HAPPY TUESDAY!

This Sunday is Palm Sunday, which means that Easter is around the corner! On Palm Sunday (2.4), you might see many children walking around the neighbourhood from door to door dressed as little witches carrying decorated willow twigs and baskets. This tradition - virpominen - vaguely resembles the American Halloween tradition of trick or treating, as the children are offered candy or chocolate eggs when they visit your doorstep.  These little witches say a short spell/rhyme wishing you a healthy year, then offer you the willow twig decorated with colourful feathers and crepe paper strips as a blessing to your house that keeps evil spirits away - in exchange for sweet treats. Read more about Finnish Easter here.

Saturday 1 April is also April Fools' Day, so beware of tricksters.

Have a nice week!

Kind regards,
Elina

Experience Finnish Vappu Celebration in Savo-Karjala Excursion

Savo-Karjala Excursion is one of the most famous and popular May Day celebration traditions of the Student Union (ISYY). The first Savo-Karjala Excursion was organised in 1990. The event is held every year in Joensuu and Kuopio on 29th April despite the day of the week.

During the Savo-Karjala Excursion, students circle around Eastern Finland (North Savo and North Karelia regions) on buses on a predetermined route, which will remain a secret until the buses start their journey, and enjoy refreshments in different bars and restaurants along the way. You can now see the names and associations of the leaders of each bus from ISYY's website and Kide.app.

To attend the event, it is not required that you can speak Finnish. The most important thing is that you and your friends have fun and you can keep up with the schedule of the bus. If there are English speaking people in the buses, we'll ask the leaders of to bus to give all the important information about the schedule in English.

Ticket sales start on Tuesday, April 4th at 8:00 am at ISYY office (in Studentia building, C entrance, Yliopistonranta 3). The remaining tickets, if there are any, will go on sale to Kide.app on the same day at 11:00 am. The ticket price is 20 €.

Use your right to vote on the National Election Day 2nd April!

The actual Election Day of the Finnish Parliamentary Elections is finally here on this week's Sunday 2 April. If you did not use your right to vote, do that on Sunday. Every citizen of Finland, who has turned 18 no later than on 2nd April has a right to vote despite the domicile.

The voting on the Election Day differs form the Advance Voting, as you must vote in the polling station named for you according to your home address. The polling station named for you can be found from the voting right card that has been sent to you either by mail or electronically or you can search the polling station via Polling Station Service of the Finnish Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV)

In these Elections, it is very important that students use their right to vote, so that important themes for students will be brought to the table during the next Parliamentary Period.
