Publishing Break of Weekly Newsletters

Both of ISYY's weekly newsletters Wiikko-Ärsyke & Weekly Feed will be on a one week publishing break after this letter. Thus the next newsletters are published on the 29th of April 2025.

You can send materials for the newsletters during the publishing break as usual according to the instructions, while keeping in mind the publishing date of the next newsletters.

Students' Vappu (aka May Day) events has already begun and there are only two weeks until the Vappu Eve!

Want to be a traffic controller for ISYY's Vappu Parade?

The traditions of the Student Union  in Vappu (May Day) Eve include the Vappu Parade that goes from the UEF campus through the city centre to Ilosaari.

ISYY is looking for more traffic controllers to keep everything smooth and safe for the Parade. Want to help?

Traffic controllers are needed just for the duration of the Parade (2:45 pm-4 pm), so participating as a traffic controller doesn't disturb your plans to celebrate Vappu!

According to the requirements of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, a traffic controller needs to be an adult. In addition, they need to have normal senses, a driving license (at least AM121 or B-class) and must have completed their Road Safety 1 -course. The course is available for free in the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency's E-learning platform and takes roughly an hour to complete. The qualification is valid for 5 years!

All the gear needed for working as a traffic controller and all the relevant event-specific information will be given to you at latest on the day of the event before the parade. You can register to be a traffic controller at the event by emailing ISYY's community coordinator (yk(at)isyy.fi) right now!

ISYY Office is moving!

The Joensuu office of the Student Union is moving to a new (but familiar) office space located at Suvantokatu 6. The services will be available normally until the beginning of June at the current location.

More information about the move (and its effects on for example club activities), is coming at a later date!

ISYY's Vappu (May Day) Eve programme

Vappu is the biggest celebration of the year for Finnish students. On Vappu Eve, 30 April, you can attend ISYY's Vappu traditions on both campuses. ISYY gathers all university students to celebrate Vappu together wit our old traditions.

Vappu Eve traditions begins with Capping of the Alkukivet statue organised by Täky ry. After that ISYY's Vappu Parade will begin from Carelia all the way to the Ilosaari. During the Parade we will perform the Capping of the Kanavatyttö statue. At the Ilosaari we will hear the Vappu Speech of the Student Union, live music and for the second time we'll see the Teekkari dipping in Joensuu.

Exceptions to the ISYY offices opening hours

ISYY offices are closed (notice a small change from last week, the office is closed until 22.4. instead of 21.4.):

• Thu-Mon 17.-22.4. due to Easter
• Wed-Thu 30.4.-1.5. due to May Day

In equipment loans, if the return date falls on a day when the office is closed, the loan period is automatically extended to the next day when the office is open.

SYKETTÄ Easter holiday is held between 17.-23.4. at the same time as the UEF Easter holiday.

Exceptions in schedules as follows:

• 17.-23.4. almost all group exercise classes on break
• 17.-24.4. Tulliportinkatu school closed, turns cancelled
• 18.-21.4. Länsikatu school closed, turns cancelled
• 18.4. and 20.-21.4. Joensuu Areena and Mehtimäki hall are closed

Gyms:

• Portti54 is open normally
• Aurora gym is open only with an electronic key between 18.-21.4., otherwise open normally
• Tikkarinne gym is open normally

Students’ East-West Finnish baseball match 7.5.2025

All-star matches continue with the students’ East-West Finnish baseball match!

Welcome to the Finnish baseball match between university students to play or watch the game, enroll as a player now! Match will be played in mixed teams.

Badminton doubles tournament 26.4.2025

Welcome to SYKETTÄ badminton doubles tournament on 26.4.2025 at Länsikatu school. The tournament is open for all SYKETTÄ users!

The tournament will consist of doubles tournaments of women’s division, men’s division and mixed groups. Please enroll with your pair with the same enrollment. Participation requires a valid SYKETTÄ sticker. Everybody is warmly welcome to attend as audience members!

