This year, ISYY’s working life event is divided into four different days throughout the year 2022. The days will cover different topics from job hunting to skills needed in working life and we will have speakers as well as organise workshops. Welcome to ISYY’s first working life themed day of 2022 on 23 February starting from 10.15 am!

The theme of the English lectures is how to get started if you wish to work in Finland while you study or after you have graduated. We also have a lecture on how to write a cover letter for your job application. The event is held online and you can follow the programme on ISYY’s Youtube channel. Do you have something in mind to ask about advocacy? Join ISYY’s interest advocacy coffee breaks!

The interest advocacy coffee breaks are spaces for open discussion, where you can hear about news related to interest advocacy and share your own. Present are also the executive board members responsible for educational and social politics as well as ISYY’s own interest advocacy experts. Spring 2022 we start through Discord due to the ongoing pandemic.

The next coffee break takes place on Monday 22.2. at 15-17 on ISYY Discord! In the future coffee breaks will be held always third monday of the month!

Vappu never ends and here we go again!

Are you interested in organising and fulfilling ISYY’s May Day traditions or even developing something completely new? If you are interested in organising events, and you want to be part of making the most epic student May Day ever in Joensuu or Kuopio, this team is for you! Previous experience with ISYY is not required.

We are looking for committed team members from both campuses. Committed team members will get tickets for Savo-Karjala excursion for free! The term of the team is 1.3.2022-15.5.2022. Leave your application by 20.2.2022.

May Day-team is expected to arrange certain May Day traditions, but there is also room for new ideas. Both campuses have traditional and epic Sawo-Karjala-excursion. In Joensuu, the traditions include May Day parade and Student Union’s speech. In Kuopio, the traditions include washing of the Tooth statue at Lukema, Ordination to sophistication, May Day event by the market square, where the Velj’mies statue is washed and gets a graduation cap.

ISYY’s Executive Board member Sonja Soinne operates as the team’s contact person the whole time of the team’s term.

What is BRIDGES?

The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote well-being of students and prevent exclusion. The project has several subcontractors, one of which is ISYY. The aim of the BRIDGES project is to reduce the experience of loneliness and to prevent exclusion through activities that increase students' community and well-being.

Hobby Buddies we're looking for

The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. By filling the Hobby Buddy application, we look for a suitable buddy for you!

There are different kinds of hobbies - e.g. you can search for a buddy for a coffee or movie company. Right now there are students in Kuopio currently looking for hobby buddies to play board games, volleyball, salsa dancing, role-playing D&D and ice swimming.

We’ll get in touch when the right buddy is found. We read applications and combine them together once a week, usually on Fridays.

Four upcoming courses

  • Swimming technique course II is coming 21.2.!

You must have basic swimming skills to participate in the course. In this course we will practice for example basics of freestyle and backstroke swimming. Enroll via Sports Calendar here.

 

 
 
 
  • Basics of the Olympic weightlifting course is coming up!

This course is suitable for beginners and those who want to rehearse safe lifting techniques. The course takes place for two days and it's held from Saturday 26th of February at 13.30–15.00pm to Sunday 27th of February at 11.00–13.00pm. On Saturday, the focus is on Jerk and on Sunday on Snatch technique.

With a valid SYKETTÄ-sticker the course fee is only 49 euros! Enroll for this course via SYKETTÄ Sports Calendar on 19.2. at the latest.

  • A beginner course for ITF Taekwon-Do

Taekwon-Do is a korean martial art, which is known especially for its high and impressive kicking techniques. In the ITF-style of Taekwon-Do, also the punching techniques have a huge role. However, Taekwon-Do is not all about just sparring, but it includes also for example patterns, self defense and power breaking. Taekwon-Do is a great sport for improving power, speed and endurance, as well as flexibility and coordination

Beginner course trainings will be twice a week at Studentia: Tuesday 5-7pm and Thursday 3-5 pm.

  • Introduction to circus weekend course 19.-20.3.

