Call for applicants: A student member to the University Collegiate Body of the University of Eastern Finland and a deputy student member to the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies

The University Collegiate Body of the University of Eastern Finland is subject to public law in compliance with the Universities Act, section 22. The University Collegiate Body consists of 24 members; 8 university professors, 8 university teaching, research and general staff members and 8 students.

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) is seeking one (1) student member to the University Collegiate Body of the University of Eastern Finland and one (1) deputy student member to the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies until the end of 2019. Nominating student members to university bodies is a statutory function of the Student Union.

The University Collegiate Body is subject to public law and its statutory functions are:

  1. To determine the size of the University Board and the length of its terms;
  2. To elect the non-academic members of the University Board;
  3. To confirm the university community’s groups’ selections as University Board members;
  4. To relieve University Board members of their duties, based on the recommendations of the University Board;
  5. To choose the university’s auditors;
  6. To approve the university’s financial statement and annual report, and to grant freedom of liability to University Board members and the rector;
  7. To take legal action for damages against a Board member, a rector or an auditor;
  8. To relieve a Board member of their duties in the event the Collegiate Body does not grant freedom of liability to a Board member.

 

Additionally, the University Collegiate Body holds regular meetings to discuss important and current matters to the university community.

 

The Faculty Council of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies is a multimember administrative body in compliance with the Universities Act, section 27. The Faculty’s professors, teaching, research and general staff members and students are represented on the Faculty Council.

The faculty council’s functions are defined in the University Regulations, section 9. The faculty council’s functions are:

 

  1. To process and issue statements on the faculty’s strategic plan and budget;
  2. To process and issue statements on the faculty’s internal structure, within the framework determined by the rector;
  3. To establish or abolish subjects within the educational mandate;
  4. To set syllabuses, degree requirements and admission criteria, unless otherwise mandated in these regulations;
  5. To review doctoral dissertations;
  6. To process proposals defining the extent of a professor’s duties;
  7. To process proposals defining the extent of the faculty’s teaching and research staff’s duties according to the four-level career path model;
  8. To process deans’ proposals to the rector on nominations of professors for two years or more;
  9. To grant the title of docent;
  10. To grant the title of honorary doctor.

 

Persons with a right to complete an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in the University of Eastern Finland may apply to become student members of the Collegiate Body and the Faculty Council. Persons with over 50% employment contract with the university cannot apply to university bodies in a student group.

A student member ought to be effective, interested in student issues and dedicated to their job.

Valid applications are to be delivered to the Student Union specialist of academic and social affairs Mikko Aaltonen at koso@isyy.fi by 12 am Friday 1 February 2019.

Based on the Student Union Executive Board’s proposal, the Student Union Representative Council will choose the student member to the University Collegiate Body. The Student Union Executive Board will choose the deputy student member to the Faculty Council.
