The student magazine Uljas to shut down

The Representative Council of ISYY has decided to shut down the student magazine Uljas. Behind the decision was the increase in the FSHS payment proportion and the preparation for the possible ending of the automatic membership in the future which mean that the student union must adjust its operations accordingly.

The Representative Council of ISYY decided to completely shut down the student magazine Uljas in its meeting 4.12.2018 (votes 23–14). Behind the decision are economic reasons. The Representative Council of ISYY decided in its meeting on 21.11.2018 not to cover the increase in the FSHS payment proportion by increasing the membership fee which means that the student union must cover the expenses of around 40,000 euros from its current budget. This means cutting from current operations.

– The proposal for shutting down of Uljas brought about vivid discussion among the Representative Council. The chief editor of Uljas, Jussi Turunen, was also heard at the meeting. The vote following the discussion was widely in favour of shutting down the newspaper completely.  The Representative Council decided to use the savings gained by the decision to the FSHS payment and to produce a student calendar among other things, states the Chairman of the Representative Council, Jonni Nykänen.
