attach lights to your bicycle if you haven't already since the evenings are getting dark quickly. When riding at dusk or in the dark, the Finnish law requires that a bicycle has a white or light yellow headlight and a red rear light. If you don't have these, you can be fined by the police. If you're walking, you can increase your visibility in the dark by wearing a reflector or a reflector vest. Read more about using reflectors on Finnish Road Safety Council's website here

Have a nice week!

Kind regards,

Salla / kv.joensuu@isyy.fi

ISYYs sustainable development week (7-13.11.)

How do companies take the climate, the environment and human rights into consideration in their activities? Do stores offer responsibly produced clothing? How about laptops or phones?

Come and learn more about responsible consumption and get to know other students interested in the subject!

ISYY is taking part in the sustainable development week, co-organised with the National Union of Students in Finland (SYL), from 7th to 13th November (week 45). In the program there will be a workshop held by Eetti ry about corporate responsibility (in Finnish) and online discussion (in English) held by Fairtrade together with students from Åbo Akademi Studentkår ÅAS.

On top of the events organised together with SYL, ISYY’s BRIDGES project will arrange a trip to School for Self Suffeciency in Nurmes. In the academy they hold courses to teach people how to live life completely in a self-sustaining way! During the trip you will learn how the academy operates and how you can live more self-sustaining by yourself. You can attend this trip from both campuses. NB! Student2Student peer counsellors are here for you

UEF wants to take care of its students’ well-being and is offering its students the opportunity to have counselling with a trained peer counsellor. If you are an international degree student or an exchange student, you will receive an SMS from UEF during the month of November. The messages will be sent out gradually over the course of the month. If you respond to the message, a peer counsellor will contact you by telephone. You can discuss anything related to your studies and well-being. If you are not in a convenient place to talk when the peer counsellor phones you, you can also schedule another appointment to be held at a better time. In your response to the SMS, you can include the dates and hours when you would like to be called. Responding to the SMS is toll-free.

You can also reach UEF’s Student2Student peer counsellors by calling +358 29 445 8580 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 2pm and 5pm. The online livechat in Kamu is open during those hours too. You can also leave a callback request at any time, and a peer counsellor will call you when the service is open.

Peer counsellors?

Peer counsellors at UEF are master’s degree students in social sciences and psychology, who have been selected and trained for their job. They work under the supervision of UEF’s study psychologists and campus pastors. The aim of peer counselling is to provide high-quality but easy-access counselling for students. The foundation of peer counselling is in offering non-judgmental, compassionate, and open-minded support and a way forward in your unique situation. Discussions with peer counsellors are voluntary, confidential, and free of charge. When you call, your phone number is visible to the peer counsellor, but the chat offers the option of full anonymity. When necessary, peer counsellors can help you find further support for your situation or the answer to a question on your mind. No concern is too small or too big to be shared with a peer counsellor.

What kind of help do peer counsellors offer?

  • Support and tips for study techniques and study routine
  • Tools for stress management
  • Support for loneliness
  • Support for anxiety
  • Information about services provided by the university and campus cities
  • Helping you find suitable freetime activities in your city
  • Supporting you when you feel home-sick or are struggling to adapt to a new culture
  • Support for relationship issues