Kuopion Sirkus and the Sirke project are offering two free courses for people ages 15 to 26 on 19-20 March. Saturday is 11am - 1.30pm and Sunday 4pm - 6.30pm

Circus is a versatile hobby in which everyone can find something suitable for them and get to know their own strengths. In the courses you will get to experience what circus is like as a hobby, and learn about the various different disciplines in circus. The courses are suitable for beginners as well as for people who have experience in different forms of sport/exercise; everyone gets to participate at their own level. Come with an open mind and the will to learn something new and you will have a great time! You can also participate in the course if you have previous experience in circus.

Free admission and free bus transportation for students to Tahko Ski Lift Pitch on Wednesday 6th of April!

Tahko Ski Lift Pitch, the most significant startup company event in the Kuopio area, will be held in Tahko on Wed-Thu 6.-7. of April! At the event, startup entrepreneurs will compete with their business ideas in ski lifts and try to convince investors of their business idea. UEF is one of the main partners of the event, so there will be free admission for students and a free bus transfer on Wednesday, April 6th!

There will also be a competition for students called Student Track where students can present their business ideas and compete with each other. The best idea will be rewarded with a EUR 500 gift card to Gigantti.

The departure of Kuopio's bus ride is on Wednesday 6th of April at 8 am from Microkatu 1 and the return ride from Tahko leaves at 5:30 pm and takes you to Microkatu 1. A bus ride from Joensuu will be arranged if at least about 10 people register. Departure from the Joensuu campus is at 7 am and bus leaves Tahko at 5:30 pm.

Meals are not included in the free student ticket, but you can eat on site e.g., at the Sokos Hotel Ski Buffet for € 9.90 by presenting the Tahko Ski Lift Pitch student pass. Event passes are distributed either on the bus or on site.

Student Barometer collects information on studies and student life

Student Barometer is a survey aimed at students in higher education. Its purpose is to collect information on students’ experiences and opinions of their studies, student life, and everyday life. Student Barometer is repeated data collection carried out by the Research Foundation for Studies and Education Otus sr.

Information produced by Student Barometer is used in work to develop student wellbeing, student activities, the quality of teaching, higher education internships, studies and reports on working life and living, and educational institutions. Participation in the study is voluntary. By responding to the survey, you are participating in discussions about topics that affect student life!

ESN KISA organises recreational activities for international and Finnish students. These activities include excursions, parties, game nights, cultural exchange and other events. Welcome to ITF Taekwon-Do's beginner course!

Our club (Itä-Suomen yliopiston Taekwon-Do Kuopio) will arrange a beginner course for ITF Taekwon-Do this spring. The course is open for all the students and staff members of the University of Eastern Finland and Savonia-polytechnic. Previous experience in sports or martial arts is not required, the course is suitable for both beginners and experienced athletes. The course will start on Tuesday 15.2.2022 at 5 pm and will end later in spring to the yellow belt grading test.

Learn Finnish at Kompassi

Would you like to learn Finnish outside the univeristy? Kompassi in the city centre (Kauppakatu 40-42) offers non-stop Finnish language courses three days in a week. These courses are open and free for all and they are held at Kompassi. You do not need to register or sign-up for these courses. Kompassi also offers free Finnish speaking and reading courses.

In addition to teaching Finnish, Kompassi's volunteers organise different kinds of hobby opportunities and events. Check them out here.

We are inviting you to take part in the KvarkenSat Innovation Challenge 2022 on Sustainable Forestry! Think, innovate and test your solutions and win prizes!

The hackathon is organized on March 18-20, 2022. Before the hackathon, a pre-hack webinar introducing the challenges and the theme mentors will be held on February 15th! You can register here for the webinar.

We are inviting students from all disciplines to join! We'll be searching for ideas and solutions which combine existing knowledge with the newly available space-based and modeled data. Mentors will introduce in more detail the four challenge themes and the related context, and will support you during the hackathon.
