Call for Applicants: Student deputy members into the University Collegiate, Faculty Councils and Language Center’s Development Group

In accordance with section 46 of the Universities Act, the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland is a student union, which has a statutory duty to nominate Student Representatives to the administrative bodies of the university. ISYY names Student Representatives also to other positions. The term of offices ends on the 31st of December 2025. After Student Representative's term, a representative can apply 1 – 3 ECTS according UEF’s education plan.  

The Student Union had an announcement for the following positions in autumn 2023. Because only part of the position was filled, The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland no re-calls for:

  • 1 (one) Student deputy member in the University collegiate
  • 1 (one) Student deputy member in the faculty council of the Faculty of Sciences, Forestry, and technique
  • 4 (four) Student deputy members in the faculty council of Health Sciences
  • 4 (four) Student deputy members in the faculty council of Philosophical Faculty

At the same time ISYY is also announcing the following positions to be applied: 

  • 2 (two) Student members in the development group of Language center

The University Collegiate Body

The University Collegiate Body is subject to public law in accordance with the Universities Act section 22. The Collegiate Body’s functions are:

  • To determine the size of the University Board and the length of its terms.
  • To elect the non-academic members of the University Board.
  • To confirm selected persons as University Board members.
  • To relieve University Board members of their duties, based on the recommendations of the University Board.
  • To choose the University’s auditors.
  • To approve the University’s financial statement and annual report, and to grant freedom of liability to University Board members and the rector.
  • To take legal action for damages against a Board member, a rector or an auditor.
  • To relieve a Board member of their duties if they no longer hold the confidence of the university community. 

Additionally, the University Collegiate Body meets at least twice a year to discuss important issues to the university community (the UEF University Regulations section 6). Meeting Fee is paid for participating in collegiate’s meetings.

The Faculty Councils

In accordance with section 27 of the Universities Act, Faculty Council is a multi-member administrative body of a unit operating under university. The faculty’s professors, teaching and research staff, other staff and students are represented in the Faculty Council.

Tasks of a Faculty Council have been defined in section 9 of the University Regulations of the University of Eastern Finland. Tasks of a Faculty Council are:

  • to discuss and issue a statement on the faculty’s strategy and budget.
  • to discuss and issue a statement on the internal structure of the faculty, in so far as decided by the Rector.
  • to decide, within the scope of the faculty’s educational responsibility, on the launch of a new major subject and shutting down of an existing one.
  • to decide the faculty’s curricula (incl. the principles of inclusion of studies completed at another higher education institution or institute in the degree), degree requirements and student admission criteria, unless otherwise stipulated University Regulations
  • to grade doctoral dissertations.
  • to discuss proposals on the scope of duties and the definition of tasks of professorships.
  • to discuss proposals on the scope of duties and the definition of tasks relating to the faculty’ permanent teaching and research positions that comply with the four-stage career model and Tenure Track positions.
  • to decide on the award of the title of docent.
  • to confer an honorary doctorate.

Meeting Fee is paid for participating Faculty Council’s meetings.

The Language Center's Development Team

The Language Center's  Development team collects feedback on the language center's teaching and its arrangements and makes initiatives and suggestions for the development of teaching. The steering and development group meets approx. 4 times a year. Applicants are expected to have a special interest in language and communication studies. 

Applying for the open positions 

Person having a right to complete bachelor’s or master’s degree, or licentiate or doctoral degree in the University of Eastern Finland is qualified to apply for a position of Faculty Council’s and collegiate’s student deputy member. A person being in over 10 % employment relationship with the University is not qualified to apply for the organ as a student. In case person is talking natively other language than Finnish, the meeting papers will be transliterated, and interpretation will be set in the meetings by UEF.

Student members are expected to take care of the matters eagerly, bring the students’ point of view visible in decision-making concerning the students and be properly familiarized with the matters being decided on.

Student deputy representative will be elected by the Executive Board of the Student Union i.e. The University collegiate which is named by representative council.
