ISYY: Second Educational Psychologist a significant improvement to the study environment

ISYY is glad about the decision of UEF to hire a second educational psychologist to the University. Increasing educational psychologist resources has been one of the long-term aims of the Student Union’s interest advocacy work.

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) is very pleased with the decision of the University of Eastern Finland to hire a second educational psychologist in 2018, because this is a significant improvement to the study environment of the University.

– Having an educational psychologist at both main campuses of the University has been one of the aims of ISYY’s interest advocacy since the establishment of the University of Eastern Finland. We are very glad that the University has taken seriously the students’ worry about sufficiency of the educational psychologist resources and the wishes of improving counselling and student well-being, states the Chairperson of ISYY, Tahvo Kekkonen.

The educational psychologist will be hired as a part of UEF’s three-year project, which focuses on the improvement of student counselling and student well-being. The second educational psychologist is going to operate mainly at the Joensuu campus.

– The Student Union is going to work to affect that the position of the second educational psychologist would be regularized as a part of the University’s counselling system, Kekkonen tells.

At the moment, the University of Eastern Finland has one educational psychologist per over 13,000 students. This has lead to long lines to the educational psychologist’s practice and reflected negatively to the availability of student counselling. Recommendation of the Finnish Psychological Association is one educational psychologist per 5,000 students.
