Savo-Karjala Excursion’s ticket sale begins 4.4.

What happens when you combine a bus tour and Finnish Student Vappu Celebration?! Well, of course, the greatest and most traditional excursion event of Eastern Finland!!

Savo-Karjala Excursion is one of the most famous and popular Vappu (May Day) celebration traditions of the Student Union (ISYY). The first Savo-Karjala Excursion was organised in 1990. The event is held every year on 29th April on both campus cities and during the event day students circle around Savo-Karelian region and its bars and restaurants on buses on a predetermined route, which will remain a secret until the buses start their journey.

Ticket sale begins on 4.4.2024 and the more detailed info about the event in both cities and ticket sales can be found from ISYY website.

To be able to attend the event, Finnish language is not required. The most important thing is that you get to have a great day with your friends and other students, celebrate Finnish Vappu and that you can keep up with the bus schedule during the day. If there are people on the bus, that do not speak Finnish, we'll ask the bus leaders to give all the necessary information about the schedule in English also.

Joensuu's Exchange and International Students (JEIS) organizes a special bus in this year’s Excursion, and it's called the International Bus! The main language spoken on this bus is English. The International Bus is open to all international students and also to local students who are interested in getting to know people from different countries.

ESN overalls for sale at the ISYY office

What are these colourful party pants that everyone wears in student parties? Overalls ("haalarit") is a huge tradition in Finland among higher education students. They represent you and your fellow students as a collective, especially since every study field has its own overall color and/or design. If you're in Finland only for one semester and don't have the time to get your own student associations' overalls, you can get blue ESN overalls, also known as the international students' overalls! The ESN overalls are sold at ISYY's office for 35e. Get yours before they run out!

To learn more about the higher education overall tradition in Finland, you can watch this Youtube video.

Easter in Finland

Easter in Finland is not only celebrated as a Christian holiday, but also as the arrival of spring after a long, dark winter. Finns have some Easter traditions and traditional foods, some of which might resemble your own country's traditions. We have listed some of the foods and activities that you can try if you want to celebrate Easter in Finland.

  • Plant grass seeds ‘rairuoho’ in shallow dishes to symbolise the arrival of spring.
  • Get crafty and paint boiled eggs
  • Try ‘mämmi’. Although made of rye flour, mämmi is very sweet and is traditionally served with either milk and sugar or heavy cream. A modern alternative to accompany mämmi would be vanilla cream!
  • Taste ‘pasha’ which is a heavy dessert made of curd cheese, cream, eggs, sugar and butter.
  • Eat chocolate eggs. Mignon is one of the most well-known ones in Finland - Mignon is a real eggshell filled with almond nougat. The nougat filling is vegan, and the eggshells are collected throughout the year as the eggs are used for baking.
  • Decorate branches with small Easter decorations, feathers and paper and use them as home decor.
  • You can read more of Finnish Easter traditions from here.
