HAPPY TUESDAY!

The ultimate student holiday is here! It’s time to grab your overalls (and your high school graduation cap) and head for a May Day -themed picnic among other festive students. May Day (1st May) is usually considered as a holiday celebrating workers, but in Finland it is truly taken over by higher education students with their carnival traditions.

30th April is the day for student celebrations - there’s usually a student cavalcade and traffic is closed so students can parade through the city waving student organisation flags and sporting their student organisation overalls and high school graduation caps.

The traditional vappu picnic feast includes delicacies such as a sugar-coated doughnut (munkki) and funnel cake (tippaleipä), which is coated with powdered sugar. To wash all the sugar down Finns usually drink sima - a sweet, sparkling low-alcoholic beverage which is made by fermenting honey, sugar, water and lemon. Traditional sima also includes a few raisins.

Read more about vappu here and here.

Have a fun May Day! / Hauskaa vappua!

Kind regards,
Elina

ISYY's Vappu (May Day) Eve programme is now published!

Vappu is the biggest celebration of the year for Finnish students. On Vappu Eve, 30th April, you can attend ISYY's Vappu traditions on both campuses. ISYY gathers all university students to celebrate Vappu together wit our old traditions.

In Kuopio the traditions include the Cleaning of the Tooth organised by Dentina ry, the Rite of the Scholastic Passage that will be performed on campus and later the Pool Event at the Kuopio Market Square. At the Market Square we'll wash and cap the Velj'mies statue, nominate the Siskotyttö and the Velj'mies of the year, immerse the professor at the pool of Velj'mies statue and we'll hear the Vappu speeches of the Student Union and Student Associations. Read more from the ISYY website.

Check out the Vappu Events in the campus city!

The highlight of the whole academic year, Vappu (May Day), will bring life to Kuopio by introducing a variety of events organised by ISYY and student associations.

Traditionally, the students’ Vappu celebrations begin as early as in the middle of April and will culminate in the Rite of Scholastic Passage and Pool Event at the Kuopio Market Square organised by ISYY.

ISYY has created a list of Student Vappu events for both campus cities. Check out the event list of Kuopio and prepare yourself for the Vappu spirit!

Events on the lists are organised by ISYY, Student Associations and Clubs. Didn't see your event on the list? Send the information for us with this form that can be found from the ISYY website and we'll add it in. See you at the events!

Get the ISYY lyre for your Student Cap!

Did you know that you can purchase a lyre of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) to your Student Cap to symbolise your own university community?

In Finland there is a tradition to wear the Student Cap during the Vappu (May Day) Celebrations, more specific on Vappu Eve and Vappu Day. The standard lyre that can be seen in most of the Finnish Student Caps is a symbol for the Mariculation Examination but also a symbol of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki. There is also own lyres to symbolise, e.g. the Vocational Upper Secondary Qualification or the International Baccalaureate.

Student Unions have their own lyres that symbolises the university community. A university student can purchase the lyre for their Student Cap to replace the old lyre.

There is still enough time to get yourself the ISYY lyre before Vappu Celebrations! A lyre costs 17€ and they are sold from ISYY offices, welcome!

Exercise is important for students because it

  1. improves sleep quality 😴
  2. improves concentration 🧘‍♀️
  3. improves memory 🧠
  4. improves mental health 😊

Exercise helps reduce harmful long-term stress that impairs learning and lowers your mood. Exercise also helps with anxiety and depression.

The free physical activity counselling service for students at UEF will help you find your own way of moving and make exercise a regular part of your everyday life. You can reach our physical activity counsellor Saija by email: saija.pohjanvirta@edu.savonia.fi or on 044 7856832.
