Are you excited about organisation activities, or passionate about improving student advocacy? Would you like to gain valuable experience for working life and be part of everyday life of The Student Union? Are you interested in significant personal growth as you take the role of an employer for one year? What about promoting students’ welfare on a national level? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, apply for the Student Union’s Executive Board for the year 2026. The Executive Board for the year 2026 is selected at the Student Union Representative Council’s meeting on 27.11.2025.
ISYY offers a possibility to attend a panel discussion for the applicants. Panel discussion is held on Wednesday 19 November 5pm-7pm online in Google Meet. Link to panel discussion will be sent via email to the applicants. Panel discussion will be recorded, and it will be available for Representatives until the Representative Council decides on the new Executive Board for 2026.
In case you are interested in being a part of the Board, please express your willingness of becoming a Board Member by sending a free-form motivation letter and contact info to the Student Union, so the Representative Council can evaluate the candidates. Representative groups negotiate with each other on the election of the Board, and regarding ISYY’s rules every applicant must have a negotiator. Your negotiator can be, e.g. a member of one of the representative groups, or another person who knows you well. Please include your negotiator’s contact information in the application.
In your application letter you can briefly tell about yourself and why you are applying for the Executive Board, and in which sector you would like to be a part of. You can also include your resume. Both application letters and possible CV will be published on the Student Union’s web pages for the decision makers and other students to view, after the application period has ended. Please note that you should not write anything in your application and CV that you do not want to be published (e.g. address or phone number).
The application period is 3.11.-17.11.2025. Send your application and possible CV as PDF-files and clearly titled, e.g. “First name Surname Application” and “First name Surname CV” via email to tiedotus(at)isyy.fi and toimisto.joensuu(a)isyy.fi no later than on 17.11.2025. Title your email subject as “ISYY Board 2026”.
By sending an application, you accept that it will be published on the Student Union’s website. Information about the applicants (in Finnish or in English) can be found on ISYY’s website under the section Make an Impact > Become an Executive Board Member. Applications will be removed from the website on 28.11.2025.
The Representative Council will elect the new Board in their meeting on 27.11.2025. You can also express your willingness to become a Board member in this meeting.
The Representative Council elects the Board’s Chairperson, Vice Chair and 4-8 members annually. The Board is the executive body of the Student Union and its period of operation is calendar year.
The Board is responsible for the daily activities of the Student Union together with the employees. In addition to the activities of the sectors, the duties of the Executive Board Members are e.g., student advocacy and interest advocacy, representing the Student Union, and being responsible for implementing the action plan.
Applying to the Board does not require previous experience in organisations, more important is your motivation and desire to learn new! You can familiarise yourself about our yearly operations by reading different rules and regulations guiding the activity of the Student Union, which are available in ISYY’s Documents:
Operation of the ISYY Board is mainly focused on weekdays from Monday to Friday during 8am-5pm (prox. 20-35 hours a week). In recent years, the Board has held approximately 40 board meetings per year (meetings weekly, excluding holidays), and members actively participate in various working groups and together with the staff of the Student Union.
Board Members can have occasional evening and weekend duties, especially during the Student Union’s bigger traditional events, e.g. May Day, Academic Year Kick-Offs and City Orienteering, Independence Day Torch Parades and Annual Celebration. Combining board positions at the same time with mandatory attendance courses or full-time work can be challenging, and applicants should be aware of that.
Each member of the Executive Board has a specific area of responsibility and a sector they work with. During 2025 these sectors were:
As a Board Member, you have a chance to influence the activities of the Student Union and determine how the Student Union can evolve. You also have a chance to influence the issues at the university and campus cities. During the year, the Board Members have meetings regularly, travel around Finland cooperating with other Student Unions as well as represent the Student Union in different events, meetings and committees.
Remuneration is paid for serving on the Board. During 2025 remunerations were paid monthly, being 500 €/month for a Board Member, 800 €/month for the Vice Chairperson and 1000 €/month for the Chairperson. Board Members are expected to actively engage in Board work.
All elected Board Members are encouraged to attend the orientation on 11.–12.12.2025 in Joensuu, so please mark that date on your calendar. The Student Union will cover the travel and accommodation expenses for Board Members from Kuopio. In the second week of January, there will be an orientation week.
