Sanni Lehtinen was elected SYL President 2019

Press release of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) 17 November 2018

The General Assembly of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL), representing all of Finland’s close to 130,000 university students, has elected SYL’s 2019 Board. The meeting also decided on next year’s plan of work as well as SYL’s new policy paper.

SYL’s President for 2019 is Sanni Lehtinen, 25, Tamy.

The General Assembly also elected six board members:

Heidi Rättyä, JYY
Helmi Andersson, ÅAS
Kim Kujala, VYY
Roope Tukia, Tamy
Suvi Vendelin, AYY
Titta Hiltunen, HYY

The newly elected President of the National Union of University Students in Finland thinks that the year 2019 will be extremely important to student advocacy work: “We must make sure that generation policy will be discussed during next year’s elections and government programme negotiations. The accessibility of education, the total reform of the social security and stopping climate change are key factors in promoting well-being in society as a whole.”

The General Assembly published two statements. In the first one, the General Assembly highlights that climate change is about equity between generations and that Finland and EU must tighten their climate targets. “Climate change might seem like a distant thing, but it is already having a concrete effect in the Arctic, for example. It will change the lives of today’s young people and future generations irrevocably,” emphasises Sanni Lehtinen, SYL’s President for 2019.

The second statement was about better generation policy. “Teachers do the most important job in the world: they raise critical citizens. Politicians need to change their arrogant attitude towards the carrying force of society,” says SYL’s President for 2019 Sanni Lehtinen.

The General Assembly of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) was held in Aalto University on Friday and Saturday 16–17 November.
