HAPPY TUESDAY!

  • ISYY's first working life event of 2022 is tomorrow! Lectures in English start at 1.15 pm.  You can see the schedule below or on ISYY's website. You can follow the lectures on ISYY's YouTube channel.
  • ESN KISA has a general meeting on 28.2. at 6pm at Lukema. They also have an event at a trampoline park this Sunday and a Koli trip is coming up in March. You can read the details of the events on their Instagram account.

Come and listen about working in Finland at ISYY’s working life event!

Welcome to ISYY’s first working life themed day of 2022 on 23 February starting from 10.15 am!

The theme of the English lectures is how to get started if you wish to work in Finland while you study or after you have graduated. We also have a lecture on how to write a cover letter for your job application. The event is held online and you can follow the programme on ISYY’s Youtube channel. Apply for an Internationalisation Grant for Your Organisation or Club!

ISYY is giving out grants for student associations, campus organisations and ISYY clubs for international activities! The grant is for the promotion of events and projects that further internationalisation. Examples of such projects can be new means that include international students in student associations, language exchange or how to get international and Finnish students to interact more. Be creative!

We are looking for activities that: promote internationalisation and international affairs, are repeatable and reproducible by other associations and clubs, are sustainable long-term, are environmentally friendly, innovative and creative, and take both Degree students and exchange students into account. Interdisciplinary and cooperative activities between different associations and clubs is also considered an advantage.

The two best applications will receive a grant of 400 €. The application period is 21.2-21.3.2022. Applications must be left online via the application form.

Representative Council meeting 1/2022

The Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) will hold its first meeting of 2022 on Thursday the 24th of February in rooms M100 (Joensuu) and SN200 (Kuopio) at 5 pm. In the meeting, the Representative Council will, among other things, elect students to the Representative Council Committees and decide on the remuneration that is to be paid to the Chairpersons of the Representative Council for the 2022 term.

What is BRIDGES?

The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote well-being of students and prevent exclusion. The project has several subcontractors, one of which is ISYY. The aim of the BRIDGES project is to reduce the experience of loneliness and to prevent exclusion through activities that increase students' community and well-being.

Movie nights in March!

The movie night in Kuopio will be organized in cooperation with the Hyvät Kuvat film club in Kino Kukko. The Finnish comedy Peruna (2021) will be shown during the night. A precise event date for Kuopio will be announced soon.

Joensuu's movie night will be held in the restaurant Kerubi on Thursday 3rd of March 18-21. The Lion King (2019) will be seen in English with Finnish subtitles. During the evening, it is also possible to enjoy Kerubi's refreshments and delicious burgers. Registration to event is open from 17th to 28th February.

The movie nights are open to all UEF students and participation is free. Participants will receive the project's own overall badge as a memory of the event!

Hobby Buddies we're looking for

The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. By filling the Hobby Buddy application, we look for a suitable buddy for you!

There are different kinds of hobbies - e.g. you can search for a buddy for a coffee or movie company. Right now there are students in Kuopio currently looking for hobby buddies to play board games, volleyball, salsa dancing, role-playing D&D and ice swimming.

We’ll get in touch when the right buddy is found. We read applications and combine them together once a week, usually on Fridays.

Sports Afternoon is coming up! Are you ready?

University of Eastern Finland’s and Savonia University of Applied Sciences’ students and staff members are enjoying their Sports Afternoon on Tuesday 1st of March at 12.15-16. Every event in the sports afternoon is open for all students and staff members of Savonia and UEF as well as the students of HUMAK and Uniart Kuopio campuses. You don’t need a SYKETTÄ sticker to participate in these events!

The spring season Sports Afternoon is the perfect time for your work or study group to enjoy the outdoors together! However, there are also indoor sports events held on our campus sports facilities as well as on our co-operative companies facilities.

We want to remind all Sports Afternoon participants to follow the Instructions for Safe Exercising that can be found from this link.

  • Enrollment for riding at Savisaari or Peikkometsä and for Padel is open
  • Bowling at Keilakukko and Bowling Centre Rauhalahti track reservations are best to make before 22.2. - After that, other people can make reservations.

University of Eastern Finland provides its staff and students with online trainings, which help to develop the most essential study and working-life skills.

“Keys to Well-being – 5 Steps towards Future Work Skills” online trainings are designed to improve self-management skills, which are increasingly important in the changing world of work and study. Transformation of work requires new skills and competences: time and self-management skills, resilience and adaptability, collaboration skills, new ways of thinking, taking care of well-being and finding meaning in our work.

