HAPPY TUESDAY!

The roads are starting to freeze slowly and become slippery. Here are some useful tips for staying upright on icy roads:

  • Check to see if the soles of your shoes are suitable for walking on slippery surfaces. The soles should not be completely flat and hard, but rather have a rubbery feel with some texture
  • If you don’t have winter-ready shoes, you can purchase slip-on shoe spikes to attach on your shoes. The studs should not be worn indoors since they scratch the floors, so remember to take them off your shoes when you go to the supermarket, for example.
  • Now that you have proper footwear, it’s time to learn to walk like a penguin! In order to avoid falling down on icy roads, lean forwards and keep your weight on the foot you’re putting forward. If this works for penguins with slippery feet, it works for humans as well!
  • NB! Black ice is a thing in Finland - the roads can be super slippery even though they don’t look icy (you can still see the asphalt through the ice, hence the name). You can read more here!

Have a nice week!

Kind regards,

Salla / Coordinator of International Affairs in Joensuu

ISYY's Independence Day Torch parade in Joensuu 6.12.2022

Independence Day (Itsenäisyyspäivä) in Finland is held on the 6th of December to celebrate Finland's declaration of independence from Russia in 1917. That makes Finland 105 years old in 2022!

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) has the honor to invite all students to the Independence Day Torch Parade on 6.12.2022 in Joensuu. The Torch Parade is one of the oldest and most respected traditions of the Student Union. The parade starts at the ISYY´s office, where students are asked to arrive at the latest at 3.45 pm. Before the Torch Parade we are serving warm glögg at the Haltia meeting room starting at 3 pm. The parade will depart at 4 pm and walk to the memorial grounds through Joensuu downtown. The ceremony at the memorial grounds will start at 4.30 pm.

Read more about the parade on ISYY's website and check out the Facebook event.

Independence Day celebrations is Finland

As Finland is quite a young country, some of the war veterans are still alive and most of the celebrations are related to paying respects to them and to those who were lost during the war. Therefore there is an annual televised military parade of the Finnish Defence Forces and student torch parades all around Finland where they visit graveyards to place wreaths on war graves. ISYY also organises a student torch parade every year in Kuopio and Joensuu. In the parades, we celebrate the independence of Finland which gives us freedom to study, come together and be who we want to be. In the Torch Parades, we also want to commemorate the part students played in the creation of the independent Finnish state. The Torches bring light to the dark December night. You are warmly welcome to join the Parade as a participant or a spectator this year!

The highlight of the day has traditionally been watching the broadcast of the glamorous Presidential Independence Day reception (Linnanjuhlat)! The reception has been an annual tradition since 1919. Roughly 2000 guests receive an invitation to the event, such as members of the government and parliament of Finland, war veterans, diplomats, and other public figures and skilled individuals the President chooses to invite.

In this feedback survey, you will be able to tell from your point of view on Peppi’s deployment process, how Peppi’s use is now going and what development needs you have to Peppi or its related services.

The survey for UEF students is open between 24 November and 15 December 2022. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete.

The operations are developed based on feedback. UEF reaches out to international students via SMS to offer support for studies and well-being

UEF wants to take care of its students’ well-being and is offering its students the opportunity to have counselling with a trained peer counsellor. If you are an international degree student or an exchange student, you will receive an SMS from UEF during the month of November. The messages will be sent out gradually over the course of the month. If you respond to the message, a peer counsellor will contact you by telephone. You can discuss anything related to your studies and well-being. If you are not in a convenient place to talk when the peer counsellor phones you, you can also schedule another appointment to be held at a better time. In your response to the SMS, you can include the dates and hours when you would like to be called. Responding to the SMS is toll-free.

You can also reach UEF’s Student2Student peer counsellors by calling +358 29 445 8580 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 2pm and 5pm. The online livechat in Kamu is open during those hours too. You can also leave a callback request at any time, and a peer counsellor will call you when the service is open.

Peer counsellors?

Peer counsellors at UEF are master’s degree students in social sciences and psychology, who have been selected and trained for their job. They work under the supervision of UEF’s study psychologists and campus pastors. The aim of peer counselling is to provide high-quality but easy-access counselling for students. The foundation of peer counselling is in offering non-judgmental, compassionate, and open-minded support and a way forward in your unique situation. Discussions with peer counsellors are voluntary, confidential, and free of charge. When you call, your phone number is visible to the peer counsellor, but the chat offers the option of full anonymity. When necessary, peer counsellors can help you find further support for your situation or the answer to a question on your mind. No concern is too small or too big to be shared with a peer counsellor.

What kind of help do peer counsellors offer?

  • Support and tips for study techniques and study routine
  • Tools for stress management
  • Support for loneliness
  • Support for anxiety
  • Information about services provided by the university and campus cities
  • Helping you find suitable freetime activities in your city
  • Supporting you when you feel home-sick or are struggling to adapt to a new culture
  • Support for relationship issues

Remember to attach lights to your bicycle!

As the evenings are getting dark, remember to wear reflectors and start using lights on your bicycle. When riding at dusk or in the dark, the Finnish law requires that a bicycle has a white or light yellow headlight and a red rear light. If you don't have these, you can be fined by the police. You can increase your visibility in the dark by wearing a reflector tag or a reflector vest.
