The 16th Annual Celebration of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) was held 21 March 2026 in Joensuu. At the Celebration ISYY awarded distinguished Student Union actors according to its Symbol Regulations. This year ISYY awarded two Medals of Honour, one Golden Medal of Distinction, one Silver Medal of Distinction and two Medals of the Student Union. In addition to the awarded Medals the Student Union also awarded 17 Diplomas of Honour.
According to the ISYY Symbol Regulations (PDF) the Medal of Honour can be awarded to a person, who has significantly furthered Student Union’s activities or goals with their long or very meritorious work.
The first person to receive the Medal of Honour is Emilia Enroth, who has demonstrated strong leadership, courage, and the ability to take responsibility in a situation where the Student Union faced significant administrative challenges. As Chair of the Board, Enroth succeeded in a short time in developing operating practices, strengthening staff well-being, and creating clearer structures for the work of the coming years. Their warm, attentive, and empathetic leadership style has earned widespread appreciation. Enroth’s determined work and ability to guide the community through difficult times have left a lasting mark on the Student Union’s operations.
The second Medal of Honour has been awarded to Jukka Mönkkönen, who is known for their long-term work to strengthen the position of students. Mönkkönen promoted student participation in decision making and built close cooperation between the university and the Student Union in all their roles. Throughout their career, Mönkkönen consistently promoted student well-being, developed the university with students at the center, and maintained a warm relationship with the student community. Mönkkönen has left a lasting mark on the culture of the university and on students’ opportunities to influence decisions.
According to ISYY's Symbol Regulations the Golden Medal of Distinction can be awarded as an acknowledgement for a person's highly meritorious and productive actions towards the Student Union. The Silver Medal of Distinction can be awarded as an acknowledgement for a person's meritorious and productive actions towards the Student Union. The Medal of the Student Union can be awarded for a person, who has enhanced Student Union's actions, good spirit and culture with their actions. And lastly, the Diploma of Honour can be awarded to a person, who has acted in student or campus association, ISYY club or in other close organisation, and enhanced Student Unions visibility, the cooperation between the different study fields, or has worked for our students interest advocacy in some other way.
