Autumn greetings from Secretary General to ISYY members

Dear students,

The new academic year has officially begun. For some of you the student life is already familiar, but for freshmans, these first weeks, such as the application period, are very exciting time. I hope that your summer has been filled with relaxing moments and sunshine. Whether you are a freshman or continuing student, I congratulate you at the beginning of this academic year. Such as many of you, I am also a new face in our Student Union. I started in my position at the beginning of this semester.

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland, shortly ISYY, is offering a lot of different services and free-time activities during your studies here in our university. Our main task is to advocate UEF students' interests and that is why we have staff members on our both campuses to help you in different situations. Don’t hesitate to take contact to us! We advocate your interests, so that you can focus on studying (and to student life).

ISYY gathers university students together and we create a lot of events and activities. Especially after the pandemic it is very important to further the community spirit among students. ISYY’s BRIDGES project provides a lot of free activities and services to further the students wellbeing and their community spirit. ISYY also has many clubs that gather students with the same interest together, many of them weekly. There are clubs from board games to movies and different sports and our international clubs, like ESN Joensuu and ESN Kuopio, offer possibilities to internationalize in UEF campuses. For students free-time we also offer sports equipment and board games to loan and you can also purchase a SYKETTÄ-membership from our offices.

Our 13 000 members (students) are the heart of ISYY and they operate e.g. in our clubs and our decision making. The Students are the Student Union. Student activity is a great addition to your curriculum, as you are improving your work life skills and creating important and meaningful connections for your future. By following ISYY websites and newsletters, you’ll be the first to hear about ISYY’s positions of trust.

I encourage you to keep your eyes and ears open, at online platforms such as in our campuses. We communicate about our services and activities in ISYY websites, in our weekly newsletters, on Instagram, Facebook, Yammer, and through the info screens at our campuses. ISYY offices are at your services in Joensuu Haltia-building (2nd floor) and in Kuopio in Studentia-building (C-door).

Lastly, I want to wish you luck and success in your studies and an active academic year. Welcome to our university community!

Antti Natunen