The online trainings consist of short videos as well as in-depth trainings. The trainings can be accessed flexibly at any time that suits you. They are free of charge to UEF staff and students, and they are available until January 31, 2023. New course from the Language Center: Cross-cultural communication in English

Would you like to improve your English oral skills? Join our 1 course where you get to practise your pronunciation, discuss cultural topics, and learn about working with Finns, both in theory and in practice. You will have lessons as a group and together with 5th year medical students. You will participate in two role-play interviews (past medical history and motivational interview), learn about interview techniques and relevant language.

  • 14.3. at 13.15- 14.45 session 1
  • 18.3. session 2 (Independent-study session)
  • 21.3. at 13.15 -14.45 session 3 (together with medical students)
  • 24.3. at 12.15 -13.45 session 4

Free admission and free bus transportation for students to Tahko Ski Lift Pitch on Wednesday 6th of April!

Tahko Ski Lift Pitch, the most significant startup company event in the Kuopio area, will be held in Tahko on Wed-Thu 6.-7. of April! At the event, startup entrepreneurs will compete with their business ideas in ski lifts and try to convince investors of their business idea. UEF is one of the main partners of the event, so there will be free admission for students and a free bus transfer on Wednesday, April 6th!

There will also be a competition for students called Student Track where students can present their business ideas and compete with each other. The best idea will be rewarded with a EUR 500 gift card to Gigantti.

The departure of Kuopio's bus ride is on Wednesday 6th of April at 8 am from Microkatu 1 and the return ride from Tahko leaves at 5:30 pm and takes you to Microkatu 1. A bus ride from Joensuu will be arranged if at least about 10 people register. Departure from the Joensuu campus is at 7 am and bus leaves Tahko at 5:30 pm.

Meals are not included in the free student ticket, but you can eat on site e.g., at the Sokos Hotel Ski Buffet for € 9.90 by presenting the Tahko Ski Lift Pitch student pass. Event passes are distributed either on the bus or on site.

Student Barometer collects information on studies and student life

Student Barometer is a survey aimed at students in higher education. Its purpose is to collect information on students’ experiences and opinions of their studies, student life, and everyday life. Student Barometer is repeated data collection carried out by the Research Foundation for Studies and Education Otus sr.

Information produced by Student Barometer is used in work to develop student wellbeing, student activities, the quality of teaching, higher education internships, studies and reports on working life and living, and educational institutions. Participation in the study is voluntary. By responding to the survey, you are participating in discussions about topics that affect student life!

Sign-up for Academic League of Legends IV (LoL)(DL 27.2.)

Tr3 Gamers Ry is organizing the Academic League of Legends IV (ALL) once again for its fifth time as we go back to the swiss tournament system. Gather your team for atleast 5 people also consisting at least three academic playing members to sign-in and take part in the most amazing completely online played League of Legends tournament consisting teams variating all levels of a skill.  There is a trophy/money/exceptional prizes coming for our leagues superior!

Games since the first round of the league season will be played from saturdays/sundays unless captains choose to reschedule their matches with other teams to another date. From week to week you will have another enemy team based on your played games and how you managed to play them up to that point. Teams that will find all the way to the tournament final will be fighting for leagues championship online on weekend of November 7.5. This date may differ depending on amount of teams joining the league.

Team sign-in forms from the teams have already opened so fill in your own here until Sunday 27.2. until 11:59 p.m. If you can’t assemble full team from your own friends, you can fill in rest of your team from players at ALL’s discord server #all-lft channel if there are some or look for team that is looking for players if you are solely looking for some, link down at the bottom of this message.

Learn Finnish at Kompassi

Would you like to learn Finnish outside the univeristy? Kompassi in the city centre (Kauppakatu 40-42) offers non-stop Finnish language courses three days in a week. These courses are open and free for all and they are held at Kompassi. You do not need to register or sign-up for these courses. Kompassi also offers free Finnish speaking and reading courses.

Regional Dance Centre of Eastern Finland (ITAK) welcomes You to see the performances at ITAK stage located in the centre of Kuopio, right next to the Kuntolaakso swimming pool and police station.

Coming up on March - Meri Pajunpää & work group: As It Burns

Meri Pajunpää is a dance artist working in Finland and Belgium. She accompanied her international work group to bring their new piece As It Burns to ITAK stage in Kuopio. This contemporary dance performance dealing with movement, belonging to somewhere and blurring of one’s own root resonates with anyone who has ever travelled.

The performance includes spoken word in multiple languages but understanding of the text is not essential.

Performances at ITAK stage (Suokatu 42/2, wooden building next to swimming pool) on:

  • 3rd of March at 7pm
  • 4th of March at 7pm
  • 5th of March at 7pm