Sports try outs

SYKETTÄ physical activity instructor Anni instructs low intensity sports try outs which are especially intended for those who are starting to exercise and those returning to exercise.

You can enroll on sports try outs without a SYKETTÄ sticker. If you do not have a SYKETTÄ sticker, you must register as a user via the website in order to enroll.

Easter opening hours of the UEF library

Joensuu and Kuopio campus libraries are open on Thursday 17th April between 8 am and 1 pm (customer service from 10 am to 1 pm) and closed from Friday 18th April to Monday 21st April. 

The library’s 24/7 self-study facilities are open normally.

A university degree prepares students for scientific research, one key principle of which is openness. The University of Eastern Finland is committed to supporting the principles of open science and research, and strongly recommends Master’s theses and licentiate theses to be published with Open Access. Dissertations are always published, and a publishing agreement is made for dissertations that are published as a part of the UEF publication series.

Every year, UEF Library raffles off a grant worth EUR 100 among UEF students who have made their master’s thesis publicly available.

International Clothes Day

JEIS is organising International Clothes Day in Carelia lobby on 24th of April fron 12pm to 3pm! This event is divided to two parts: exhibition and trying international clothes on!

You can come to see some beautiful clothes and learn more about them in the exhibition side and then you can also try on some of the clothes!

Sport Me Up Business Idea Competition is Now Open – Apply and Win €3,500!

Do you have an idea that gets people moving and feeling better – or brings a sense of community and the joy of exercise to Mehtimäki? Sign up for the Sport Me Up Business Idea Competition by April 30, 2025, and you could win €3,500 to bring your idea to life!

The competition is organized by TestLab Mehtimäki in cooperation with Business Joensuu and is part of the project "Mehtimäki's Wellbeing and Physical Activity Testing Station – New Business, Services, and Entrepreneurship". The competition is open to students, individuals, sports clubs and entrepreneurs.

What Kind of Ideas Are We Looking For?
We are looking for business ideas with potential to develop into ventures within the field of physical activity and wellbeing. The idea should support business development in the Mehtimäki area. Your idea can be:

• A service that can be provided at Mehtimäki
• A service concept that enhances the areas event offerings
• A product that serves the users of the areas
• Any other kind of innovation

The Finnish national sport, baseball Superpesis summer of 2025 is finally here!

The season kicks off with a home game on Tuesday, May 6, when Joensuun Maila hosts Imatran Pallo-Veikot.

Students have a great opportunity to experience the atmosphere of baseball at Ilosaarirock Stadium for free at the season opener! In collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland, Karelia University of Applied Sciences, and Riveria, students from these institutions can attend the event for free with a valid student card. Staff from the partner institutions can get a ticket to the game with their staff ID or showing in other way that they work at UEF (e.g. UEF email)

Students can pick up their tickets in advance with their student card from Joensuun Maila's pop-up store in the first floor of the Metropoli shopping center starting April 28.

Tickets are also available before the game at the Ilosaarirock Stadium ticket office. Gates to the event open on Tuesday, May 6 at 17:00.

Come to chat with Sakari Mattila, an expert from Pohjois-Karjalan Muisti ry, on this important topic! You’ll have the chance to talk personally and confidentially, receiving individual advice with no appointment necessary.
Pohjois-Karjalan Muisti ry will be available for walk-in consultations for immigrants at Carelicum (Koskikatu 5) this spring:

Pick up a number at a machine at International House Joensuu when you arrive. You will be served in the order of arrival. We offer services in Finnish and English without a translator. If you need an interpreter to another language, we will arrange it for you. You don’t need to be a client of International House Joensuu to get this service.

This service, along with interpretation, is provided free of charge.
These walk-in hours are specifically for immigrants and are organized in collaboration with the "Maahanmuuttajien osallistaminen muistisairauksien hoitopolulle" project. The project aims to support immigrants in accessing dementia care services.
